Do you also belong to those people who collect stamps, watches, rare stones or porcelain figurines?
And if so, would you like to have something in your possession that fits perfectly into your collection, but which is unattainable?
Here you can see the gallery painting by Thomas van Abshoven.
It dates back to 1651 and shows an imaginary collection based on an image of how it was developed for the collection of the Duke of Ores, Leopold Wilhelm of Habsburg.
In the lower left corner we see the painter David Teniers, who was also a court painter and curator of the Duke's collection.
He sits in front of the staff with a canvas on which there is already a fine drawing.
He holds a palette and brush and mixes color with his palette knife.
This painting has the visual art in itself, especially the painting as a theme.
Not only do we see an artist at work, we also overlook all genres of painting at the same time.
History paintings, portraits, genre paintings, still life and the landscapes.
But also the sculpture and the craftsmanship are represented.
The starting point for this painting was a gallery painting by the Flemish painter David Teniers, who depicted himself on his painting.
Thomas van Abshoven, a student of Teniers, probably copied the picture of the master for practical purposes and also changed some little things,
such as the upside-down painting at the bottom right, on which he also integrated his signature.
