A Marseille side yet to lose this season headed north to a take on a Nantes side yet to win
the weekend's opening game. Ligonieri will have been disappointed not to have claimed their maiden
victory last time out having led their match with Monaco 2-0 and 3-1. Not that you'd know it from
the atmosphere inside the bourgeois. OM meanwhile held on to their 2-0 lead at home to Brest
as they came into the weekend level with Monaco at the top of the table.
Knowing a win could easily move them to the summit with Monaco facing a tough fixture against
Lens on Saturday. The pre-match build-up was dedicated to new loan signing Joaquin Correa
making his debut after arriving from Inter Milan and after a first chance for Virginia was saved
by Remy Descompte. The Argentine attacker didn't take long to make an impact, a frantic start to
the game. Correa helping to create the opening goal, his shot parried into the path of Ismael
Assar who made it 1-0 after just three minutes. Assar scored in back-to-back top tier European
League games for the first time since 2021 with Watford in the Premier League. Descompte perhaps
disappointed to parry the save into the path of the striker but an unerring finish.
Here's another debutant, Nantes' 17-year-old Bastien Mbappé who looked to have perhaps
made the bigger impact on the game when he was sent off inside the first 10 minutes
without Issa as the last man. 17 years 166 days, second youngest player to start a Ligue 1
European League game with Nantes in the 21st century but also the second quickest sending
off in a Nantes league game in the last 30 years. Marseille made little of the subsequent free kick
that would surprisingly be a sign of things to come. Dug deep despite being a man light and
we're back on level terms before the half was out when Mostafa Mohamed scored a fine fourth goal of
the season on the turn leaving Paulo Lopez with no chance. Four in four for the Egyptian as many
as in his last 23 in the 2022-23 campaign. That was enough to see Nantes heading down the tunnel
on level terms. Pierre Aristouilhe largely stuck to his guns at the interval only bringing the
athletic Kid Abamba on for Adson and Nantes gave as good as they got against the 11 men of Marseille.
To the visitors who unsurprisingly produced more shots so 26 by the final whistle.
This one from Jordan Veretout, well saved. Marcelino looking for more he would then come
about as close as they would get to a second. Fingertip from Descompte with Bettina lurking
behind. He would make eight saves in total most by a Nantes goalkeeper since Cyprien
2017 against Marseille. Bemian trying to poke the ball beyond Descompte but it went wide.
A disappointing performance from the former Arsenal man who had not started life in Marseille
as impressively as another former Gunners captain Alexis Sanchez did last season.
So perhaps something opposite to last week for the Canaries taking a point they perhaps
had no right to claim. Frustration for OM whose claim to the top spot lasted just 24 hours.
