QUESTION OF THE DAY: Before we go, tell us in the comments: "If you had the chance to explore the abandoned mansion of one of your favorite Hollywood stars, whose would it be?" We'd love to hear your thoughts!
Over 50 years after Cabaret made her a star, Liza Minnelli lives a quiet life in an apartment
in West Hollywood, California.
She keeps this residence very private, and at age 77, Liza is rarely seen in public these
days.
When she was just a child, Liza was already in the public eye, considering her parents
were director Vincent Minnelli and actress Judy Garland.
For some years growing up, Liza lived in a mansion on Crescent Drive in Beverly Hills,
which was owned by her father.
And while these days the home is eerily abandoned, it was once the picture of luxury.
In the 1950s, it featured nearly 6,000 square feet, 19 rooms, and highlights like a pool.
As an adult, Liza had homes in New York and Hollywood.
While she's downsized in her senior years, her former properties included a lavish penthouse
in the Big Apple, where she lived in the early 90s, as well as a stunning $8.6 million mid-century
modern home in LA.
While this home was abandoned for about a decade, this first property we'll look at
was once a paradise for when Liza Minnelli was growing up.
The old Hollywood relic came to public attention around 2014, when people started wondering
what was going on at the uninhabited residence, and some even were brave enough to explore
it.
The sprawling Beverly Hills mansion has certainly seen better days, but it was home to Hollywood
stars for years.
In the mid-1950s, famed film director Vincent Minnelli purchased the home.
He was the husband of Hollywood legend Judy Garland and father of Liza Minnelli.
The property was built in 1925, but Vincent bought the Beverly Hills estate at the height
of his career.
After his first film's success, Minnelli went on to direct a string of successful films
for MGM Studios, including Meet Me in St. Louis, a film where he fell in love with the
On March 12, 1946, within a year of their marriage, Garland gave birth to her and Minnelli's
first and only child, Liza.
Both parents adored their little daughter, and doted on her endlessly.
Sadly, the couple's happy ending wasn't meant to last, and by 1951, Judy and Vincent
had finalized their divorce.
However, when asked about her childhood, Liza Minnelli told Vogue there were highs and lows
for sure, but I can say I was very happy.
Five-year-old Liza spent half of each year with her father and half with her mother,
and by the mid-50s, Vincent decided to purchase a family home in which Liza would grow up.
He purchased the mansion on Crescent Drive with his then-wife, and the impressive abode
featured 19 rooms, including six bedrooms, six bathrooms, a spacious garage, and an in-ground
swimming pool.
While Liza's childhood home looked quite different in later years, it was once a lavish
estate more than suitable for a famous family.
And the home spanned a whopping 5,800 square feet.
The home was updated from the Spanish colonial revival style to the French Regency style.
As the family went on living here, the home became something of a museum for Minnelli's
movie career, and the director began to fill unused rooms with all of his leftover memorabilia.
He also had child-sized versions of costumes from his films made so the young wives and
her friends could play dress-up.
Actress Candice Bergen recalled this time as she said,
I remember always asking to go to Liza's to play dress-up.
Liza's adoring father even had a massive playhouse built for her, so she could have her little
palace on the estate.
They lived a lavish life, but this changed when Minnelli's career success declined.
Over the decades that followed and after Vincent would pass, there was a lot of drama over
this home.
However, after Liza's step-mom Lee eventually passed away, the new owners were given access
to the Crescent Drive mansion.
Sadly, for the next eight years, there was little to no apparent work done on the property,
and instead, the once glamorous home became a spot for squatters and urban explorers.
Anywhere between dozens to hundreds of people broke into the premises as there was no security.
They found their way through rusted gates, broken locks, and smashed windows around the
estate.
The house itself was littered with debris, broken furniture, trash, ripped wallpaper,
moldy walls and floors, and much more.
The Minnelli's formerly beautiful mansion was only a shadow of what it once had been.
As of 2018, renovations were finally underway with an entirely new structure placed on the
back of the property.
In 1990, Liza Minnelli was living in New York City, and it opened the doors of her penthouse
to Architectural Digest at the time.
Liza's place was a co-op building, and her apartment here was a showstopper.
Set on the 21st floor and designed by Timothy McDonald.
He worked to create a peaceful and versatile living space that was perfect to relax as
well as be reconfigured for easy entertaining.
The walls of Liza's former New York apartment were also decked out with plenty of Broadway
memorabilia and an amazing Andy Warhol tribute to her mother Judy Garland.
Liza's designer Tim reorganized the space into a simpler series of rooms.
Liza said at the time about her place, the bedroom is definitely sort of an homage to
the Vincent Minnelli style, but the rest of the apartment is really much more distilled.
Except possibly for the faux tiger silk covered chairs in the rehearsal room, which are like
a little quotation from the old glamorous Hollywood.
In the entrance hall, you would see Andy Warhol's silk screen of Liza and a montage of her and
her mother Garland commanding the walls.
In the living room, there was a neutral-toned modular seating surrounding a rattan and glass
low table, which made for a stunning conversation area.
Liza said back in the early 90s about this home, for someone who has spent a large part
of her life in hotels and rented houses, this is a breakthrough.
And this ended up sticking because of how long Liza ended up having stayed at this beloved
New York City apartment.
In the dining room, there were more Warhol silk screens of Judy Garland.
And over in the music room, bookcases displaying Liza's awards are hard to miss.
Here you would have found her Academy Award, Tony Awards, and much more.
Liza lived here for many, many years, but more recently, in 2015, she decided to sell
the place.
City records show the star struck a more than $8.3 million deal with New York socialites
Robert Beyer and Lauren Pat.
It was said that was when Liza relocated to LA for work and to be closer to her family
and friends.
But she will always consider New York to be her home.
In 2022, a mansion in Hollywood that Liza Minnelli also once called home came up on
the market for over $8.6 million, which was a discount from the $10 million that was asked
the year before.
The mid-century-style property is perched high up in the Hollywood Hills of LA.
And not only was it once Liza's home, other celebrities have lived here too over the years.
Even Christina Aguilera.
The layout of the 6,500-square-foot home unfolds before you, and showcases each, carefully
crafted space, as well as striking views of the city and ocean.
The property uses a variety of finishes, materials, and textures, including exposed beams and
accent walls.
The main living area in the chic home boasts an open layout, with sleek stone floors, wooden
ceilings, and a sunken hexagonal lounge with a steel-clad fireplace that extends to the
ceiling.
The modern eating kitchen offers floor-to-ceiling windows and is fitted with worn woods that
contrast with its industrial metal countertops and designer appliances.
The four-bedroom mansion was designed for the Emmy-award-winning TV and film director
Jack Haley Jr., who was married to Ms. Liza Minnelli in the 1970s.
The home's angled door even boasts a doorknob with Mr. Haley's initials.
Liza and Jack lived together in the house, but divorced in 1979.
Mr. Haley continued living there until his passing at 2001 at age 67, and soon after
Christina Aguilera moved in and stayed there until 2011.
There's also a lower-level movie theater, which used to be Ms. Aguilera's recording
studio, as well as a galley bar, a temperature-controlled wine room, and a tasting area.
The large master suite features a sprawling fireplace, as well as various areas to lounge
around and rest in.
It's further completed by an en-suite bathroom that is covered in marble and has a soaking
tub, glass shower, additional fireplace, and three-sided aquarium, plus dual-sink vanity,
and large walk-in closet with makeup desk.
Other features include a pool, a yoga gym room, a wraparound patio, sweeping panoramic
views, and there's even a massage room.
Outside, you'll find the sunbathing deck, swimming pool, built-in barbecue, and lagoon-like
pebble-finished oversized spa with a fireplace.
50 years after Cabaret made her a star, Liza Minnelli lives a quiet life in an apartment
in West Hollywood.
However, these days, Liza keeps her life very private, and that includes her home.
Unfortunately, not much is known about her current property, and at age 77, Liza doesn't
venture out in public all that much.
So after looking at some of Liza's one-time properties, that's gonna wrap up our house
tour.
