Introducing The Three Musketeers' first short film: Ji-Sam: Best Friends Showdown! Would you believe that they shot this fantasy skit, which blends truth with fiction, all while under the pressure of being on tour for Shen Yun?
Sam wrote and directed the episode himself, including all the action-packed, behind-the-scenes and hilarious outtake moments that show the crying, laughter, and even the wrestling that it took to get the job done-all part and parcel of "growing up" in show biz!!
We made a film.
Dude, you're not gonna believe what just happened, man.
And it's a body swap film between Jisung and I.
We switched bodies!
1, 2, 3, testing.
So this is our first day of shooting,
and right now, this is the first scene.
And we're in the rehearsal room, and...
Wait.
He's eating snacks right now.
We're in the middle of filming, Jisung.
Stop eating snacks.
Every time I make a kind of video, movie,
I always have a main point I wanna express.
And for this one, it was the point of perspective.
So understanding other people's perspectives.
And using the body swap
kind of like a motif, kind of like a thing.
For this film, really, it's like the perfect thing.
And since Jisung and I,
we're completely opposite personalities,
it's like perfect for us to switch.
I think we're actually gonna fall, sorry.
Why are you gonna fall?
It was such a great chance to fall.
You're gonna break it anyway.
Wait a second.
This is so fake.
Wait, don't look at me.
Don't look at me.
Bro, the tripod.
Stop smiling.
I don't think this is funny.
Bro, no sauce.
You have to get angry.
Yo, stop smiling.
Don't protect me, I'm sorry.
You have to be very angry.
Really angry.
Get the anger out, bro.
Get the anger out.
Wait, you're not an actor.
Are you saying that you're an actor?
With this kind of acting?
Gosh.
Help me move the light, we gotta go start.
Can you get someone else?
Because I need to make movements.
How are we gonna start without the light?
I mean, how are we gonna start
if I don't finish making the dance?
Alright, fine.
I'll do everything myself.
No, give me the light.
I'll get it.
I'll get the light.
My butt hurts right here now.
You're bleeding.
I'm bleeding from the falling.
I love filmmaking, and I love making movies.
Any opportunity I have, I try to do it.
So this time, we had a good opportunity
because we're making this movie
for a festival that we're having.
This is a bigger project,
and I was a little nervous coming in here.
Oh my god.
I can't even move.
It's so hot.
You can talk, I can't mic.
Hello?
I was gonna grab a shot of you
looking really disheveled,
but you were like...
Jesus, my man.
We're supposed to start at 9.
Oh, forget it.
We're supposed to start at 9.
It's 9.30.
Dude, I'm so sorry, man.
I slept so late last night.
He walked like a teddy bear.
We have all these shots to do today.
We have one hour left.
Ready?
My shower's starting to get hot.
Okay.
So the hard part about making this short film is...
Because it's not like a YouTube video,
it's not like natural and candid and whatever goes.
You have to kind of make each shot perfect and cinematic.
So you see us having multiple, multiple takes
for one single shot,
and then trying to get the lighting well
and the audio well.
So it's a lot harder.
And it's really hard
because we're actually touring right now
and we're actually having shows.
So we have to squeeze in the time to make this.
But then we did get lucky,
and I feel like this film was really meant to be
because in this city,
we actually had five days off.
And that's almost unheard of on tour
because that's a huge amount of time with nothing.
And about five days,
we took advantage of that to shoot the movie.
No, you told me to move the light.
No, no, no.
And then I told you that I don't need your...
Are you two arguing again?
Jisung was grabbing the light and then like...
Sam was grabbing the light.
No, and then you're...
You're Sam.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but...
I just...
Three, two, one.
All right, we have three days before we...
We don't...
I just told you that don't look at the camera.
Don't look at the camera.
He stopped hitting me though.
You couldn't look at the camera, right?
No, him is like...
Because we were arguing.
Oh, you look at each other first.
He's just...
Look at me, look at me.
I'm like...
Are you getting this?
This B-roll is too good right now.
He just...
He keeps hitting.
Why are you hitting?
I'm going to hit Sam Pooh right now.
I'm in Sam mode, okay?
Don't...
Don't make me angry.
This movie is about Jisung and I
having personality and some conflict issues.
But during the actual shooting,
we had actual real conflicts, okay?
I was like, Jisung, can you do this, please?
And he's like,
Ah, I'm so...
I want to cry.
Alright, go, go, go.
Sam is so weird.
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
where is the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
Sam, what are you doing?
I'm getting ready for the camera,
unlike Jisung.
I mean, oh, dang.
I'm sorry, I'm getting into the actual acting.
Yeah, I'm just doing some tongue twisters,
so I'm ready for the camera,
unlike somebody.
Jisung.
Well, this guy, they have beef.
Real beef.
I'm just kidding.
I'm just getting right into my role, you know?
This is why we're making this movie,
so they can learn that
we should understand each other's perspectives.
The biggest problem with Jisung is that he's lazy.
He is just too lazy.
He's so lazy.
So right now, we're recording this,
and I feel like I'm doing this for real, dude.
I'm actually venting against Jisung,
even though I love Jisung.
Yeah, right?
Oh, he's here.
So Jisung, he's here,
so you can give him the real feedback for real life.
Alright, stand here, stand here behind me.
Don't look, he's gonna look at you.
Okay.
Alright, what's the...
What do you think is the biggest problem?
What's he good at?
What's Jisung good at?
What is he good at?
He's good at nothing.
I know what he's good at.
He's good at eating snacks.
That's it.
That's all he can do with his snacks.
Jisung, snack break?
Don't record me, record them.
Record them.
What are you eating?
What's going on?
Sam fails.
So basically, Sam's hair has to be very, very high.
And you did have a high wig.
It has to be high and mighty.
Is it okay like this?
His hair is really flat.
But it already looks different though,
because usually they're like...
Jisung looks quite handsome like this, to be honest.
I think that's the wrong look.
Oh my goodness, it's hard.
It doesn't stay up.
Come on, stay up there.
I can't help it.
First, you do some research
about the culture and background.
Pooh!
Yeah.
Did you say Pooh?
That's my last name.
And then, you get everybody together
and walk through the formations.
I'm actually really offended
by how Jisung's portraying me right now.
Jisung, how come you become like a gangster
when you portray me?
Hey, I'm sorry.
I need some energy level.
Yeah, you're cool with that, bro, right?
All right, we're done for day 2.
High five.
Day 2.
Yes, okay.
All right, let's see how Jisung's doing.
Day 2 of the Korean Dance.
Jisung, how are you doing?
Party!
We're getting a little bit stuck right now,
because we made the script,
but the script actually ended up being that...
It wasn't really...
It didn't fit the character,
because I actually wrote the script,
and then I wrote everybody sounding like me, Sam Pooh.
So Jisung sounded like me,
Will sounded like me,
and I sounded like me.
So now we're trying to have them do it in their own voice.
I'm tired.
Are you tired?
Okay, guys, we need to close this off.
Okay.
Are you sure?
Cheesy, peasy, Japanesey.
Give me J.
I'm Jisung,
and I only know how to eat snacks and smile.
Yo, that's ridiculous, okay?
No, but seriously,
who's gonna make the dance if I'm you?
It's 11pm right now,
and we're very very tired.
It's up to these guys now.
This is a lot harder than I thought.
You have to have that most accurate kind of
portrayal of the character.
On stage, maybe you can be a little bit bigger,
and then it'll come out,
but for this, it has to be exact.
So it's really tiring to get that exact measurement of acting.
I think that's the main thing between stage acting
and video acting that I'm starting to realise now.
Today is day four of our shoot,
and we're gonna try to get as much as possible shot today,
because tomorrow we have a show,
and the day after we have a show,
and we have four shows.
We don't want to shoot on show days,
so we're gonna try to get everything today.
And I can feel people getting agitated and hot-headed.
I can also feel myself actually getting agitated
and like really nervous,
and like just...
So right now, we are setting up the green screen
for the last shot.
Maybe you guys recognise it.
The A group here is working on one shot,
and the B group is working on this shot.
And now the fire alarm went off.
Now we're gonna have to pass out guys.
So while we're outside doing the fire alarm,
let me talk about today's shoot.
So during the shoot...
Yeah.
It seems like he was unhappy about
I'm being not cooperative,
so he got very triggered.
And then...
The fire alarm went...
I'm sorry, Sam.
I'm sorry.
I'll try to be more cooperative next time.
Sorry.
And I'm sorry about...
Oh, and I dropped his jade.
And I did not apologize properly about that, so...
I'm sorry, Sam.
Please forgive me.
I realised a lot of...
Like before, I used to think like,
okay, if I want to be a good director,
I just have to have a lot of knowledge in my head, right?
I read a lot of books about filmmaking,
I watch a lot of YouTube videos about filmmaking,
and it's actually...
I realised this time, it's not that at all.
It is that, of course, some of that,
but actually, it's being able to work with people.
Like, I actually thought about the example with Liu Bang.
He's a famous emperor in Chinese history.
He himself didn't have that much ability,
but he was able to lead people.
So he was able to bring the best out of his men.
And I realised, as a...
So Sam Fu, what do you say?
And I want to talk about the most important person to me this time,
and that's the guy behind the camera right now.
His name is Rusong.
This is the first time I collab with anybody on a film,
and I gotta say, it was really helpful, okay?
Do you think we need to shoot another time?
One more time, just one more time.
Okay, okay.
Just one more time.
Before, I used to have everything else...
Like, when I did stuff myself, I'll be solo,
I'll have everything in my head,
and what ended up happening is like,
there's problems with it, and no one would tell me off,
or no one would tell me it's cheesy.
But now, like, I have Rusong here,
I'm like, oh, yo, what about this?
Me and Jisung hug it out, and we high-five.
He's like, that's so cheesy, take that out.
And I'm like, oh yeah, that's kind of cheesy.
Also, I finally had someone to like,
kind of like, jot down the shot list,
and jot down the times,
and so I wouldn't have everything in my head,
there would be someone else telling me
what I need to get next, and it was super helpful.
This shot is just moving people around, that's it.
Okay.
And if someone's like...
I'm gonna take this opportunity to thank my brother.
Okay.
Hey, so today is day 6 of our shoot,
and today we're shooting the outro
and the end credits scene, okay?
So the point of this scene is to not let the audience know
if we switch back or not.
It's up to you to guess.
Give it to us!
Yeah, we just finished recording, and it's good.
See you guys next time.
Hey, don't touch that!
Don't touch that light!
As you can tell, we're really tired,
but we finally finished the shot,
and over here, the guy behind the camera,
Matty, good job, okay?
He shot all the B-roll, okay, so...
Alright, back to me.
It was really hard, but guys, this...
It's not called B-roll, by the way.
Behind the scenes.
There we go.
Alright, so thank you for watching,
and seriously, like, comment, and subscribe,
and we'll see you guys...
...next time!
We're not Will, because we don't need him anyways.
You don't need anyone, huh?
It's 5am right now,
and we're at the airport on our way to Mexico.
This is definitely the hardest city in all of Mexico.
First of all, the stage is really big.
It's really wide.
It's about 65 feet wide.
Run for your life.
And number two, the altitude here is really really high,
so it's about 7,500 feet.
