Satellites or telescopes like Hubble and the brand-new James Webb Space Telescope
offer us unique insights into the vastness and beauty of the universe.
Occasionally, however, these devices also perceive things that put people on Earth in fear and terror.
The strange thing about these discoveries is that we can only see them from a distance
and cannot simply travel and check what it is, what is special to see in the photos.
Do you now want to see 10 of the most terrifying space photos of all time?
Then stay tuned and join us on this journey to the eerie sides of space.
Dangerous spacewalk
We humans are drawn to space. But why, really?
Out there it is damn cold, damn dark, and for humans the cosmos is absolutely deadly within a few seconds and minutes.
Nevertheless, there are rows of wise people who are willing to risk their lives for a flight to Mars, to the Moon or to the ISS.
The probability of being killed on a space mission is certainly far less due to the few flights
than the probability of being killed in a car accident.
But still, courage is part of it.
One who had the greatest courage of all astronauts was the US astronaut Bruce McCandless.
As part of a space shuttle mission, this man did in 1984 what no other man had done before him.
He landed without safety lines in space and flew free through the cosmos for a few minutes.
Here, too, thousands of adventurous people on Earth would probably scream,
yes, I want to too!
Just like crashing into rubber ropes from bridges or driving down the Niagara Falls with a dinghy.
But this walk was extremely dangerous.
A wrong move, a small mistake in the technology or a sudden failure of an important instrument of the space shuttle
and McCandless would have been lost.
For the first unbound spacewalk in human history, the astronaut only used a navigation system called the Manned Maneuvering Unit.
With this, he navigated back to the shuttle after his walk and happily flew home and went into the history of NASA.
Marshench
This formation looks like the remains of a temple or a sanctuary, similar to Stonehenge, which once was.
But this stone circle is not on Earth, it is on Mars.
This formation looks so artificial and created by humans or some other creatures
that we can only vaguely imagine that this formation should be of natural origin.
Scientists and amateur astronomers aptly call this formation Marshench.
A fierce dispute has broken out around this photo, because again scientists claim
that the strict geometric shape was not built by aliens,
while ufologists and amateur astronomers are sure to have found evidence for the existence of an earlier intelligent civilization on Mars.
What is particularly scary about this is that we do not even know on Earth who or how Stonehenge was built in England.
The monument, which is around 9000 years old, is a mystery,
because people of that time had neither the tools nor electricity, roads, wagons or carts to push tons of heavy stone blocks through the area.
Who knows, maybe it was Martian people who are responsible for both structures.
Carbon Spiderwebs
400 light years away from Earth is the next carbon star.
CW Leonis is at the end of its life and will probably disappear in a few decades or centuries.
At the moment, the star completely slides its outer layers into the vastness of space,
which looks like gigantic spiderwebs are coming off the star.
Accompanied by orange-red clouds of carbon dust and moss, this star slowly carbonates,
and many scientists believe that this end scenario of old carbon stars is responsible for life to emerge elsewhere.
Stars like CW Leonis could be the ovens that brought carbon into our solar system and thus enabled the emergence of life.
ISS at night
The International Space Station orbits the Earth at a speed of 8 km per second.
At this speed, the ISS orbits the Earth in about 90 minutes.
In 24 hours, the astronauts on board experience 16 sunrises and sunsets.
Now we humans are habituated animals, and in space it is dark all the time anyway.
As a result, the doctors who oversee the project set a very specific sleep and wake rhythm for the astronauts on board.
In the evening, it also goes into the haze on the ISS.
Then the lights are turned off and life on the ISS returns to rest.
Take a look at this photo.
However, anyone who has seen Alien can only think of the fleeing Ripley and the dark, lurking Alien everywhere.
Creepy.
Door into the underworld of Mars
Was there or is there now life on Mars or not?
Take a look at this photo and decide for yourself.
NASA Rover Curiosity discovered this gate in the Mars rock in 2022, and the image caused excitement on Earth.
Imagine for a moment how Martian people sneak in and out here.
As soon as a probe appears or a telescope is pointed at them, the Martian inhabitants only disappear through this door.
Because no one has seen such a Martian so far.
Or the door is a relic of an old, long-abandoned culture.
Although there are even theories from renowned scientists who say that Martian civilizations could have retreated into the underground,
when it got really uncomfortable on the planet, most scientists disagree.
Here, too, it should only be an optical deception,
because what looks like a door here is actually only a little bigger than an XXL cat flap.
Phantom Galaxy
The James Webb Space Telescope is the new superstar in the world of astronomy and space exploration.
The recordings show old cosmic acquaintances in brand new light and breathtaking new details.
One of the youngest motifs was the galaxy NGC 628, which is about 32 million light-years away from us.
This galaxy is called the phantom galaxy, which radiates brightly in a black background.
Phantom, because you can hardly see it with ordinary telescopes from Earth.
Other galaxies radiate brightly, but this one seems to be pierced, gaping,
and yet the galaxy radiates a special beauty and order.
Thanks to James Webb's medium-infrared instrument, the galaxy has now become as clearly and beautifully visible as never before.
Now it is much more reminiscent of a phoenix by its shape and radiation, which rises out of the darkness with a fiery whistle.
Mysterious light on Mars
At the end of 2012, the Curiosity rover of NASA took this photo on Mars.
Actually, the task of the rover is to search for signs of water in the red planet's rock.
Only coincidentally, the rover looked to the horizon when it saw this light.
Researchers on Earth have been puzzled about what this is.
Admittedly, this part looks like a flying saucer,
and even NASA researchers admit that the light patterns of this object seem unnatural.
NASA is able to examine light emissions on recordings like this one.
Researchers use special instruments that can detect such fine distinctions in the light waves
so that they can sometimes find out for themselves from which material an object is.
But this object does not succeed.
All attempts to explain the light have failed,
and so we have to ask ourselves whether we are really alone in this solar system.
Terrible signals
What we can't see in space, we might be able to hear.
In fact, gigantic radio telescopes often reveal more about what is going on in the universe than light can.
Around the clock, all the sounds that hit the Earth from across the cosmos are recorded
and evaluated by computers and scientists.
Sometimes, however, these signals are not what a natural phenomenon like a supernova
or a sparkling black hole emits.
A few signals are eerie because they sound briefly sobbing and then disappear forever.
Not too long ago, a fast radio flash from the M81 galaxy was received.
Never before have people received such a sobbing and shrieking signal from the universe.
The source could only be located roughly 12 million light-years away.
But what cosmic event was responsible for the strangely technically sounding signal
remains a mystery to this day.
Andromeda crash
It is no longer a secret that the Milky Way will collide with the neighboring galaxy Andromeda.
Although the idea that our galaxy will soon collide with the neighboring galaxy is pretty creepy,
we can breathe a sigh of relief.
This event will only take place in about 4 billion years
and the fusion will also take a few million years.
We don't know exactly what will happen when two galaxies collide.
Researchers are observing fusions in the vastness of the cosmos,
but we can't see in detail what's going on inside.
According to computer simulations, we can already have a rough idea of the event.
Slowly, both galaxies will collide and then become one.
Whether our solar system still exists and what exactly will happen in our corner of the galaxy is unclear.
Tiny little blue ball
It's not a thousand years ago when people thought the Earth was a huge disc
and planets and stars were possibly light sources in a certain room or a kind of vessel.
Then people found out that the Earth is a ball.
Next, astronomers found evidence that stars, the sun and other planets do not revolve around the earth,
but that the earth is a ball that rotates around the sun.
That must have been quite shocking for people
and Galileo Galilei was locked up in the church for years for the claim that the earth rotates around the sun.
Then no one could deny that Galileo was right.
But not only that.
Astronomers of the Middle Ages found out what the planets really are and that stars are other suns.
Even at the beginning of the 20th century, researchers thought that the Milky Way was everything that existed in the universe.
The surprise was great.
As the telescope got better and better, the shocking truth was revealed.
First another galaxy appeared, then another,
and finally people had to recognize that even the huge galaxy,
in which they live on a tiny little ball, is only one of billions of galaxies.
For us, the piece of earth on which we stand, the sky and the distance to the horizon, is huge.
This photo was taken by space probe Cassini when it was in the orbit of Saturn.
Already viewed from one of our nearest cosmic neighbors, the earth becomes a tiny shining dot.
Somehow this picture is disturbing, but also beautiful,
if we consider what beauty and diversity lives and thrives on this little dot in the cosmos.
Now it's your turn. How did you feel about these photos?
Do you find pictures like these disturbing or do you follow all new discoveries in space with a relaxed tension,
no matter if they can be explained or not?
