The Museum Hotel Antakya is the world’s first modern revival of an ancient heritage site. An extraordinary intersection of experiences where guests wake to 23 centuries of history.
Home to the world’s largest single floor mosaic dating back to the 4th century, The Museum Hotel Antakya is both a luxury 5-Star hotel and a museum. Set on the foundations of ancient Antioch in the heart of modern Antakya, it enjoys vistas onto the nearby St Pierre, the world’s first cave church.
Our entire story actually began with the idea of building a five-star hotel in 2009
An archaeological excavation is planned here because it is a 3rd-degree landslide
Of course under museum supervision
Data began to come out from below along with the drill
After the data is released under museum supervision at the threshold of universities
A excavation is planned at the threshold of the scholars
The excavation was also under the ministry's supervision
We have had 120 workers 35 archaeologists 5 restorers and an architect for one year
One of the most systematic excavations carried out in Antalya was conducted
Our temple has been in existence since the 3rd century BCE up to the present day
An archaeological park showcasing traces of 13 different civilizations across five distinct structural layers
It is also currently under construction as a type of wooden house
It will serve as both an underground museum and an archaeological park
We are proud of our principle here which is not to harm the archaeological site
We had to go with a traditional well foundation using the caisson system here
It was a very challenging process
So one side water is coming on the other side mud is coming and you have to go down step by step one meter at a time
In fact it is the largest excavation and national pride project carried out after the 1930s and the reason is this
Because it is one of the few excavations where the teachers archaeologists staff and sponsor are all Turkish
Arazi was a place that had 66 partners in 1990
Some of the first people I met were a housing cooperative
I bought a lot after selling my properties
I finally bought the shares of the other three partners in 2001
Various groups arrived and claimed these places from the time the construction activities began
It wasn't meant to be so we didn't want to give it
A hotel building idea also emerged in 2009
These works as you can see are the greatest treasure of the world's single piece the Roman bath
We came across many works such as different tile mosaics glass mosaics and ceramics
It is very important not just for archaeology but also for restoration conservation and urban studies
It is an important structure for Kent's archaeology for preservation awareness and in my opinion for world architecture as well
When talking to Necmi Bey I actually realized that this matter has taken place outside of the norms we have been accustomed to so far
I tried to hint that the next process would be even harder for her
Of course I didn't even expect that this would be such a difficult path
On one hand pushing the limits of engineering technology and architecture to their utmost points
We have always worked on solutions for problems that have never been experienced before
I can confidently say that in terms of the relationship it has with the findings
It is a structure that relates to the area left over from the clouds not one that sits on top of them
It was constructed without causing any damage and with all necessary precautions taken for the future
Another important area is the one where the mosaic we call G2 Mosaic is located
It is currently called Pegasus Mosaic
We know that it is right at the base of the mosaic which is the largest single-piece mosaic in that world
We unfortunately didn't have much room to expand but we know that it's a large and very important villa with a meeting room
I know that as an architect facing all kinds of problems I have felt really bad several times
When you see what emerges everything else goes out the window and I'm sure it will be an example for the whole world
It's fascinating as bold as it is sensitive I think
This is a project that required a lot of effort with separate times for excavation and construction
The reason we are putting in so much effort is because we truly believe in this project
Believing in their promises for the country believing in their promises for the world heritage
Because none of us will be here 300 years from now but these works will still be here
Some people will breathe in the works here feeling the places where those people lived and history will show it
That's why it's very valuable
