We took a 7 hour FERRY to NEWFOUNDLAND (with a private cabin)!

We made it to Newfoundland!
We just finished the ultimate Prince Edward Island road trip
where we visited lighthouses and beaches, ate local delicacies,
checked out unique sights, and enjoyed its charming, quaint, and picturesque scenery.
And since then, we've driven across Nova Scotia, which don't worry, we'll be visiting this fall.
But for the next part of our Atlantic Canada adventure, we're off to Newfoundland.
Newfoundland is what sparked our entire trip to the eastern U.S. and Atlantic Canada this year.
For years, we have been intrigued by its fjords,
coastal towns, and overall breathtaking scenery.
And we couldn't be more excited to spend the next seven weeks exploring
as much of the province as we can.
But first, we have to get there.
Good morning.
Thanks.
Thank you.
To get to Newfoundland, you have two main options.
You can fly into one of its airports, or you can take a ferry.
And for the ferry, there are two routes you can take.
A seven-hour route to the southwest part of the island,
or a 16-hour route to the southeast part of the island.
And we're taking the shorter seven-hour route,
which is going to be the longest ferry ride we've ever been on,
and also the most expensive for our oversized van.
And the type of accommodation we chose, which we'll share more about later,
it was 321 Canadian dollars for one way.
So you're required to get here two hours early,
and they have a very stern warning in the email that says,
if you get here after that, your reservation may be canceled.
So we have quite a bit of time to kill.
So we're going to let Kona burn off some energy.
All right, it's time to go to Newfoundland.
Yeah!
All right, we're on.
How cool is this?
So there are a few different seating options on board.
They have reserved seating.
They have a more general seating area.
Or for about 62 Canadian extra, you can get a cabin,
which is what we did because we wanted a little bit more space.
And we are so excited.
It's like a little hotel room on a boat.
This is awesome.
So this is our home for the next seven hours.
And it is pretty nice.
As you can see, we have two beds here,
which come with sheets and blankets, a pillow and a towel,
which we'll tell you why we have a towel in a little bit.
And then over in the middle between the beds,
we have a little desk and a stool.
We also have this box right here that has an outlet.
And then this contraption, which we keep doing all these things
and nothing's happening.
We each have a light by our bed.
So in case we were actually going to sleep on this,
and we wanted to read, we could turn it on and read.
Although Adam's, which I guess we never really decided
whose bed was whose.
But I'm choosing, this one's going to be Adam's.
And his says emergency.
It says M light.
And then nothing happens.
But I don't know.
Like M light sounds like maybe you shouldn't mess with it.
So I don't know.
We also have a TV, which is a pretty nice perk.
Not really sure what you can watch.
So let's try it out.
Let's try it out.
Let's, let's try it out.
It's not working.
The power light's on.
It's been red the whole time.
Yeah.
I feel like we got the broken room.
All right.
Well, there's a TV.
You can look at the black screen.
Finally got the TV to work.
I don't know if I was maybe too close.
So I came back here and hit power.
And I also messed with this button.
I don't really think this has anything to do with it.
But it's working now.
Oh, yeah.
Discovery channel.
And now for the best part, we have our own bathroom in our cabin.
All right.
Sweet.
So in the bathroom, we have a sink.
Works.
A toilet.
I'll test it out in a second.
And our own shower in our room.
That's so cool.
It's kind of like a cruise ship, I guess.
You can definitely feel some movement on this boat.
I think we're now out in the open water.
So we're just kind of like rocking and rolling.
And we don't have a window in our room, which is our only complaint.
And I feel like maybe being able to see out would help with not feeling so strange.
But yeah, our heads just feel a little weird in here.
So you may be wondering where Kona is during the ferry ride.
And there are three different options for pets aboard the ferry.
You can either get a pet friendly cabin if they have one available.
They also have a kennel space that your pet can be at during the ride.
Or they can just stay in your vehicle.
Since Kona is the most comfortable in the van because it's her home,
she's just chilling in the van right now.
The only downside is that you're not allowed to go down to the car area while the boat is moving.
So we can't visit her.
But it's only about seven hours.
And that's actually less time than we would leave her when we had traditional jobs.
So I'm sure she's doing just fine.
She has water and she's probably just taking a nap.
So this ship is pretty big.
Besides all the seating areas, they have a store, they have a coffee shop,
they have an ice cream shop, which is unfortunately closed right now.
And they have a couple different restaurants.
So we're gonna go peruse our options and try to find some lunch.
So I think there was only one restaurant that was open called The Met,
which had a variety of different items.
And we chose the Thai curry with chicken and a burger and fries.
And then we also stopped by the coffee shop to get a coffee.
This is the barbecue bacon burger.
Pretty big.
Not bad for fairy food.
The fries are pretty solid though.
Normally, we probably would have just brought food on.
But we wanted the full fairy experience.
We wanted to try the food, get the coffee, do everything.
And it's not bad.
It's not bad.
You're on a boat.
Remember that.
I will say though, the sauce has good flavor.
I just wish there was more of it.
And the chicken's also nice and tender.
And the veggies have a nice little crispness to them.
Coffee is also super solid.
While we were sitting here, we started to hear music playing, live music.
And so I went snooping around and I found this couple,
Lauren and Marion from Vancouver Island,
who are just playing music for all the passengers.
And they're passengers as well.
They're actually traveling around in a school bus.
And he is playing an instrument that I had never seen before.
And she's playing the accordion.
It was just so cool.
It brought joy to my day.
So thank you.
So on the 16-hour route, we think there's a movie theater and a game room.
But on this one, you're able to borrow some board games.
And they have your usual Monopoly, checkers, yada, yada.
But we got Tickles, Sounds, and Bites.
Such a fun name.
Sounds like a different game though, huh?
But from Leading Tickles to Hamilton Sound,
from Moe's Ambrose to Ming's Bite,
chart a fun-filled journey throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
We just got it mostly because of the name.
Sounds cool.
But then we learned it was a Newfoundland and Labrador game.
And we had to pick this one.
So I tend to be a little slow with picking up new games.
Normally, when we're playing with friends
and they're explaining how a game works, I'm just like, huh?
So we usually have to do a practice round
so I can kind of learn what I'm supposed to do.
But from my understanding, the goal of this game
is to see who can go around Newfoundland and Labrador first.
And there are these clue cards that we'll be getting.
And the answers are related to the province.
So we're probably not going to know any of the answers.
But we're going to learn.
So basically, how your turn goes is you roll the die.
And so I rolled a 2.
So then I would get asked the second clue here.
And if I get it correct, I get to move two spaces.
And then there's also a place name attached to it.
So they would ask me where this is.
If I get it correct, I get to move another space.
Oh, gosh.
We're not going to know where any of these are.
Yeah, we're not going to know any of these clues.
And we're not going to know any of these places.
That's OK.
That's all right.
We're going to leave this boat with so much knowledge.
Oh, yeah.
So I rolled a 1.
So now she's going to ask me clue number 1.
It says bartender server smaller than a city.
You know this one.
I know you know this.
I do.
It's so obvious.
Bartender or server?
It's not obvious at all.
You're never going to get it.
I was reading through some of them.
Some of them are like one's feline extremity.
So I mean, if you randomly guess cat arm, then that's correct.
And that's a place.
But this one bar back.
It's Traytown.
Traytown.
Oh, how did I not know that one?
Oh, my God.
I have a feeling this game is going to be over in like five minutes.
We could have picked phase 10, which we love.
But it's good to challenge yourself.
Challenge your brain.
OK, so chefs and the refuge.
Oh, so does that like it's like cook something, maybe?
Yeah.
And then where do boats hang out?
Cook Harbor.
There you go.
Cook's Harbor.
But we're only getting some of these because we're giving each other lots of extra extra
things.
Well, we gave up on playing the game the way it was intended to be played.
And instead, we just picked places that sounded really fun or some easier ones.
They were just quizzing each other, which was still a fun way to play it.
But in the last few minutes, it feels like the boat is moving a lot more than it was
before.
We're both starting to feel a little bit nauseous.
I think we're going to head outside and try to get some fresh air and see if that helps.
We are over halfway and we are out here in the water now.
I cannot see any land around us and neither of us have ever been on a cruise before.
And I think this is the first time that we've ever been on a boat with no land in sight.
It's kind of crazy.
It really feels like we're on a cruise right now, except there are no water slides or
musicals or things like that.
One thing we wanted to make sure we had time for while here on the ferry was to take a
shower.
It's been longer than we'd like to admit since our last one.
We're out of Planet Fitness territory, so our only option right now is to shower in
our van.
And we just haven't for whatever reason, probably mostly laziness.
So we're going to take full advantage of this.
I am so excited for this.
It feels like my hair was dipped in butter.
Bye.
Save some hot water for me.
Oh my gosh.
The water pressure is pretty good and it's nice and hot.
This was so worth waiting for.
This is awesome.
I feel like a million bucks.
That was amazing.
I even got to shave my legs.
I feel like a brand new woman.
Don't worry, Adam.
There was plenty of hot water.
It never got cold.
It was.
Thank you, Marine Atlantic, for this beautiful gift.
It's my turn.
That was magnificent.
Our plan was to get some work done for the rest of the cruise.
But even though there is supposedly Wi-Fi on board, we cannot get any device to connect
to it.
But thankfully, they have a bunch of free movies on the TV, so we're going to watch
one of those instead.
It was hard to pick, but the winner is Uncharted.
It's time to go.
I have actual tears in my eyes right now.
This is gorgeous.
It is so different than anywhere else we've ever been.
In Canada.
Oh, my gosh.
Just where you enter on the boat is already so beautiful.
We can see mountains off in the distance.
I already love it here.
How was your ferry ride?
Oh, hi.
We missed you.
Oh, we missed you.
All right.
We got to change the time now.
Fun fact, Newfoundland is on its own time zone.
And what makes the time zone pretty crazy is that it is 30 minutes different from all
of the nearby time zones.
So, for example, it is 7 p.m. here right now.
But back in the Canadian Maritimes, where we just were, it is 6.30 p.m.
And then back on the east coast of the U.S., it is 5.30 p.m.
I didn't even realize that time zones could be a different minute.
Tonight, we're just staying in the parking lot of an overlook that is close to the ferry.
And this is what it overlooks.
We are right on the water.
And I am honestly just on cloud 10, 11, 12 right now.
The scenery is incredible.
The temperature is incredible.
Check it out.
We already have our jackets on.
Life is incredible.
Oh, my gosh.
I can't even express just how happy we are to be here.
And we could go on and on just about like our first impression so far.
But we'll save that for the next video.
But we are just...
We're just so excited to explore.
I cannot wait to wake up tomorrow and just go explore this magical place.
