First up, you will be learning lots of key vocabulary, and I'll make sure you're pronouncing
it correctly.
And as usual, you'll get lots of context and additional information.
I don't know about you, but I'm really excited to start learning all about this interesting
topic.
So why not grab a pen and paper, sit back, relax, and let's learn some English together.
As I mentioned at the top of the video, this topic can be known as birth control or contraception.
The term birth control is used more in American English, and contraception is used more in
British or European English.
Our first contraceptive device is the condom.
Repeat after me, condom.
In British English, the pronunciation is quite clear.
However, in American English, they do say it a little bit differently.
They say condom, condom.
American speakers tend to emphasize the first syllable, while British speakers say both
syllables quite clearly, but put a little bit more stress on the second syllable, dom.
Condoms are sold in packets, and you can usually buy these in a pharmacy.
If you wanted to buy a packet of condoms, you would simply say, hi, I would like a packet
of condoms, please.
It's that easy, and please don't be embarrassed.
There's absolutely no need, because it's very important to look after your sexual health.
And don't forget that safe sex is your responsibility.
As a choice for contraception, condoms are great, because they're the only type of contraception
that can both prevent pregnancy and protect against sexually transmitted infections.
And don't be worried about using a condom.
There is no medical reason why someone would be unable to use a condom.
They come in lots of different materials.
As a contraceptive, condoms are 98% effective.
So if you're sexually active, it's important to use condoms.
But did you know there is also a different type of condom, the female condom?
A female condom is a soft, loose-fitting pouch that's inserted into the vagina before sex
to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
Let's move on to a different type of contraceptive, the oral contraceptive.
Now this has many names in different countries.
In British English, it is commonly known as the pill.
And in American English, it is known as birth control pill.
Or sometimes it's simply just called birth control.
The pill includes a combination of estrogen and progesterone.
When taken correctly, it alters the menstrual cycle to eliminate ovulation and prevent pregnancy.
Okay let's move on to a different contraceptive, the hormonal ring.
This can also be called the contraceptive vaginal ring.
The ring is a type of hormonal insert that is placed in the vagina for the purpose of
birth control.
Another type of contraceptive that's placed inside the body is the intrauterine device,
also known as an IUD.
This device is more commonly called the coil.
The coil is a small, T-shaped birth control device that is inserted into the uterus to
prevent pregnancy.
They mainly work by thickening the cervical mucus, preventing sperm from reaching the
fallopian tubes.

Let's get back to our lesson.
Our next contraceptive is the contraceptive injection.
These are monthly hormonal injections which prevent pregnancy.
They contain a combination of progestin and estrogen.
Our next contraceptive is the diaphragm.
This word has an unusual pronunciation.
We have to remember the PHF sound and that the G at the end is silent.
Diaphragm
The diaphragm is placed over the cervix with spermicide before sex and left in place for
at least 6 hours after sex.
You might be wondering what spermicide is.
It is a contraceptive substance that destroys sperm.
It is inserted vaginally prior to intercourse to prevent pregnancy.
Usually spermicides are combined with contraceptive barrier methods such as diaphragms and condoms.
Let's move on to our next contraceptive, which is the contraceptive implant.
The contraceptive implant is hormone based and highly effective.
The implant is a small flexible tube which is inserted under the skin, usually in the
upper arm, by a healthcare professional.
And now it's time for our final contraceptive, the contraceptive patch.
This is better known as simply the patch.
And it is simply a transdermal patch which is applied to the skin preventing pregnancy.
And that brings us to the end of our lesson.
But just a quick note to say that you should always put your sexual health first before
anyone else's.
And never feel ashamed about your body or anything that's going on with it.
If you're concerned or have questions about contraception, why not ask your local doctor.
