Welcome back guys, it's the Tightwad, and I'm going to show you how to take your iPhone or other types of cell phone cords
that are starting to fray down near the tip and
turn them into this, which will last forever. These are never going to mess up
based off of the material that we're using today, and it's much simpler than you might think.
The things you're going to need today are your frayed cord,
heat shrink, and a torch.
I'm going to use a torch today, but you can also use a heat gun.
They sell them fairly cheap at places like Harbor Freight or even Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart.
But something that gets hotter than a hairdryer is needed to cause this heat shrink to contract and to form a good seal around this.
I'll put an Amazon affiliate link in my details for the video showing where you can purchase this heat shrink.
I bought this on Amazon, and I went ahead and bought an assorted variety because as you know,
I do a lot of repairs around the home.
But really what you want is something big enough to fit over the head of
the iPhone cord. So I've got these larger gauge heat shrink tubes here,
and I'm going to go ahead and use red today because I know it'll show up a little bit better,
and I'm going to slide it over
the end of my iPhone cord. You could trim this down if you want to get multiple uses. You can see I really only need
about two-thirds of this to fully cover.
But since I have so much of it, I'm just going to go ahead and use the whole thing today,
and it will protect my cord a little bit farther up.
So I'm just going to slide it over right here.
I'm going to move the rest of my heat shrink out of the way so it doesn't get any heat on it.
And
we're going to get started with the torch.
It doesn't take much at all as far as heat goes from this torch because it's extremely hot.
So I'm just going to lightly hit it with the torch all the way down.
And you can see just with that little touch, it's already started shrinking at the top.
So I'm going to rotate it and do the back side.
And it shrunk down there.
And there you go. That's all there is to it. The heat shrink is much stronger than the cord itself.
And
you will never have to redo this heat shrink on the outside
of this iPhone cord.
Some people actually decide to go ahead and put this heat shrink tubing on when they first get their cord
so it never even frays at the beginning.
But iPhone cords are notorious for fraying and the heat shrink definitely helps protect.
