What are the top 5 most expensive cities to live in in the world?
Coming in at number 5, you have the great city of Hong Kong.
Hong Kong used to be part of the UK, now it's part of China.
Then number 4, we have Los Angeles.
Number 3, London.
Number 2, New York City.
And number 1 most expensive city to live in in the world is Geneva, Switzerland.
The average cost of living for a single person in Geneva is $1600 a month and $3300 a month
for a one bedroom apartment.
Now when I initially looked at this, I was like okay, well let's figure out who thinks
the top 5 most expensive cities to live in.
So I went to Good Housekeeping, they have a general idea, it's kind of one perspective.
And they said Singapore is the number 1 most expensive city, followed by New York City
at number 2, Tel Aviv, Israel at number 3, Hong Kong at number 4, and Los Angeles at
number 5.
Now other reports show Hong Kong the most expensive, NYC is number 2, Geneva, Switzerland
is number 3, London is number 4, Tokyo is number 5, and then going a little further
out Tel Aviv at number 6.
And so I was trying to figure out even just a balance criteria between who are the top
5 most expensive cities and how do they gauge it?
You know, how does that work?
Is it people who buy houses there, is it the rent, is it the annual, is it the monthly
cost of living?
And so I came across Numbeo.
Numbeo is a website that will give you the cost of living in basically all major currencies
in the world.
And it will show you exactly how much it costs to live in any one of those cities.
And so in Singapore, you have the cost of living.
So Singapore, the estimated cost for a single person is around $1,100 a month.
And then the average rent is around $1,800 a month.
So I thought that was pretty interesting.
Now the average cost of a meal, going out to eat at an inexpensive place is around $15.
So I kind of wanted to figure out what was my own scale on what are the top 5 most expensive
cities.
So in New York City, the average one bedroom apartment is $3,493.
That's a lot of money.
That's almost, well with interest rates are the way they are right now, it's a $450,000
home.
And then the single person estimated monthly cost of living in New York is around $1,500.
And I think the average cost of low price going out to eat is around $20 per person.
Now Tel Aviv came in with the monthly cost per person around $1,000.
The average one bedroom around $1,400.
And I kind of looked at that and I said, you know, I think it's every major city pretty
much in the United States, one bedroom apartment is going to come in around $1,400 unless you're
in Alabama or Louisiana.
If you're in places like Miami or Tampa or Dallas or Detroit or Chicago, $1,400 a month
for a one bedroom apartment is pretty much standard in the United States.
It's a lot of money, but it's not a jaw dropping number.
So now London has the average monthly rent for a one bedroom around $2,500 and the average
cost of living around $1,300.
Hong Kong, $1,100 for the cost of living for one person, one bedroom apartment, $2,200.
And then Geneva comes in at $1,600 monthly cost for a person.
And the average rent is $3,328.
LA is coming in at $1,300 a person and the average cost is around $2,200.
So I was really trying to figure out how do we gauge what are the top five most expensive
cities?
And the list goes like this.
I used it based on what's the monthly cost of living and what's the average price for
a one bedroom apartment.
It ties, but Geneva's a little bit ahead of New York city.
So Geneva goes down as the most expensive city in the world to live in based on their
cost of living per month and the monthly rent.
Number two is New York city.
Number three or number three is London.
Number four is Los Angeles.
Number five is Hong Kong.
Tel Aviv doesn't even make the list.
And Singapore, which was said to be number one by, uh, good housekeeping doesn't make
my list either because their cost of living for a student, for the apartment is significantly
less than it's $1,100 a month to live there.
So that being said, the most expensive city to live in, in the world, based on my calculations,
Geneva, Switzerland.
