As Marseille were hoping for the infamous and new manager bounce
at the newly appointed Gennaro Gattuso,
Monaco were looking to bounce back from their derby day defeat last time out
when the pair met at the Stade Louis-Dieu.
Marseille announced Gattuso Wednesday night.
President Pablo Longoria tapping up the former Milan, Napoli and Valencia coach
to replace Marcelino may have helped take the heat off
after a painful 4-0 loss to rivals PSG in the Classique.
Gattuso described his style as intense
and said he wants his team to be quick and to be able to break through the lines
and they very quickly broke through the lines to score after just 31 seconds.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's ball into the box
met for the first time by Illiman NDIA.
His connection somehow found its way past Philipp Koehn.
A summer arrival from Sheffield United
scored his first goal for the club
and over his fastest league goal since André-Pierre Gignac in 2014.
So the earliest Monaco conceded in a top flight
since detailed records began
but they struck back almost as quickly.
Close back on level terms by the 8th minute
when Wissam Ben Yedda laid off a throw for Magnus Aklyuch.
Control and fire home.
Lovely touch from the captain.
Restored to the starting line-up
and the youngster doing the rest.
The game continued to swing back and forth
and then regaining the advantage 10 minutes later
and in fine fashion as an NDIA cross was met by Samuel Gigo
netted with a first time side foot volley.
Goal scorer turns provider
after drawing a blank on his first few outings
for one of his former youth clubs.
NDIA with a goal and an assist in the space of 20 minutes.
Gigo meanwhile scores for the first time in 2023
as the away side wrestled back the lead.
Once again though they couldn't hang on to it for long
Monaco equalising for the second time
midway through the first half
as Flo Balligan made up for his double penalty miss against Nice.
Controlling a pass by Aklyuch
before producing an emphatic finish.
Today redemption is spelt FLO.
A hectic first half featuring four goals
but in some sense back to square one for the second half.
This time it would be Monaco who struck early.
A few minutes after the restart
Balligan helping the ball onto Aklyuch
and the young midfielder beating Lopez at his near post
to make it 3-2.
With three goals and one assist
the 21-year-old has now been involved in more goals
in Liga Uber Eats this season
than any other player born in the 21st century.
Marseille conceded ten goals in three games
since the resignation of Marcelino.
Gattuso certainly with some work to do
to shore up his defence.
And that would be the end of the scoring
as Monaco held on for a win that sees them indeed bounce back
in fact all the way to the top of the table.
Gattuso now makes it 11 consecutive
own managers who have failed to win their first away game.
Last to do so was Elie Bopp in 2012.
