Hi all, today we are going to discuss about Langmuir-Bolgett process
Langmuir-Bolgett process is used to produce very thin polymer films in molecular scale
We can call this process as LB process or Langmuir-Bolgett process
In this process, we are spreading volatile solvents on the surface of an active material
In this LB process, we don't have to deposit a single monolayer on a single substrate
We can create more than one layers in a single substrate
In this way, we can create multi-layer structure
This LB process is similar to micromachining manufacturing technique
We can use this LB process as an alternative to micromachining
LB films are good candidate material for exhibiting ferromagnetic, pyro and piezoelectric properties
LB films also produce optical properties like refractive index and anti-reflectivity
LB films are ideal material for micro-sensors and optoelectronic devices
Let's see some examples of LB film applications in micro-systems
The first one is Ferroelectric Polymer Thin Films
Polyvinylidene Fluoride or PVDF is used in this film
Applications of this type of film include sound transducers in air and water
Tactile Senses, Biomedical Applications such as Tissue Compatible Implants, Cardiopulmonary Senses, Implantable Transducers and Senses for Prosthetic and Rehabitation Senses
The second example is Coating Materials with Controllable Optical Properties
These are widely used in broadband optical fibres which can transmit laser light at different wavelengths
The second example is Coating Materials with Controllable Optical Properties
These are widely used in broadband optical fibres such as micro-sensors
The sensitivity of many electrical conducting polymeric materials to gases and environmental conditions make this material suitable for micro-sensors
The third example is Ferro Electric Polymer Thin Films Coating Materials with Controllable Optical Properties, Micro-sensors
Conductive polymers are also used in electrochemical biosensors such as micro-ambirometric glucose and galactose biosensors
