(Premier League 2023/2024): Highlights Arsenal - Man City

So the best two teams in the Premier League last season now meet for the first time this here at the Emirates Stadium. For most of the last campaign it was City playing catch-up as the young pretenders attempted to dethrone the champions, but in the end the Blues once again retained their crown. Both teams can make genuine statements today, particularly ahead of the two-week international break. Good start for City, plenty of possession, plenty of territory. Yes he do, Shynchenko tried to prevent it and as he cleared it the ball must have gone over the line and it goes out for the game's first corner and we know they're a good threat from corners they work on them on the training ground they have height now which is something they might not have had in previous years as Foden puts in a ball it's beyond the goalkeeper and cleared off the line it was Guardiola who hooked it didn't look as though it would cross the line and indeed it didn't but Ake might score no he's put it over the bar brilliant chance for Ake it was glanced onto him Arsenal didn't cover him and it was hit over the bar oh it's a massive chance I mean Ray has got totally lost on the corner it comes back out it's flicked on by Haaland nice touch by Ake but he couldn't get it down and that's a big chance if you look at Rea from the corner here you know Guardiola's brilliant to get some contact on him but Rea is totally lost here's the flick on from Haaland nice touch and he's got to keep that low he keeps it low it's 1-0 fantastic start to open City it's interesting it's like a game of chess at the minute oh my goodness mate well Rea got the ball he was trying to be as careful and as casual as Edison but nobody's as good as Edison in those positions Alvarez was suddenly on top of him it was out of nothing really and it ricocheted off Alvarez's foot it could have gone anywhere City very nearly in front because David Rea got himself in a right tangle oh but it's oh Diaz missed it and Ketty is on to it he's in the penalty area can he get his shot away well he does it's wide of everyone it's wide of the post it's a goal kick but it's the first chance Arsenal have had now yeah Diaz is very unlikely and he leads it but totally misses the interception and then Ketty has got a half a yard just a little bit off balance and it's nowhere really near the goal from Edison it's not a bad ball actually Haaland tries to bring in the control and he did and then he lays it off to Alvarez shooting position and Rice put him off and well it was a good chance Haaland got away chested it down brought it down and then laid it off to Alvarez and Alvarez ballooned it over the bar with Rice coming at him but it was good from City into Foden back to Kovacic and the ball comes forward now towards Vardial Vardial's great ball in and Haaland almost got to it it got a little touch off David Rea and it bounced off Sinchenko who knew nothing about it and it goes out for a City corner brilliant whipped in ball quality move though absolute quality into Haaland back to Foden lovely slide rule past the and Haaland's almost got a you know a free hand in there Aker into the City penalty area goes back to Edison Edison plays it out to Dienz Dienz on to Lewis Lewis plays it forward to Alvarez who couldn't control it and Arsenal have won it back and they've started this half well Arsenal Rice coming forward Alvarez has gone with him Rice keeps on going lays it off to Nketiah Nketiah in the penalty area cross comes in takes a deflection off Walker second corner for Arsenal a third corner I beg your pardon for Arsenal now first of the second half game with few chances Arsenal now have a corner Martinelli whips it in and Edison just got something on it Jesus clears plays it across the area and then Erdogan hits it high and handsome and it goes out for a goal kick but so just for a minute there City were in a bit of a tangle I think they're looking for a foul on the goalkeeper it's hard to see there Erdogan clips it into the area to Nketiah Nketiah looking for someone to join him but Diaz holds him up and he's given it away to Foden great defending by Diaz he's whatever he doesn't do in possession he does everything right out of possession Diaz just as he did there the ball is on towards Foden it breaks for Bernardo Silva now City might be able to counter here Lewis across the centre circle Martinelli's pace might get him and he does do what's that a foul referee says no he's through Lewis oh and now he's blown what's he given well Lewis managed to ride the challenge well Michael Oliver blew too early he thought Lewis was was fouled and Lewis then rode the tackle got through put the ball in the net but Michael Oliver had blown for a Martinelli foul well it is a City free kick but had he played on Lewis went through and scored not that he had the chance to overturn his decision just feels as though its first goal wins this game it really does there hasn't been a barrel of chances like you often associate with a City Arsenal fixture the ball is with Edison Edison towards Diaz on the edge of the area on it goes to Walker Walker into the gap for Haaland Haaland holds off and lays it off to Alvarez a little bit of space out wide and Guardiola enters it now then Guardiola around the outside on to Foden Foden to Alvarez Alvarez shot he's blocked and Arsenal can't get to the second ball Walker does do might think about shooting changes his mind City starting to get themselves back into a rhythm again on to Saliba and on to Pate midway inside the City half he goes on to Oerdegaard Oerdegaard tries to get away from Stones Doku got a foot on it and out it goes for an Arsenal throw six minutes to full time Jesus with the throw I think his foot was up there but the referee ways play on Oerdegaard into the penalty area turns and twists back heel to Jesus City win it back well Ake thots it away Jesus says penalty but I don't think it was I'm actually I'm not sure that anyone is particularly convinced let's have a look Jesus goes in oh he gets some of the ball getting another replay of it he definitely gets the ball first yeah Pater crosses the halfway line puts in a long ball up towards the run of Tomiasu and on to Havertz Ake was at his heels Martinelli there's a deflection in it's an own goal by Nathan Ake Martinelli hit the shot Ake couldn't get out of the way of it he went off his knees he wrong-footed Edison and Arsenal hit the front and they well have won the game there's a ball from Pater that opened it up diagonal run diagonal pass into Tomiasu I thought Ake did brilliantly to Quail Havertz but when the ball breaks out to Martinelli he's safe what's it Ake's very unlucky you know just ricochets off him and into the net that's the breakthrough Alistair we've been waiting a long time for this it's going to be interesting to see what the City reaction has got maybe five six minutes Edison now has to look up City have got to find a moment of genuine inspiration Stones in central midfield comes forward across the centre circle we're in added time City trailing an own goal by Nathan Ake the ball is with Bernardo Silva on it goes to Foden on the edge of the area Foden hits it across to Doku four minutes of added time we've just entered the ball is with Doku on the left edge of the penalty area back it goes to Guardiola Guardiola into the gap for Doku Doku won't get to it it's a goal kick and time very much on Arsenal's side that's it the whistle goes it's taken one moment of incredible good fortune to settle this fixture Mikel Arteta shakes the hand of Pep Guardiola the final score at the Emirates Arsenal 1 City 0
