In English, you look at the shape of the object and say,
Hey, it's the same thing, right?
And you use the same word.
Hello, everyone. I'm Roy Nishizawa, an English doctor.
On this channel, we provide you with an unusual learning method that makes difficult English easy to understand.
Tony, what does water mean?
Huh? Isn't it water?
Well, if you look at the dictionary, it says water.
It's just a Japanese word, right?
It also says hot water.
Come to think of it, that's right.
Then, there are quite a few people who memorize that water means water and hot water means hot water.
People who remember that way actually don't understand the basic rules of English.
Water doesn't mean water and hot water, does it?
That's right. Water basically means one thing.
We've talked about basic verbs in various videos so far, right?
Many people think that it's hard to remember those basic verbs because they have a lot of meanings.
But in reality, there's something called a core image.
The image is just like a tree.
It's just spreading out.
And the verb and the take were one big tree, right?
Yes, that's right.
So, water doesn't mean water and hot water.
Basically, it means one thing.
There are important rules in words.
The rule is to use the same word for the same thing.
Nouns represent things.
In other words, using the same noun means recognizing that it's the same thing.
Conversely, in Japanese, using different words such as water and hot water means recognizing it as a different thing.
How is it? Isn't water and hot water different things?
That's right. It's different.
That's how the world is perceived in Japanese.
In Japanese, if the usage is different, it's perceived as a different thing.
The word tends to change.
So, water and hot water have different uses.
For example, Tony, what do you use water for?
I drink water.
I wash my hands.
I wash my face.
You use it in various ways, right?
Yes.
So, what do you use hot water for?
I use hot water for bathing and cooking.
Oh, that's right.
Yes.
Like boiling something.
Yes.
So, I think I drink water.
But when it comes to hot water, I don't think I drink it.
I don't think so.
Yes, that's right.
When it comes to drinking hot water, there's a different word called sayu.
Oh, that's right.
So, if it's a different thing, it's perceived as water and hot water in Japanese.
But English is simpler.
Oh, is that so?
If it's the same thing regardless of the usage, you use the same word.
In other words, both water and hot water are the same in English.
I didn't feel that way, but I'm starting to understand.
Water and hot water are just different temperatures, right?
Yes.
For example, if you put water in a kettle and put it on a tree and the temperature rises, you call it hot water in Japanese.
When it boils, it's called boiling water, but I still use the kanji for hot water.
But the liquid in the kettle is the same from the beginning, right?
Yes.
So in this world, there's only water in it.
If it's cold, it's called cold water.
If the temperature rises, it's called hot water.
If it boils, it's called boiling water.
It's all water.
That's true.
It's the same thing just because the temperature is different.
The way you interpret Japanese and English is different.
That's what I mean.
Let's give another example.
There's a car handle, right?
Yes.
Do you know what it's called, Tony?
Isn't the handle a handle?
Unfortunately, this is a Japanese-language word, so be careful.
By the way, if it's a bicycle handle, it's called a handle bar.
Yes.
But when it comes to car handles, it's a different way of saying it.
It's called a steering wheel.
Steer means to drive.
And wheels are often used for rotating things.
That's true. The handle of the car rotates.
And this wheel is written in Katakana as wheel.
For example, the wheels of the car.
Do you know that this is also a wheel?
I've heard of it.
It's called a car wheel.
For example, a four-wheel drive car is called a 4WD.
Do you know what this stands for?
Does W mean wheel?
That's right.
4WD stands for four-wheel drive.
I see.
There are also wheelchairs.
In English, this is called a wheelchair.
And now there are a lot of them.
Handles, wheels, and wheelchairs.
But in English, they're all wheels.
There's also a thing that controls a ship.
In Japanese, it's called a ship's wheel.
In Japanese, it's called a handle.
In Japanese, it's called a ship's wheel.
In English, it's called a wheel.
We're looking at the shape.
For example, this is also a wheel.
What is this, Tommy?
Is this a roulette?
In English, it's called a roulette.
This thing itself is called a roulette wheel.
I see. It's a wheel after all.
That's what it looks like, right?
That's right.
Also, I want you to imagine the shape of a Ferris wheel.
From what we've talked about so far,
don't you think we can use the word wheel?
Yes, I do.
The name of the person who designed and built the Ferris wheel
is George Washington Gale Ferris Jr.
He took that person's name and called it the Ferris wheel.
That's interesting.
So, as a fundamental rule of language,
if it's the same thing, you use the same word.
I think that's what you felt.
In Japanese, the word changes depending on the usage.
You can think of it as something else,
but in English, you look at the shape of the object
and say, look, it's the same thing,
and you use the same word.
This is very important to understand English,
but it's a fundamental rule that no one teaches you.
So, this time, I used the word water
and the word wheel to explain it.
There are many other words like this.
In English, people who thought,
this word has this meaning and that meaning,
and it's hard to remember,
would think, no, they actually used the same thing.
I hope you can look at it from that perspective
and look it up.
In English, I was able to understand
that there is a fundamental rule
that you use the same word for the same thing.
In English, water and wheel
are different from Japanese.
It was very interesting.
Thank you for today.
