Actually, I don't use 90% of the English verb form.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Roy Nishizawa, an English doctor.
In this channel, I teach you how to learn English in a non-conventional way.
Mr. Roy, I'd like you to teach me about the verb form.
I see. It's the verb form.
I was rained on.
Please translate this into English.
I am...
I am...rain...
Boo!
No, I'm not.
The person who answers like this is a person who doesn't know the English verb form well.
In this video, I'd like to talk about the verb form as a theme.
The verb form is a noun.
Non-nouns are called verb forms.
First, let's check how to make a verb form.
The verb form is based on the verb form.
For example, John likes Cathy.
Can you say this in English, Tony?
John likes Cathy.
Yes.
Can you say,
Cathy is liked by John?
Cathy is liked by John.
Oh, that's good.
The original form is,
John likes Cathy.
So, it's SVO.
The verb form is a noun.
The original verb form is a noun.
The verb form is a noun.
So, it's Cathy is liked.
The original verb form is a noun.
That's how I learned it.
Unfortunately, there are some points that you don't learn at school.
That's important.
Points I don't learn at school?
In English, the verb form is rarely used.
Is that so?
In the example sentence,
John likes Cathy.
If you use the verb form,
Cathy is liked by John.
But,
there are no people who use the verb form.
What do you learn at school?
What I learn at school is the basic form.
In the sense of teaching how to make a verb form,
I think it is necessary and effective to rewrite.
But after that, it gets better.
At school, it's equal.
John likes Cathy.
It means,
Cathy is liked by John.
Like this,
I teach that it has the same meaning.
This is a big mistake.
As a premise,
there is no equal in language.
If there is a different form,
the meaning is definitely different.
What does it mean?
The verb form needs a reason to be used.
Reason?
In that sense,
Cathy is liked by John.
The English sentence does not meet that reason.
That's why I basically don't say this.
In English, the frequency of using the verb form is lower than in Japanese.
For example, in Japanese,
you say it like you were hit by Takeshi.
Yes, I do.
In English,
I was hit by Takeshi.
I don't usually say it like that.
I say it like Takeshi hit me.
Sometimes there is an ad.
There is a tool called Grammarly.
This is a tool that natives use.
It's a tool that checks the grammar of the sentence you wrote.
If you throw the verb form into this tool,
it will basically correct it.
That's why I basically use the verb form.
That's how much I don't use the verb form in English.
So when do you use the verb form in English?
There are several cases.
For example,
when you don't know who did it.
The window was broken.
If you think about the original English sentence,
it means that someone broke the window.
You can also say
Somebody broke the window.
But you can use the verb form here.
Because you don't know who did it,
you can use the verb form here.
The window was broken.
And the second case is
when you don't want to say who did it.
For example,
I was given an order to go there.
In this case,
you want to blur who gave the order.
If you say,
It's the chief's order.
It's going to give you extra information.
That's why I use the verb form to blur it.
For example,
It is said that English is an international language.
By avoiding who said it,
you can blur who said it.
You can hear it objectively.
The verb form also has such an effect.
One point here is
It doesn't say by something.
Oh, that's right.
The window was broken.
I was given an order.
It is said.
It doesn't say by something.
In fact, 90% of the English verb form
doesn't use by.
Is that so?
Because you don't know who did it.
You don't want to say it.
That's when you use the verb form.
Of course, there is no less than by.
So when do you use by?
That's another case.
For example,
If there is a wonderful photo in front of you.
This photo was taken by a famous artist.
When you understand the meaning of this English sentence,
you can't translate it directly.
If I were you, I would translate it like this.
This photo was taken by a famous artist.
It's not an acceptance.
That's right.
There is a point in how to convey this information.
Do you understand?
I don't know how to convey it.
This photo was taken by a famous artist.
It's like that.
It's emphasized by bringing it to the back.
Because if you put it after the subject,
A famous artist took this photo.
It's a spoiler.
I didn't pull it at all.
I took this photo.
In order to pull it,
This photo was taken by.
I'm using the verb form.
That's why I said earlier that I use by.
I told you that it's about 10% of the verb form.
I want to emphasize by or less.
New information is coming.
There are many cases like that.
I see.
So how do you use the verb form?
Did you get the image?
I just changed the English sentence to the verb form.
Even if you remember that it is equal,
I don't understand the verb form at all.
I think you understand that.
Finally, one more thing about the verb form.
There are some points that many people don't understand.
I'd like to talk about that.
There was an expression that came out at the beginning.
In Japanese, it's like it's going to rain.
You can express it in a passive way.
Actually, this is a rare verb form in the world.
Is it that rare?
Even in Mongolia, they use that kind of word.
In the verb form, it's like it's going to rain.
How do you say it in English?
It is raining.
That's right.
In a passive form, it's like it's going to rain.
It is raining.
It's going to rain.
It's like it's going to rain.
You can use it as a passive verb.
What does that mean?
There is no purpose verb.
It's a passive verb.
Tony, do you notice anything?
The passive verb is a passive verb.
But there is no purpose verb in the rain.
The reason why you can use it in the rain is because the Japanese language is special.
In addition, it is also the case that you will be killed by your parents.
In English, it's like it's going to rain.
It's a passive verb.
There is no purpose verb.
You can't use it as a passive verb in English.
It's the same as being killed by your parents.
For example, if you want to say that your father was killed,
My father died.
If you don't use a passive verb, you can use pass away.
You can only use it as a passive verb like my father passed away.
I see.
Even though there is no purpose verb, it becomes a passive verb.
It means that the Japanese language has changed a little.
That's right.
So this time, I talked about the passive verb.
What you learn at school is just a form.
It's only a foundation of how to make a passive verb.
It's important to know how you actually feel when you use a passive verb.
Words are used with meaning.
It's something you choose according to the feeling you want to say.
That's why I hope that those of you who watched this video will be able to use the English passive verb with good feelings.
I thought the passive verb was complicated, but I was relieved to hear that it was a grammar that I rarely use.
When I don't know who did it, or when I want to blur the subject, I use it.
It was very interesting to know that the passive verb is a special grammar.
Thank you for today.
Thank you for watching the video until the end.

I would be happy if you could write in the comments why you use the passive verb, your impression of Japanese, and so on.
I'm really happy to receive a lot of comments recently.
See you in the next video.

See ya!
