In many old cultures, it was believed that some people could only cause damage to others with their gaze.
And who hasn't heard that the eyes are the mirror of the soul?
The eyes could reflect goodness, love, hate and even fear,
and intimidate the viewer until he has to turn away from the gaze.
Sometimes we are ourselves who don't want our intimacy sphere to be hurt,
and quickly turn away with our gaze to avoid discomfort.
Even just looking at a portrait can convey good or bad feelings about this person.
We can even feel fear or another unpleasant feeling.
In 2015, the Japanese scientists Shogo Kajimura and Michio Nomura
conducted an interesting study at the University of Kyoto.
In this study, 26 volunteers took part who were supposed to perform a certain activity.
They were then shown a screen with a face that they could see clearly.
And that caused them to lose their ability to concentrate on the activity.
However, this did not affect them when their gaze was turned away.
The researchers believe that this effect occurs because the eye contact,
even with a stranger who appears in a film or video, is so intense
that it limits our cognitive abilities.
Other studies have shown that the eye contact can affect memory,
imagination and even mental control.
Too much eye contact can make us uncomfortable.
In fact, people who look into our eyes for too long can influence fear.
The belief in the power of the eye can be traced back to ancient civilizations
such as Mesopotamia, Egypt or Greece.
Back then, people believed in the evil eye and used an amulet called Nazar,
also known as the Turkish eye or Greek eye, to protect themselves from attacks.
Most of them show four circles in the colors black, white, light blue and dark blue,
which form an eye.
The Turkish eye was used as a protective symbol on ancient Greek ships.
A few years ago, we were able to learn from the news of thefts
that were practiced by hypnotists.
They were able to influence the employees of banks and supermarkets through eye contact
and then gave them all the money or the jewels they asked for.
As in the case of the hypnotist from Moldova, a small country south of Russia,
there were several robberies on Italian banks,
of which the police warned to be especially careful.
The hypnotized workers did not remember anything,
they only had the idea of the thief who bent down and said,
look into my eyes,
and from that moment on, the memory of the victim was completely erased.
The police recommended not to have eye contact with any customers
in order to prevent theft.
The explanation provided is that the brain isolates the surrounding reality
and in some cases perceives illusions
when it maintains eye contact with another person for 10 minutes.
So what happens when you look into a person's eyes intensely?
This is what the Italian psychologist Giovanni Caputo wanted to find out from the University of Urbino.
For this purpose, he conducted an experiment
in which he gathered a group of people.
In a slightly illuminated room, he had 20 participants sit in pairs on chairs opposite each other
and asked them to look into each other's eyes non-stop for 10 minutes
with a neutral facial expression.
Meanwhile, 20 other volunteers were asked to sit face to face against the wall
and look at them at the same time.
The reactions of the participants in the first group were very different from those of the second group.
Those who stared at the wall noticed nothing unusual,
but those who looked into the eyes of another person experienced altered states of consciousness.
Some even reported that they had the feeling of stepping out of their body.
90% perceived changes in the facial expressions of the other person
and of these 90%, 75% said they had seen monsters or strange things.
On the other hand, half of the participants recognized some of their own facial features in the face of the other person
and 15% admitted that they had recognized the face of a relative in the other participant.
For Giovanni Caputo, the faces that the participants saw were the product of their imagination.
But if this is the case, how could one explain that the group that stared at the wall did not visualize anything
while those who looked into the eyes of another person perceived bizarre faces?
Some believe that the eyes are the window to the soul of a person
and can open the gate to a completely unknown experience.
Caputo suspects that the brain is constantly looking for faces.
50% of the participants somehow experienced this dissociative effect of identity.
Others, however, believe that if you see a monstrous being in the eyes of the person sitting opposite,
this person could have a parasitic entity in their astral field.
If you look this person in the eyes, you could recognize the parasite that sucks their energy
and that can be quite frightening.
Maybe there is something much more powerful that escapes us
just by looking deeply into the eyes of another person,
because we penetrate into the deepest depths of their being.
We do not know whether the monsters seen by some were energetic parasites
or perhaps just fruits of their imagination,
but the fact is that the participants were frightened and intimidated.
It is obvious that this topic is not quite clear yet and that further research is necessary.
The research of these phenomena is still in its infancy
and there is a lot to discover about the mechanisms and the possible effects
that the eye contact can have on our perception, our consciousness and our psychological well-being.
If any of you have had such an experience, do not hesitate to share it in the comments.
