Edith Gassion, of her real name, was born in 1915 in Paris, in the 20th arrondissement and in the middle of the First World War.
The little girl spends a childhood in misery, in poverty.
Her mother was a street singer and in cabarets, but too poor to take care of her daughter.
She entrusted the education of little Edith to her maternal grandmother.
Her father, Louis, was a contortionist.
These artists who practice contortion, the fact of bending their bodies to the extreme.
Unfortunately, he was absent at the birth of the baby, since he had been called to fight during this first world war.
This maternal grandmother is alcoholic and does not take good care of the little one.
She lets her live in filth, without hygiene, poorly dressed and poorly fed.
The child is badly loved.
So we send Edith to her other grandmother, managing a closed house in Normandy.
Yes, a closed house is a house of prostitutes.
But on the other hand, she takes very good care of Edith, who goes for the first time to eat on her own
and is spoiled by the prostitutes of the place.
To spoil a person means to treat someone with tenderness, affection and give her everything she needs.
First incident in her life, according to them, the future singer would have almost lost her sight at the age of six
due to a health problem.
Her grandmother takes her daily to a cathedral to pray Saint Therese
and after eight days, the little one regains her sight.
A real miracle.
Besides, the singer will remain very believing all her life and will always have a cross on her.
Every evening of her life, Edith Piaf knelt down and prayed Saint Therese.
To kneel down means to get on your knees.
Her father picked her up from her grandmother's house when she was still a child.
He was doing shows in the streets of Paris in front of cafes.
He then had the idea of making his daughter sing to collect a little more money by doing the manche.
By asking the passerby for money.
That's how it all started for Piaf, in the street.
This is where she was able to express all her talent, inherited from her mother, an exceptional voice.
At 15, Edith emancipates herself, which means that she leaves her family to live alone
and continues to sing in the streets of Paris while doing the quest.
In the company of a friend.
It is at this same age that she meets her first love, Louis Dupont.
The singer falls pregnant with him and in 1933, at 17, she gives birth to a little girl.
She tries to find a stable job, but in the end she goes back to singing in the street or in bars to prostitute.
Unfortunately, Edith and Louis separate, the latter not bearing that she sings with her baby in the streets.
And another drama arises a few months later.
The little Marcelle, the singer's daughter, dies of tuberculosis, barely 28 months old.
After these misadventures, the artist will have a little more luck in his life.
Indeed, a certain Louis Lepley, director of a cabaret on the Champs-Élysées,
spots her in the street on a fall day, 1935.
As soon as he heard her sing, he said that with such a voice, she was not in the street.
It's still the third important Louis of his life.
But hey, a lot of people called him Louis at the time.
It was also the name of my great-grandfather.
And it's a name that's back in style, by the way.
Edith reminds him of a moineau, a very small bird.
So he wants to nickname her the Moineau Momme, but the name is already taken.
So he decides to call her the Piaf Momme.
So a or a momme is slang to say a child.
We can also say a kid, a kid or a funny.
And a Piaf is slang to say a bird.
We still use this word nowadays, by the way.
This nickname suits him well, since the singer was very small.
She was 1.47 meters tall, but also very frail, which means thin and quite fragile.
In any case, despite his small size, Piaf will make a triumph by singing every night in the cabaret of Louis Lepley.
That's it, his career has started.
Unfortunately, another tragedy happens in his life.
Louis, his mentor and adoptive father, is murdered.
Edith Piaf is very sad, but she will bounce back.
And she meets composers like Raymond Asseault, who will also become his lover.
Or the pianist and composer Marguerite Mossot, who will all write her lots of beautiful music.
That Edith will sing with her great talent.
At the end of the 1930s, these songs were broadcast everywhere on the radio.
And she becomes a star of the French song adored by the public.
She will even go up on the boards, i.e. do theater, also with great success.
Since the famous Jean Cocteau wrote a piece especially for our talented Edith Piaf.
Thanks to her glory, the star earns a lot of money.
And she leads a great train of life, therefore a life of a star.
Despite everything, she remains humble, generous with her entourage.
And on stage, she remains simple, very small with her black dress.
Symbolizing the bet of all social classes.
In 1944, her father dies.
And the following year, it is the turn of her mother to lose her life.
Because of an overdose in the middle of the garbage of Pigalle.
With great generosity, during the Second World War.
She will even risk her life by helping some French prisoners.
To recover a passport to be freed from the Germans.
France is happy and relieved after this Second World War.
So the time is right to launch her greatest success.
The song called La Vie en Rose.
Another classic of her repertoire.
And the song that represents Paris the most.
Edith Piaf also met the young Yves Montand.
From whom she will launch her career.
And who will become a famous singer and French actor.
Likewise, she will launch the career of another singer.
Charles Aznavour.
So I dedicated a full episode.
And cherry on the cake.
The artist will even fulfill her American dream.
Since she will go on a tour in the United States in 1947.
Where she will sing La Vie en Rose in English.
She then meets her great love.
The French boxer and world champion.
Marcel Serdan.
Edith and Marcel love each other madly.
And they buy their house together to settle there.
This song inspires him L'hymne à l'amour.
The most beautiful love song in the world.
But with her, the drama is never very far.
Because two years later.
Marcel Serdan dies of a tragic plane crash.
The boxer wanted to take a boat to go home.
But Piaf asked him to take the plane.
In order to see him again faster.
Sad stroke of luck.
This time it is too much.
And the artist plunges into depression and alcoholism.
Like his mother.
And after a car accident.
She becomes addicted to morphine.
This powerful drug.
That the doctors had administered to her to heal.
Because of her condition.
She even has to refuse roles in the cinema.
The singer manages to get treated.
Thanks to a detoxification cure.
But she still suffers from polyarthritis.
A degenerative inflammatory disease.
Edith has romantic relationships.
Marriages and divorces.
But despite everything.
She triumphs internationally.
Becomes a musical star.
And happens regularly in New York.
In 1958.
She has a relationship with George Moustaki.
Another famous singer.
But unfortunately.
Together.
They are victims of a car accident.
The singer's health worsens.
And she even collapses on stage.
Collapse.
It means falling brutally.
She gets up.
But she is very weak.
She barely manages to stand up.
Thanks to the powerful drugs.
But despite that.
She continues to sing on stage.
In 1961.
She gives a few concerts.
Among the most memorable and moving of her career.
At the Olympia.
The famous mythical Parisian concert hall.
We went there in June.
With my wife.
She sings there.
No, I do not regret anything.
Another success.
Became a classic of the French song.
Several celebrities will see her sing at the Olympia.
And even Americans.
Like Louis Armstrong.
Edith Piaf wanted to die on stage.
She lived only to sing.
She said.
If I had to stop singing.
I would commit suicide.
So.
She continues.
For better or for worse.
To give concerts.
Despite her health condition.
But the performer.
Dies on October 10, 1963.
At only 47 years old.
While she was on vacation in Provence.
Tired by drugs.
Alcohol.
The disease.
And all the sufferings that life has brought her.
She said.
Every fucking thing we do in this life.
We have to pay for it.
Which means that.
For every happiness.
We have to suffer a drama.
To pay the price.
In return.
Millions of people.
Came to pick up at her house.
And followed her funeral.
Nowadays.
Even young people love her music.
And the strong emotions she transmits.
So it's been 60 years now.
That Edith Piaf died.
But her songs will remain timeless.
We thank her.
For all the love she transmitted to us.
Thank you all.
