Tintin's Adventures is one of the most famous
comic books in Europe,
but also in the world.
That's why I'd like to talk about it today.
We'll see how and by whom it was created
and the main characters.
It will be a fairly short episode
for beginners.
Tintin's Adventures is the exact title
of this famous comic book series,
but it's not French.
It's Belgian.
And indeed, in Belgium,
comic books are an art in its own right
and the country produces a lot of them.
But since Belgium is partly French
and Tintin's Adventures are in French,
I absolutely had to tell you about it.
When I was a kid,
I didn't know she was Belgian
and I thought she was French.
The creator of Tintin was called
Georges Remy, a Belgian cartoonist
born in 1907,
so at the beginning of the 20th century.
But everyone knew him
under the name of RG.
RG was his artist's name.
His name was Georges Remy,
so his initials were
GR or RG
in the other direction.
When he created Tintin,
RG was working for Le Petit Vingtième,
a Belgian newspaper
about youth.
In this newspaper, he publishes a comic
that doesn't work very well.
In another newspaper, for which RG works,
he creates another comic
about the life of a young boy
and his white dog.
Le Petit Vingtième decides to integrate
the adventures of this young man
into their newspaper
and it's the creation of Tintin et Milou
on January 10, 1929.
The first episode, the first album,
was called Tintin in the Soviet countries
and in this first part,
RG tells the story of Tintin,
a young reporter,
a journalist who is sent to Moscow
at the time of the USSR
led by Stalin.
So who is Tintin?
He is a reporter
who goes on missions all over the world
and makes us discover many countries.
RG never gave the age of Tintin
but he says he is young.
Tintin fights against evil.
He crosses on his road drug dealers,
slave dealers, etc.
who want to prevent him
from revealing the truth.
To face all these bad guys,
Tintin is very brave,
he defends the poorest
and always takes the defense of children.
The young boy does not hesitate to put his life at risk
to save those of others.
He is very curious by nature
but remains calm and composed
and takes the time to find the best solution
to all the misadventures
he encounters.
Tintin is a blond hero
with a hat on his head.
A hat is a small piece of hair
at the front of the head that holds straight.
In general, he is always dressed the same way.
Brown pants,
a blue sweater with a white shirt underneath
whose collar exceeds the sweater.
In all Tintin's adventures,
there is a friend who follows him everywhere.
It's Milou, his dog.
This is the first character
that I would like to introduce to you.
Milou is a very small white dog.
He is very lively and very awake.
Contrary to Tintin,
he often succumbs to temptation
which is worth a few adventures.
But he comes back very quickly
in the right way
to help his master Tintin.
Milou is also grumpy,
grumpy and very talkative.
But despite everything,
he is a very cute character
and a little dog that we would all like to have.
Another main character
of the comic is Captain Haddock.
Another very good friend of Tintin.
As his name suggests,
he is a captain of a ship, a sailor,
of which he represents the perfect stereotype.
He drinks a little too much whiskey,
so he has some alcoholism problems.
Haddock has a lot of character,
gets angry easily
and often pouts.
Pouting
means expressing
his great discontent
by speaking loudly or without restraint.
That's why the captain
is also famous for his swearing.
Well, since it's a comic for children,
he doesn't say big words like
but expressions like
for example Mil Sabor
or Tonnerre de Brest.
But he says it all the time.
Despite this, he is a hero with a big heart,
ready to sacrifice himself
and who will also help Tintin in all his adventures.
Another important character
of the comic,
there are two people,
but who form almost one,
Dupont and Dupont.
As you know, the consonants at the end of words
in French are silent
and the family name Dupont
can be written with a D
or a T at the end.
It's the same pronunciation.
In Tintin's adventures, there are two policemen
whose family name is Dupont,
but one writes Dupont with a D at the end
and the other with a T at the end.
They are sows,
that means they look alike perfectly.
As the expression says,
but without being twins or brothers.
They are dressed in the same way,
all in black with a melon hat.
They wear a mustache
and it is the only trait that differentiates them.
Because Dupont's mustache with a D
is all straight
and that of Dupont with a T
is curved outward.
The characteristics of the Duponts,
they are above all gaffers,
they make gaffes.
A gaffe is a clumsiness,
it is an action or a clumsy word
without doing it on purpose.
So if we make a gaffe, we can say
Sorry, I made a gaffe.
Or I gaffed.
But to warn someone of a danger,
to say be careful,
in slang we say be careful.
So it's not to be confused.
For example, be careful, the plate is hot.
Or be careful, the plate is hot.
So the two policemen are very clumsy
and that's what makes them charming.
That's why we love them.
And they try to help Tintin
with riddles or police investigations.
And I present to you
a last important character,
Professor Tournesol.
In French, a tournesol is a flower
that turns to the sun, hence its name
and you certainly know it
in your mother tongue.
Tournesol is an engineer and inventor.
So he helps Tintin to achieve
his goals by creating
unusual and unusual objects.
The big problem is that
he is almost deaf.
So either people
have to scream for them to understand,
or they don't understand
and it leads to quite funny quiproquos.
A quiproquo is a word
that comes from Latin and means
a misunderstanding, a confusion.
The professor is also very stunned,
very distracted, so all this
causes a lot of funny
and funny situations.
So surrounded by all his friends,
Tintin and Milou live many adventures
traveling the world during
24 albums of the series.
We find them on all continents,
in Asia, in America, in Africa,
in Oceania, in Europe
and in many countries.
And they even went beyond the terrestrial continents
since in the album Objective Moon
released in 1953,
they went to the moon,
so 16 years before Neil Armstrong.
We love Tintin because the comic
takes us on a trip
and at the time it came out,
international tourism was not as popular
as it is now, so the comic
makes us meet other cultures very easily.
In addition, we identify
with these different characters,
very endearing for their character.
They mix suspense,
thrill, science fiction,
humor, so a perfect cocktail
to have a good time.
RG died in 1983
at the age of 75
and he didn't have time to finish
the last album of Tintin's adventures,
even if it came out posthumously.
The series was not
resumed by another cartoonist,
but Tintin was adapted
in a TV series I watched
when I was little,
but also many times in the cinema,
including a film directed
by Steven Spielberg.
By the way, RG would have been very happy
if a great director paid homage
to him in this way.
The comic was also adapted
in theater or video games
and the albums sold
more than 250 million copies
all over the world.
They have been translated in more than 90 languages.
In short, a crazy success
for this Belgian hero
who has become an international star.
Tell me in the comments
if you knew Tintin
and if you like him.
What is your favorite character
and what is his name in your language?
I would be curious to know.
That's all you need to know about Tintin.
I put the link of the video on Asterix
in the cards and in the description
if you want to know everything about it.
