In 1997, Art Bell, host of Coast to Coast AM,
a popular radio talk show that discussed strange occurrences and inexplicable phenomena,
received a fax from a man named Mel Waters.
In the fax, Mel mentioned an unusual pit of unknown origin
on his property in Manistash, Washington.
The pit was, in his words, groundless
and frightened the animal world in the area so much that birds never flew over it.
The letter read,
Dear Art, I am writing to see if I can get some help from you or your large audience.
I live in the rural east of Washington, near Manistash Ridge.
There is a hole on our property.
Like the previous owners and the owners before them, we threw our garbage into the hole.
Apparently, the hole exists as long as anyone can remember.
At first I thought it was an ancient well.
In any case, the hole has a diameter of three meters.
It is surrounded by a stony support wall
and we have attached a steel door at the top so that no one can fall in.
As I said before, people threw their garbage into the hole.
For decades. Furniture, household waste, dead cows, construction waste, whatever.
The thing is, I noticed that the hole was never filled,
so I got curious, actually obsessed,
and started trying to measure the depth of the hole.
I taught three fishing rods with about 1,400 meters monofile to determine the depth.
Soon I bought fishing line in large quantities.
So far, I have sunk about 24,000 meters of line into the hole without reaching the bottom.
My wife works at a local university with a geological department.
We hope to get professional scientific help in determining the depth of the hole.
As far as I can tell, apart from two other things, there is nothing particularly strange about it.
Dogs refuse to get closer than 30 meters to the hole.
Birds do not sit on the support wall or the metal door.
Another strange thing is that there is no echo when you scream into the hole.
In fact, I have never heard anything hit the ground when it was thrown in.
We once threw an old refrigerator in and we never heard it hit the ground.
No cracking or banging.
I hope your listeners can help with possible explanations.
I wonder if this could be the deepest hole on earth according to my previous measurements.
Signed, Mel Waters.
Soon after, Art Bell invited Mel to appear on his radio show,
where Mel introduced the world to something that was to become one of the most famous mysteries of the 21st century.
Mel's hole.
In Mel's telephone interview from Allensburg, Washington, about 130 kilometers from his property,
he told Bell that he had bought the Manistash property a few years ago
and that the hole had always been there.
Mel said that everyone in the area, including the neighbors,
knew pretty well about the hole and would regularly throw garbage in it.
People left broken heavy machines, garbage, stones and, in one case, a dead dog.
Mel told a story about a neighbor whose dog had died.
Instead of burying the animal, Mel's neighbor decided to use the practical hole as a grave for his dog
and threw it in with his short hand.
A few days later, hunters saw his faithful dog crawling through the forest in perfect condition.
Mel's neighbor said that the dog was unharmed, but never reacted to his calls or whines,
but ran around like on the hunt.
He was sure it was his dog when he recognized the collar.
It was obvious that Mel's hole was more than just an ordinary hole.
It was a round, well-shaped pit, a little more than two meters wide,
with a stony support wall on the sides, which stretched about a few meters into the depth,
before it fell into the ground.
The inside was pitch black and the depth was inexplicable.
Mel tried to measure the depth.
After he had dropped heavy tools into the hole
and did not hear a crack or bang, he became particularly curious.
He decided to do a test.
Mel suspected that the pit could be filled with mud or mud,
thus the lack of noises or echoes.
So he tied a few life-saving sweets to the end of a fishing line and let them into the hole.
When the sweets dissolved, there was water at the end.
Mel's line ended after 460 meters and he pulled it up.
The sweets were whole.
The next time Mel bought several fishing lines and attached a lead weight to them.
Slowly he lowered the cable into the hole.
Spool by spool into the hole, but nothing happened.
The hole just kept eating the line.
After a while Mel stopped.
He discovered that he had lowered about 24,000 meters of cord into the hole.
A little more than 24 kilometers of rope, but he hadn't reached the end yet.
The hole had no end.
Mel had contacted Art to help him mark the depth of the pit,
as he was clearly overwhelmed.
Art suggested letting a volunteer into the hole with bottles.
But Mel was skeptical of this idea.
He said that the mysterious phenomena near the pit could harm any volunteer.
There could also be poisonous gases,
and the pressure of the surrounding earth could overwhelm anyone who went in.
Mel refused, although a call had voluntarily reported.
He did not want to be responsible for whatever happened to anyone who dared to enter the abyss.
Strangely enough, Mel admitted that he would jump into the pit
if a life-threatening disease was diagnosed with him.
He believed that the pit had unknown forces that could probably rejuvenate him.
The call lasted into the night,
and people called to explain this strange phenomenon.
Mel's hole was the topic of the evening,
and it would remain a topic of Coast to Coast for the coming years.
In a second fax to the radio, only four days after the broadcast,
Mel Art informed that Mel had returned to his home in Manistash exactly one day after the broadcast.
On his return, he found that the road to his property was blocked by armed military personnel,
who prevented him from entering the property.
They claimed that an airplane had crashed on his land and investigated it.
However, Mel had not noticed any smoke or debris near the site.
Instead, he had seen men in yellow equipment,
probably protective suits, moving through the area.
Mel asked to speak to an official, and they told the same story.
They threatened him in a subtle way and indicated that the land was not necessarily Mel's property
and that they could easily find a drug lab on it.
Mel said he would go to the press, but the uniformed spied on him
and challenged him by explaining that no one would believe him anyway.
Mel added that his neighbors had told him something interesting about the hole.
He said that some time before the broadcast he had seen a black beam
that came out of the hole like a searchlight that reached into the sky.
It seemed to have no end, and it sucked in the light around it.
Art Bell immediately invited Mel for a second call to the show.
He asked if there were any new developments in the military issue.
Mel also told Bell that he had received a message from his real estate agent,
indicating that someone was interested in buying Mel's property.
There was no offer yet, but his agent assured him that it would be plentiful.
Mel also spoke about an older man who told him that the hole was once surrounded by stone pillars,
similar to Stonehenge.
Does this mean that the hole is much older than anyone imagined?
Could the hole have been there since ancient times?
A caller from the same area reported that his college professor in 1989
had also spoken of a large barrel without a floor.
Another caller noticed that Mel's property was next to the Yakima Training Center,
an institution of the government.
Hence the quick military intervention.
Before the end of the call, the audience urged Mel to be careful,
as the area was a well-known place for UFO sightings and strange occurrences.
They were interested in Mel's story and hoped that he would return.
But they did not know that Mel was to return only three years later.
Mel did not call back to tell the show about his property or the lucrative offer he had received.
For over three years no one heard from him.
It seemed as if he had disappeared from the earth.
In 2002, however, Art Bell finally noticed him and brought him back to the show.
He had Mel tell his story about the hole and checked whether he remembered the facts.
Mel did.
Mel Waters also has a crazy secret to reveal.
Some people offered him $250,000 a month for an indefinite lease on the property.
All he had to do was take the money, never talk about the hole and move on.
Mel, of course, took the money and emigrated to Australia.
When Art Bell asked why he never appeared again in the show or called from Australia,
Mel told a frightening story.
In December 1999, when he was supposed to appear in the show,
he tried to help his nephew move into an apartment in the Olympia district.
After he had brought the moving truck back to Tacoma,
Mel had to take a bus back to Olympia.
The strangest thing happened.
His bus was stopped by the traffic police for a dispute.
He was taken to a second bus with other passengers.
And that was all he remembered.
About 12 days later, Mel found himself in a dirty alley in San Francisco again.
His personal belongings were missing, and he found an infusion patch on his arm.
His cheekbones had also been removed while he was unconscious.
Desperately, Mel turned to his nephew, who bought him a ticket back to Olympia.
A few days after his arrival, Mel found that a complaint had been filed against him.
It was his ex-wife, the real owner of the property.
And she sued him for violation of the conditions of his original rental contract.
The violations included the construction of an underground fuel system,
a clear pit and paved roads.
Mel didn't build any of it.
But maybe the government did.
A highly fascinating and somewhat unbelievable part of Mel's story revolves around a simple cent.
After he woke up in San Francisco, Mel noticed that his belt buckle was missing.
It was a self-made buckle, consisting of a curved fork, stones and coins,
which were found in the area.
Mel had made ten of these buckles with ten Roosevelt dimes,
which were found in a mysterious red Chinese lucky money envelope.
Mel wondered why they had taken his belt,
so he made one of the men find out where he had sold his tailor-made belt.
When examining the coins in the belt, Mel discovered that the cent was made in 1943,
although there were no cents with Roosevelt's portrait in 1943.
In addition, every American coin has a letter that indicates the place where it was made.
This cent printed the letter B,
although no city in the history of US currency has ever started with the letter B.
It was highly unusual, and they sent him to a coin expert to have him evaluated.
A few days later, however, the expert claimed that the Ministry of Finance had confiscated the coins from him.
Richard C. Hoagland, a hyperdimensional physicist, theoretician and famous alien researcher,
later suggested that the coins could come from a parallel universe.
If these coins, which were found near Mel's hole, come from another parallel universe,
does that mean that the hole is a kind of interdimensional portal?
And if so, are there other groundless holes on the planet that work in the same way?
With the fame that Mel's country gained, a group of Native Americans in Nevada heard Mel on the air
and invited him to their reservation by e-mail to talk about a strange pit that dates back to the 19th century,
up to an old town of Basque settlers in the area.
The Basques are a small and mostly isolated ethnic group from a small region of Europe.
They bred sheep in Nevada and viewed the hole as a holy ground.
All in all, it was three meters wide, just like Mel's hole.
Only this one has a metal collar with notches at the top.
The metal felt warm and made no noise when hit.
The natives also feared this hole.
Mel and the villagers decided to undergo several tests in the shaft.
Like Mel's hole, this one also seemed to be groundless.
They wondered what would happen if a living being climbed into the depth of the hole.
Then they decided to test this by letting a sheep into the pit.
The sheep turned around before it was even let down.
It roared and fought against the hands that lowered it into the hole.
Eventually, the villagers knocked the sheep unconsciously and let it fall into the hole.
About halfway through, the sheep woke up and made a terrible scream.
It took a while before it stopped.
The villagers quickly brought the sheep back, but Mel saw that it was dead.
The cause of death was unknown.
Over the years, several theories were set up to explain the mysteries of Mel's hole.
The first explanation was volcanic caves.
Where volcanic rock is exposed, caves of different types and sizes can form.
They are formed by flowing lava near the land surface and can be easily destroyed by erosion.
The longest and most complex forms of volcanic caves are lava pipes.
They are formed from the lava flows that used to flow down the slope from a volcano or a crevice.
Lava pipes are best formed in high-fluid lava, especially basalt rock.
The state of Washington is based on a highly active volcanic hotspot.
And it could be that Mel's hole was a very resistant lava pipe that formed thousands of years ago.
But that doesn't explain all the other strange phenomena in the hole.
The second theory is connected to the theory of the hollow earth,
from which we have a whole 40-minute documentation,
in which we present many scientific clues that support this theory.
This is the idea that the earth is hollow under a fairly small layer of rock.
In relation to Mel's hole, the idea is that the fishing line and the objects thrown into it
never seem to reach the ground, because the hole led into the empty interior of the planet.
The next theory was that the whole thing was a kind of secret government project.
The fact that the pit was located near the Yakima Training Center also made this story plausible.
How come, however, that the government has allowed humans to explore the hole for so many years
and to use it as a waste disposal site?
On December 20, 2002, Mel Waters appeared for the last time at Coast to Coast AM.
He told Art Bell the most shocking story of all.
He said that the American natives near the second hole communicated with a kind of interdimensional creature
that used the hole for communication.
He claimed that the creature described itself as capable of traveling through the worlds
and gave mankind a gloomy warning.
The creature warned of the use of weapons that used the power of two holes
and that we would destroy ourselves if we used this power for military purposes.
It was said that other beings on other planets were waiting for our destruction
so that they could come here and besiege our planet again.
After this extremely strange and shocking broadcast, you never heard anything about Mel Waters again.
He no longer sold books or paid any attention to himself.
He just disappeared.
The true location of Mel's hole also remained a mystery.
But what exactly was Mel's hole?
Was it a strictly secret military project or a kind of time travel gate?
Or was it a portal to an alternative dimension like the wormholes of quantum physics?
These are questions that may never be answered in our time.
Not if all records about Mel Waters and the hole in history have been deleted.
Mel's inability to provide concrete photographic evidence also contributes to the mystery surrounding this phenomenon
and makes many people think that the whole thing is just a hoax.
