legs. Relentless pressure from that Wolverine defense on every
down. McSorley throws over the middle, Friermuth, the freshman
tight end has a catch on a slant out to midfield. Hamler in the
slot to the right on second and ten. McSorley looks back to his
left and he'll be sacked right away by Chase Winovich, the
Pennsylvania native. He's the guy that carries the mouthpiece
for this defense. He's right here. He's just going to fight
through the right tackle right. The guard comes over just to
kind of use the leg to try to hold him out. But Winovich has
had a hard time sleeping this week. He is so excited. Michigan
brings pressure again. McSorley sacked by Josh Uche. It's three
and out for the initial 25 yard game. Gilligan gets a low line
drive punt away that Peoples-Jones will just let roll
dead at about the 24 yard line. Not in the game. Higdon's got it
again and he's got room. And Kermon Higdon banged down after
a first down game at the 35. It's a pen back was set out the
first half of the last game. Higdon off and running into the
secondary. Knifing deep into Penn State territory as Scott
finally runs him down at the 15. Wolverines threaten
immediately. Anderson keeps it. Michigan strikes first. McSorley
design run takes off and shows that the knee appears to be just
fine. Now where did he begin to give himself up? If it's short
of the 35, it's not a first down. Well, it's gonna be short.
Yeah, they're gonna have to take a peek at this because it's a
great call by Penn State to go with the quarterback draw. See
the defense clears out a little bit of movement up front. It
looked like no review and Gilligan again. It's a low punt
that Peoples-Jones goes to his knees to make a fair catch. Good
point. It's where the ball is people get locked in on the knee
but in the slot, motion tight and Gentry to the left side and
he gets the pass and he's got some space knocked out there by
Cole Farber. But Gentry, that big tall target, he's got a
first down. And Patterson takes a peek and now delivers a strike
across the middle. A slant to Peoples-Jones and a first down
in Penn State territory. Chris, watch out. They snap it and
Patterson looks to throw and it's broken up nicely. Stepping
in front of the tight end was Johnson and Lions make a stand.
Pass protection has been a huge issue early on. McSorley on a
slant and there's the catch made by Jahan Dotson. He's the
freshman receiver, a true freshman. Removed the red shirt
Kirk and they think they can get another quick threat on the
field to compliment Hamler. McSorley blitzed, gets it out
and it's incomplete. It was Dotson again but no chance to
make a play. LaVert Hill covered him and it's fourth
down. Let's see if he can do that here. Peoples-Jones gets
away from it and that is executed just about flawlessly.
Ball will bounce out of bounds inside the five and Patterson
and company will be pinned back there. To Griffin. Play action
fake and Patterson takes a peek downfield and now takes a shot
and Nico Collins comes back to make a catch. Underthrown but a
great adjustment from Collins and they're in Penn State
territory. He's looking at Nick Scott right in the middle of
your screen right here. The fact that he does not get deep
enough allows him on first intent play action. You got to
love the call and see how Forrest late in getting there.
The ball just a little bit underthrown because Nico Collins
went right by the secondary. Almost had a chance if the ball
was thrown out in front of him to take that into the end zone.
They are in field goal range for Nordean and they're gonna have
to try and field goal because Hickman is absolutely smothered
by big Keith Givens. Defensive tackle. They got to hurry. It's
a 50 yarder and it's blocked. Blocked by Penn State. Ball
spinning around at the 30 and Nordean now it's still alive.
Garrett Taylor's got the football. He's got blockers. A
flag comes in very late and he's working his way down the
sideline all the way to the end zone. Two flags on the play. But
of the very early ball was down. It was spinning around. There
was a stab around the ball. There's a big conference with
Jeff Stravinsky and this Big Ten crew. Another look at the
block. That was safety. Nick Scott. He's a special team star
as well as being a guy that's played almost 600 snaps at
safety. He's tireless. Used his quickness to get the
penetration and then Gentry, Michigan's tight end, couldn't
fall on the ball. We're looking to see where there might have
been a block that drew a flag. There was another flag very late
in the play. Personal foul. Illegal block below the waist.
Michigan. That penalty is declined. Personal foul. Illegal
block below the waist. During the run on Penn State, number
14. That 15 yard penalty will be enforced. On sportsmanlike
conduct, Michigan bench. For running into that 15 yard
penalty will be enforced. Penn State football. First down in
10. A matchup that they want to expose. Metellus against
Hamler. Fumble! Sanders in the exchange. Winovich has got the
football. And Winovich, a sack earlier and now a fumble
recovery. Just a mix up between the quarterback and the
running backs. Miles Sanders does not squeeze down on the
ball. And Trace is looking out here on this edge. He wants to
pull it out, but he can't get his hands on the football to be
able to pull it out. Patterson flushed. Looks to the end zone.
Touchdown! Donovan Jones! When given a chance to throw it down
field, Patterson has been pretty sharp. Well, this is a great
throw. A big time effort here by the Michigan offense to get
this in the end zone. And they took advantage of a miscue by
the Penn State defense. They had two defenders in the flat
instead of getting one of the defensive backs deep to take
that away.
Three and Mary, 25% the last four games and just no chance.
Instant pressure. Uche and Winovich at its fourth down.
And Iowa, much less Michigan, for Penn State. It's a good
boot. Gilligan drives it. And Peoples-Jones has a crease.
Slips a tackle and is knocked out deep in Penn State
territory by the punter. But the Wolverines are set up again.
Wright and Patterson. He's thinking about taking off. They
close it down quickly. And he's stopped by Jan Johnson, who
snuffed it out. Fourth down.
He appears to be trying to kick it away from him. He does kick
it with backspin.
And it's going to bounce and be down right about the 10-yard
line. Negative 12 yards, his rushing total so far.
Has time, no one to throw it to. Now delivers over the middle
and it's Friermuth, the tight end who beat Bush in coverage.
First down across the 40. Trying to play with a little more
tempo here from the 40-yard line. And sorely lops it up in
the middle. Hamler's got it. And he's inside the Michigan 40
before Kendall tackled him.
Wolverines crowding the line. They bring pressure. And
McSorley will be knocked down again. Jordan Glasgow, the
viper position on the sack.
Glasgow and Hudson walk up late. Affects the offensive line's
communication. Winovich is a factor. Gary, welcome back. He
gets in there, but eventually it's Glasgow, one of the vipers.
Moves him back.
Whoa, snap. Gilligan gets it away, but boots it in the end
zone.
Patterson on the third down. Steps up and incomplete. Trying
to find his tight end. McCune on the crossing route, and it's
broken up by Cam Brown.
Cam Brown was sitting there, Chris, just waiting.
And a low snap. Hart drives the ball right to where Hamler's
waiting. And K.J. stutters, taps. He's got the speed to get
the edge. A fly comes flying in again on this return. He's
tackled at the 36.
Third down. Woes continue. One of six. It's a run by McSorley.
He's going to be chased. Knocked down from behind. Devin Bush
has so much speed. And it's fourth down.
Gets it away. It's a pretty good punt. Peoples-Jones won't be
able to run this down. It'll bounce out of bounds at the 36.
So, he's two in the third down. And Higdon is going to be
smacked and dropped short. So Penn State's defense with gross
mottos on that stop. They come up with a couple big stops in
the third quarter now. Hart with a low boot. And Tompkins
lets this bounce over his head. Will it make the end zone? Yes.
There's Mr. Winovich. They pick him up with two blockers. And
McSorley tries to make something happen. Working hard, but he's
going to be knocked out of bounds by Kendall. Short of the
marker. Fourth down. Don't forget about them also having
terrific seasons. It's a great boot by Gilligan. Driven way
over the head of Peoples-Jones and into the end zone. It's
about a 74-yard punt. There's a flag down. Spearing the
football. On third and six, Patterson keeps it and gets a
first down across the 25-yard line. Strategic, efficient
running today, Kirk. Forcing punts on third down. And another
first down. Higdon off and running and is spun down inside
the Penn State 40. Drake Black in the game on third and seven.
Penn State shows pressure and brings it up the middle. And
they get it out and Evans has got space. Against Scott. And
he'll be run out of bounds at the 11-yard line. First down
Michigan. Play coming up. And Patterson tosses. Touchdown
Gentry. A Michigan marathon march of 90 yards. Shoes clock
and builds the lead to three touchdowns. And Tommy Stevens
is in at quarterback. And Stevens, a strong runner, takes
off and barrels out near midfield. So Stevens looking to
throw against the four-man rush will now take off and then
flips it right into the hands of Brendan Watson. Watson headed
down the sidelines. Still going. Wolverines pick six. Six,
Kirk, this is the fourth for Michigan this year. Yeah, and
I'm not sure where Stevens wants to go with the ball. He kind of
throws it between two wide receivers right to Watson, who's
one of the better coverage guys on this defense. They're going
to try to maybe take a peek to see if that right foot stayed
inbounds. But boy, a miscue here by Stevens. He's inbounds
there. We'll have to take another look. Clock ticking down
on third and five for Stevens. Here comes the pass rush. And he
eludes it for a while, able to gain a couple yards before Uche
got him. And here comes the punt team. Gilligan drives Peoples
Jones back to the 21. Gets a couple blocks. And Donovan
Peoples Jones still weaving his way through Penn State's
coverage team. And a nice return out near midfield. That
foot has healed. And now Evans breaks free into the secondary.
Evans with a stiff arm, gets the corner, weaves his way down into
the red zone. They might- comes in motion. They fake it to him.
Patterson stutter steps. Patterson hammers down first and
goal Michigan. No throttling back at all. Pail back, second
and goal. Higgins got it. And fighting, reaching, touchdown.
They put three tight ends in those last two or three plays
and kind of- and delivers, intercepted. But that was off
the receiver's hands. And now they're just taunting McSorley.
Yeah. Evans behind Mason. Touchdown. The lead is six
scores for Harbaugh's crew.
Up at a school like Penn State tells you all you need to know
about his career and what he's done as a Penn State starting
quarterback. And it's the way he's done it. Right. To me, it's
not the numbers. I mean, the number-
Not if the Wolverines can help it. Play action. Stevens is
chased and sacked. Khalik Hudson joins the party.
And they brought him up very late, disguising it. And then
he just sneaks in. Again, the pressure, the edge pressure too
much for this Penn State offensive line. They've not been
able to deal with it, whether it's been Hudson, who's
undersized, but quick.
Right near the line to make. Stevens chased. Running for his
life. Heaves it downfield and a catch is made. A terrific catch
by Jahan Dodson, the true freshman. First down.
Good effort there by the quarterback. Stevens, heck of a
throw and a tremendous effort by the freshman.
Stevens still has it. And Tommy Stevens scores standing up. And
there will be no shutout for Browns defense this afternoon.
And he looks disappointed.
Yeah, disappointed and give Penn State credit for continuing
to fight.
Northwestern came out very inspired against this Michigan
team. They led 17-0 quickly. Wolverines were were knocked
sideways, but eventually recovered in a hard-earned
victory. This is a sweet victory. The Revenge Tour has
claimed another victim. An emphatic payback game as Harbaugh
and Franklin make their way toward midfield and a handshake.
We'll see if it's a warm and fuzzy one. Doubt it. Quick pat
in the back. Harbaugh's crew got exactly what they wanted
except the shutout. 42-7. Michigan takes a step closer to
a Big Ten title and perhaps a playoff bid.
