Hello, my name is Mina. I am from Japan.
Well, this is how you would expect for me to speak as a Japanese, right?
I did live in the United States due to my parents' job from age 10 to 15.
But I had to work really, really, really hard to acquire the English skills that I have today.
When I first stepped my foot in the United States, I only knew alphabet up to E.
I only knew about 10 words, such as thank you, sorry, my name is, box, about it.
I cried almost every single day, not being able to understand a word my classmates or my teachers said.
I am still not perfect in English.
And I'm still learning every single day, just like everyone here.
But I am confident that I have suffered more than most of the people in the English learning journey.
And I know a lot about the learning process.
So I decided to sit down and make a video about sharing tips that I wish I had known back then when I was struggling.
I have many tips about pronunciation, reading, writing, listening, speaking, and so on.
But I have decided to share tips about vocabulary today because it will reflect in the results very quickly.
If you guys like these kind of videos, please like and comment down below on what you want to learn in the future.
So let's get to the video.
There are three things I want to share today.
First one is prefix.
Second one is suffix.
Then third one is the root words.
Understanding these drastically increased my vocabulary.
And it still helps me figure out the meaning of the words when I first encounter them.
So what is a prefix?
According to the Cambridge Dictionary Online, the definition of prefix is a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word.
For example, let's take a look at the word unhappy.
This word can be broken into two parts.
An prefix, an, which means not.
And the base word, happy.
So the entire word means not happy.
Other common prefixes are dis, which means not.
And it can be found in disappear.
Another is in, which also means not.
It can be found in inexpensive, not expensive.
Other is re, which means again.
It can be used in reuse, recycle, return.
Another one is miss, which means wrong.
It can be found in misunderstanding.
Another one is pre, which means before.
The word prefix, which is the term that I just explained, has pre in it.
Another one is non, which means not.
It can be used in non-fishing or non-fat milk.
Another one is deep, which means opposite.
Decrease.
Next, I want to explain about suffixes.
So what are suffixes?
Definition of a suffix, according to the Cambridge Dictionary Online,
is a letter or group of letters added at the end of a word to make a new word.
So we had a prefix, which came before a root word.
Now we have suffix, which comes after the root words.
One of the common suffixes, there are a ton, but I would like to choose one, and able.
For example, the word washable.
It consists of a base word, wash, and a suffix, able.
Put together, it means able to wash.
Now I would like to go on to other common suffixes.
Able, which also means able.
It can be found in edible, which means able to eat.
Another one is are, which means more.
And it can be found in bigger, smaller, fuller.
Another one is full, which means full of.
It can be used in thankful.
Another one is less, which means without, cashless.
Cashless payment means payment without cash.
Another one is meant, which means action or result, or resulting state.
It can be found in judgment.
Another common one is lee.
It means in a specific manner.
So one example is slowly, quietly, beautifully.
Okay, so these are the common used suffixes.
And in other textbooks, in some textbooks, the followings are also considered as a suffix as well.
One is ed.
It, past tense verb.
It is found in walked.
Ing, which is the present tense of book.
It can be found in singing, eating, jogging.
Another one is s or es, which shows it's a plural form of something.
It is used in boxes or notes.
These are also considered as suffixes in some textbooks.
If you want to learn more suffix or prefixes, you can Google them.
Search prefix or suffixes.
Or you could also look at the PDF I have put down in the description box below from teacherscholastic.com.
It's not sponsored or anything. I thought it was a really nice list.
We used to print these lists of prefixes and suffixes and put them in the bathroom wall.
So every time I went, I had to see it.
So you can check them down below.
And maybe you can print one of your own and put it on places that you would like to see on a daily basis.
Lastly, I want to share about roots.
As we have seen, a lot of the words are in the following structure.
One, prefix plus a base word.
Two, prefix plus a base word plus a suffix.
Three, base word plus a suffix.
Root word is something that can be used in the place of the base words.
So base words are usually English word that can be understood by itself.
Root words, on the other hand, are words or word parts that comes from Greek or Latin.
Some root words can be by itself to be understood in English.
But most of the root words can not be by itself to be understood.
It is usually accompanied by a prefix or suffix to create a new word.
First, I would like to go through some of the Latin root words that I thought were interesting when I first learned it.
Some of the Latin words are so famous or commonly used that you might already know.
For example, ast or aster, which means star.
It is used in asteroids.
Astronauts are people who go to space on a spaceship.
Another one is bio, which means life.
So it is used in biography, which is a book about a person's life.
And biology, which is a study of life.
Another one is chrono, which means time.
This is one of my favorite ones.
Chronic, which means continuing or reoccurring.
And again and again for a long time.
Synchronized, which means to happen at the same time.
Last one, I like this one the most.
Chronological, which means arranged in the order of time.
I just like the pronunciation of it, chronological.
Another one is dyna, which means power.
You can find this in dynasty, a powerful group of family that maintains its position for a considerable amount of time.
And it can also be found in dynamic, which means energetic, right?
It can also be found in dynamite, a bomb that's very, very powerful.
Another one is, I've said a little bit about it, but logos, which means word or study of something.
We did aster, which means star earlier, right?
If you put aster and logos together, it's astrology, study of space.
We did bio earlier, which means life.
And you can put bio and logos together, it means biology.
So now let's move on to Greek root words.
I've picked out a few that I thought were interesting.
First is bene, which means good.
It is used in benefits, right?
Or benign, which means like when you have a tumor and you test out whether it's benign or not.
Benign means it's not bad.
It's not going to turn into cancer.
Another one is dict, which means say.
Dictation is part of the English learning methods that you do.
You listen, you say it, it's called dictation.
And it can be found in dictionaries, right?
The book that you refer to.
Another one is gen, which means to birth.
This is found in the word gene.
Another one is manu, which means hand.
It is used in manicure, right?
I don't have any on right now, but manicure.
Manipulate.
Another one is omni.
I also like this one.
I have a short story to tell.
This means all.
And I had learned this first at learning about other types of animals.
Some animals are carnivores that only eat meats or other animals.
Arbivores that eat grass or plants, right?
Omnivores are animals that eat both plants and meat.
So we are all, most of us are omnivores, right?
So when I was taking my entrance exam for high school,
the word omnipotent had shown up.
I had never seen it before.
But because I knew omni meant all,
and potent, I mean, it sounded something like potential, right?
So I was like, okay, that person may be able to do all, has all the potentials.
And I could figure out the meaning without looking at the dictionary.
And omnipotent actually means all the potential or all the power.
So it helped me get through my high school.
And I still remember that.
So that's a merit.
It's a huge merit of learning the root words.
Okay, so four more root words.
There are so much more.
I just picked out maybe five from each Greek and Latin roots.
But you should learn about maybe 25 each.
So 50 root words to get you to a next level.
And for the root words, I have also put down the URL down in the description below.
So you can check them out.
Once again, this is not sponsored at all.
Yeah, and that is all for this video.
