Lecture 01

Hello, and welcome to this course, Applied Numerical Methods. My name is Malai Das, I'll be your instructor in this course. And together over the next 12 weeks, we'll have a meaningful experience about numerical methods and different aspects of its application. And this week, we'll concentrate on what are numerical methods to begin with, and why we need them. Here, we mean we by engineers. So why engineers need numerical methods, we'll talk about it. But this will be only the introductory section of the course, we'll immediately jump into numerical method to see actually how it works. And to do so, we'll start with application of numerical methods in solving equations with one unknown. To use this course material to its fullest, my suggestion for this week's material is that wherever you find problems, exercise and homework, you try to solve this problem analytically, which means without using numerical methods as much as possible. And then when you do use numerical methods, then you solve problem using usual calculations, pen and paper calculations in an electronic calculator, and without using any sort of computer programming. This will give you a very basic understandings about the problems itself. And then subsequently, we'll start applying computer programs. Now, in the context of this overall 12 weeks work, you can see that our week one comprises of course introduction, algorithm development, root finding, role examples of numerical methods on practical problem solving, and we'll only talk about this part this week, the remaining part will come subsequently.
