Once upon a time, there were two newcomers to a small village.
The first newcomer was a man named John, who was a pessimist.
He had always seen the worst in people, and he expected the village to be full of nasty
and greedy people.
The second newcomer was a woman named Mary, who was an optimist.
She had always seen the best in people, and she expected the village to be full of sweet
and caring people.
John went to the village Zen master and asked,
Do you think I will like it in this village?
Are the people nice?
The Zen master asked John, How are the people in the town where you came from?
They were nasty and greedy, John said.
They were angry and lived for cheating and stealing.
Those are exactly the type of people we have in this village, the Zen master said.
Mary also went to the Zen master and asked the same question.
The Zen master asked Mary, How are the people in the town where you came from?
They were sweet and lived in harmony, Mary said.
They cared for one another and for the land.
They respected each other and they were seekers of spirit.
Those are exactly the type of people we have in this village, the Zen master said.
John and Mary were both surprised by the Zen master's answer.
John thought that the Zen master was joking, but Mary knew that the Zen master was speaking
the truth.
John and Mary both stayed in the village, and they both had very different experiences.
John continued to see the bad in people, and he was constantly getting into arguments.
Mary, on the other hand, continued to see the good in people, and she made many friends.
One day, John and Mary were walking through the village when they saw a group of people
arguing.
John started to get involved in the argument, but Mary stopped him.
Why are you getting involved in this?
Mary asked.
These people are just going to bring you down.
But they're wrong, John said.
They're being nasty and greedy.
Maybe they are, Mary said, but you don't have to be like them.
You can choose to see the good in them.
John thought about what Mary said, and he realized that she was right.
He didn't have to be like the other people in the village.
He could choose to see the good in them.
John started to see the good in people, and his life changed for the better.
He made more friends, and he was happier.
He realized that the Zen master was right.
We create our own reality, and we can choose to see the good in the world.
The moral of the story is that we have the power to create our own reality.
We can choose to see the bad in the world, or we can choose to see the good.
The choice is ours.
