You have to be ready to suffer to reach the other side, you know the other side of suffering
is a whole other world whose people do not even suspect the existence.
From the very beginning, the way I became what I am today, I grew up being very weak, very unsure of myself.
When I was a child, I was beaten a lot, not only physically, but mentally too.
My father was an alcoholic,
so
he was very violent with me when I was growing up, not only towards me, but also towards my mother.
And from there, as soon as I was born, my foundations were cracked. So with these bad foundations,
and a mother who also had bad foundations,
I had no one to, you know, make me understand the rules, show me the way. We had moved to a small city in Indiana,
in Brazil, in Indiana, and there were like five black families there.
So I happened to be treated as a nigger regularly. I didn't have many friends, but you know, when you have this kind of foundation,
the only thing you really see is the negative.
You can't see the people who love you. All you see are the people who don't love you.
So over time, this foundation only weakened and weakened.
And over the years, I started to struggle. I had a lot of problems with people. I suffered from social anxiety.
I copied throughout my schooling. I had learning difficulties, so I cheated a lot at school.
And when you get to this stage of your life, and that
no one is there to help you,
you have to find solutions.
So what made me what I am today, is essentially these bad foundations, and the fact of not loving my situation.
And so I had to learn to repair this foundation completely alone.
And what happens is that you really have to develop a great mental strength, but for me,
the mental strength was not enough. For me, I really had to develop an insensitive mind.
So I had a victim mentality. I was a victim. I told myself that everyone around me had ruined my life.
My father, society, my mother, no matter what it is.
I got the bad cards. Except that this point of view leads you to a victim mentality.
And so I developed a way to overcome this victim mentality,
which is to harden my mind.
So I literally remodeled my mentality,
by overcoming
all my faults. And I developed a work ethic, which has become, you know,
quite simply what it is today. And that's what makes me today the title of the most resistant man on planet Earth.
I'm not the best person in the world. I'm certainly not the smartest. I'm nothing of all that.
I just learned to surpass absolutely everyone around me. And that's what led me to where I am today.
I don't lead a very glamorous life.
I live in a very uncomfortable way for most people.
It's not that I'm poor. It's not that I don't have the means to do otherwise.
It's like a boxer.
A boxer can have a house worth 4 million dollars.
But before a big fight, he's going to go to the mountains for two months,
to train in a world totally isolated and without comfort. He's going to live in a barn, sleep on the ground.
What this boxer does is that he tries to model his mentality.
He brings his mentality back to a very wild state.
So that when he gets in the ring,
his mentality makes him ready to give everything he needs to win this boxing match.
So what I realized, growing up from these bad foundations, is that I had a very, very weak mind.
And today I live this way, like this boxer who trains for this big fight.
You see, but I live like this all the time.
So what I do is I sharpen my sword. And the way I sharpen this sword,
is that I start from the principle that the finish line is never reached.
I will never reach it. And every time I get closer to the top of a mountain,
what I do is I push myself to fall back.
Voluntarily. Because I believe that true growth is made from scratch.
It is by starting from scratch that you really grow. You have to face friction in your life so that you can move forward.
Today, many people tell me that I am the most resistant man on the planet.
But I got there thanks to an endless work ethic.
Today we live in a society where mediocrity is often rewarded.
Like, mediocrity is almost the norm.
And in my eyes, if you live this way,
you only have what you deserve.
Let's say you are next to ten people. These ten people are all mediocre.
And you beat these people in a race, or at work, or whatever.
The truth is that you remain mediocre.
What we do in life, is that we set our standards compared to others.
What we do in life, is that we look at what someone else has done before us.
And then it becomes our norm. I do not look at the norm of anyone. I set my own standards.
And if I have become, as people say, the most resistant man on the planet,
it is literally because I have established my own standards. I started to
reinvent the wheel for my own life. I did not follow the crowd, no matter what they could do. I did not follow anyone.
I did what I had to do to get where I wanted to go. And that's where the real growth is.
That's the only way you'll find yourself. I'm not trying to look like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, or whoever.
I'm trying to be David Gogitz. And that's the only way you'll find out what you're made of, by trying to conquer yourself.
3, 2, 1, GO!
Here is the advice I would give to people who are going through a difficult period.
Today, many people know my story. I come from a very, very complicated environment.
But you have to be open to the subject. Like, for example, on social networks.
Today, many people are on social networks. And what they do is that they show you their best side.
Everyone on the networks, everyone in this world. If you have friends, everyone has two sides.
We have this side that we want people to see. It's our best side. It's our best side.
But we also have this side that we don't work on. And this side that we don't work on is the one that we don't want anyone to see.
On social networks, for example, everyone talks about their holidays. You know, like, I'm going to go there, I'm here.
There, it's me in the gym. There, it's me here. There, it's me there.
What I do, personally, is that I highlight my bad side.
I want everyone to know that I am this, that, and that. That I have to work on all these things.
It's okay. So the first thing to do is to accept the fact that everyone judges you, that you judge yourself.
And that it's okay to be shit.
It's okay not to be exactly like the others.
It's okay not to follow the crowd.
So that's one of the things I would say to people.
Don't worry about what others do.
Worry about what you do.
Focus on what you do, because everyone else, all these people who judge you, they also have problems.
And that's when I realized myself.
I stopped comparing myself to others, and I started comparing myself to myself.
I am... I am my own hero.
I am my own hero.
I think that a lot more people can identify with difficulty than with success.
People identify a lot more with difficulties.
You know, I identify a lot more with a person who is getting out of shit.
Most of us in this world are outsiders.
Very few of us count among the 1%.
And when I say these 1%, I mean these people who are like...
These great CEOs, these people who are the best basketball players, the best golfers.
Very few people are there.
But I address all these people who are between the bottom and the middle.
And who try to reach the top.
Everything is a matter of work ethics.
That's why everyone loves the story of Rocky.
But the thing about that,
is that to embody a story like Rocky,
you must not forget to move your fucking ass.
And very few people are ready to do this part of the way.
It's the hard part.
When it comes to challenging fate.
To surpass yourself.
That's what Rocky is.
To create a story like Rocky.
I was obsessed by the people who were fighting.
The people who were at the bottom.
Egos.
I was obsessed with the idea of observing these people.
And so I was absorbed in front of this movie.
Rocky 1, 14th round.
And the reason why this round, precisely.
And still today, I am 43 years old today.
Still today, this movie gives me chills.
Because I remember when I was 10, 11, 12 years old.
I remember the first time I watched this movie.
That I fell on this 14th round.
In Rocky 1.
I will never forget this guy, Rocky.
Who is getting his ass kicked.
And Apollo Creed, who doesn't stop knocking him down.
Who was tearing him apart.
And all Rocky was looking for, was to keep the distance.
And for many people, it doesn't make any sense.
But for a child who is looking for strength.
You are looking to know if it is possible.
Would I be able to accomplish the impossible?
And when I watched this movie.
This is what I saw.
I saw this unknown boxer.
Who was about to fight the best boxer in the world.
Apollo Creed.
And I saw this guy on the ring.
Rocky.
To fall, get up again and again.
And on the 14th round.
Apollo is just killing this guy.
But Apollo is also starting to get tired.
He is extremely tired.
And Apollo puts him to the ground.
On the 14th round.
For like, the 30th time.
And even Rocky's coach, Mickey.
Asks him to stay on the ground.
At this moment, Apollo turns his back to him.
He turns his back to him.
Thinking, that's it, I beat this guy.
He thinks he finally finished beating him.
This guy who didn't stop coming back to the charge.
Who was getting up again and again.
Apollo Creed turns to the crowd.
Arms in the air.
He turned his back to Rocky.
Just assuming he wasn't going to get up.
Thinking, that's it, I got him.
He grabs his rope.
To try to get up.
At this moment, he is totally destroyed.
He has nothing left to give.
But he found something.
And that's the thing about all of this.
He found something.
And I saw this guy get up.
Once standing.
Apollo Creed turns around.
And sees this.
And Apollo Creed's look.
Most people don't even pay attention to this detail.
The expression I saw on Apollo Creed's face.
Was an expression of total fear.
Like, what the hell?
Who is this guy?
Who am I fighting?
At this moment, it's like Apollo Creed's soul
had just left his body.
The reason why this scene resonates so much with me.
Is that during all my life.
I lived in such a mess.
I felt like I was in a hole.
Like I had nowhere to go.
Like I had so many problems and so many things to overcome.
By myself.
I wanted all the obstacles.
And all the people who doubted me.
To look like Apollo Creed.
I wanted people.
Whatever they are.
People, obstacles, whatever.
To look at me and say,
My God, this guy will never stop coming back to the charge.
I wanted to have the same thing as Rocky.
This ability.
To constantly go back to the attack.
I don't care about winning.
I don't care about being the best.
It's not about being the most resistant man in the world.
What matters to me is to go back to it continuously.
So for years and years and years.
To visualize this scene.
Of this guy,
rising again.
For some people, it's just a movie.
But for me, it just became
what my reality had to become.
I had to become this guy.
Who can run on fractured legs
during the week of hell.
The one who can endure the most pain and suffering.
To get where I want to go.
I will have to be this guy.
And a lot of people will never understand.
Because a lot of people think
they don't have this kind of state of mind.
But the truth is that we all have it.
I started from nothing.
And the fact is that we all have the ability to start from nothing.
To get to something.
The Poi Cookie is something I developed years ago.
So what can happen to me.
And what happens to a lot of us.
Is that we find ourselves
throughout my life.
I have been confronted with fights.
I threw myself into difficult situations.
I deliberately put obstacles in front of me.
To see how I would react.
Like for example.
I have already run 329 km in one time.
Non-stop.
Do you know what goes through your head?
When your goal is to run more than 320 km.
And you are only at 160th.
You are at 160th km.
You have been running for more than 24 hours.
And your body is broken.
You are destroyed.
You have nothing left in the tank.
Except that you still have more than 160 km to run.
How are you going to continue?
So I came up with this thing I call the Poi Cookie.
The Poi Cookie is a reminder.
That's all it is.
It's a reminder.
Because even the hardest person on the planet forgets.
How hard it is.
When times get hard.
When times are hard.
The mind gets mad.
Your mind blows up.
He panics. He goes somewhere else.
We forget.
But this Poi Cookie.
Contains all these things.
All these things you have overcome.
All these things that made you suffer.
All the things that got in the way of your path.
And that you crossed.
So you go into your mental Poi Cookie.
When you cross a bad space.
That you want to give up and withdraw.
And there you start to think.
Ok David. What did you do?
You finished two weeks of hell.
You went to the Ranger School.
You did this. You did that.
It is there to remind you.
That you are this hard to cook.
The Poi Cookie is that.
You take a second.
When you are in an extreme environment.
And your mind and your body tell you.
That it's over.
We have to stop.
But at that moment.
You have to tell yourself.
Wait a second.
I have already overcome so much more than that.
And I have the strength.
To persevere.
To go forward.
The What If mentality.
Is a mentality that is there.
To allow you to realize the impossible.
Many of us in this world.
Have already heard people tell us.
That we can not do something.
You can not do it.
You are too small.
You are not beautiful enough.
You do not act in the right way.
You are not smart enough.
And I let myself be slowed down by that.
A large part of my life.
I weighed 135 kg.
And all the recruiters of the Navy who saw me told me that.
Except one.
Each recruiter told me.
It's not possible.
You weigh 135 kg.
And you have to lose so much weight.
So fast.
They all told me.
You can not do that.
Except that I got in my car.
And I said to myself.
What if I could do it?
What if I could realize this fucking miracle?
How would I feel at the very end.
I was wrong.
To all probabilities.
This guy told me that I was the 36th Afro-American Navy SEAL.
In all the history of the Navy.
For more than 70 years.
This guy told me that there were only 35 Afro-Americans.
To have never been Navy SEAL.
Basically what he told me is that.
That I did not have what it took.
I listened to that.
And I said to myself.
What if I became the 36th?
Instead of taking what he told me.
To take all this negativity that he was proving to me.
I'm on the point of iron.
So most people who do not imagine being able to do what you are on the point of iron.
They think.
It's like a mirror.
They send you back to the face.
If they can not see themselves do what you are on the point of iron.
So for them, you can not do it either.
So I take this mirror.
And I get rid of it.
And I say to myself.
What if I was the 36th person to do it?
So I use all their negativity.
As a source of positivity.
And fuel.
To give the best of myself.
And it's an endless journey.
Today many people call me obsessed.
It's very good.
It's probably the truth.
But when you finally realize.
As for me.
I had very modest beginnings.
You realize that.
I could have literally given up.
Do not throw me.
I could have literally given up.
And today.
At 43 years old.
That many of us walk on this planet Earth.
Being.
A fraction.
Of what we are really capable of.
I remember.
What I was when I was 24 years old.
And today I tell myself.
That it could have been my 100%.
If I had chosen the path with the least resistance.
It could have been my 100%.
Never knowing.
That in this 135 kg body.
This kid who did not even know how to read.
All these things.
I could have become this person.
Who validated almost all the special operations training in the world.
Who beat.
Several records in the world.
And who continues to grow.
I ended up realizing.
That I left so much on the table.
I left so much on the table.
Never knowing.
That inside this obese guy.
Was this person.
And once you remove this crust.
That you peel its layers.
That you go deeper into yourself.
You find a whole new world.
People think I'm crazy.
Because I found a whole new way of living.
I think they are crazy.
Because they never tried.
To go the other side.
Of what is in front of them.
So what pushes me every day.
Is to find more.
About who I am.
So what I would suggest to a person.
Who would like to break this habit.
To constantly find excuses.
And.
Every day.
Something that sucks.
There is a saying.
And this saying says to bet everything on his strong points.
Betting everything on your strengths.
Brings you one thing.
It brings you a lot of comfort.
It makes you very strong.
To what you are already strong.
And that's why people find excuses.
It's because it's the world they live in.
They live in this world where.
If they are good at running.
All they do is run.
All they do is read books.
So if this world of excuses appears.
It's because the universe.
Life.
Does not really care about what you are good at.
It will put tests in front of you.
So when a test appears.
And you are not ready for that.
The first thing that this mentality of betting everything on his strengths does for you is that.
It pushes you to say.
That you are not good at it.
And so you will not do it.
Versus.
Say.
So I'm going to excel at that.
I'm going to do what it takes to understand.
I'm going to do the job.
And that's how you start.
Reinforce your mind.
The excuses we give ourselves are born.
Because we think we are not good at it.
And it gives us this feeling of insecurity.
And encourages us to throw the sponge.
That's why I tell everyone.
That we can not arrange anything in life.
As long as we do not know how to arrange ourselves.
A lot of people here give good.
Very good.
Who have already given you good advice.
They are there.
They give you the best advice on planet earth.
But their life is completely pathetic.
Nobody dares to look inside.
Because they know that what is there is disgusting.
It's disgusting.
It's full of lies.
It's full of secrets.
It's full of insecurity.
But once you've dived in there.
You have no more excuses.
Because you start to tear these layers of insecurity.
You know.
You know who you really are.
So do something that you fear every day.
Get out of your comfort zone every day.
Work on your weaknesses.
Not your strengths.
This is how you will grow.
This is how you will stop finding excuses.
In life, many people are theorists.
Theorists are people who ...
It could be this guy in his corner.
Who spends his days at the library.
And this guy is a master of the mind.
This guy is a great scientist.
He understood everything in mind as a theorist.
He read about the way the brain is supposed to work.
This is a theorist.
He has all the theories.
About the way things have to be done.
But you, you want to be a practitioner.
Many people who study theories.
Put these invisible barriers in their minds.
On what we can and can not accomplish as humans.
These are theorists.
Now a practitioner.
Will listen to a man like a theorist.
And will give him wrong.
Never be a theorist.
Be a practitioner.
Be this guy who goes to the field.
And who does the work.
Send yourself in these situations.
When I went through the week of hell.
I could see what my mind was really capable of.
A week of hell is 130 hours.
At the hour 48 or 72.
Your mind is completely tied.
You do not understand what is happening to you.
A theorist would tell me.
What he thinks.
What is going to happen.
A practitioner.
Dives into suffering.
And while he suffers.
It is while he suffers.
That he writes his book.
It is very easy.
To write a book.
When you are in a beautiful bookstore.
Heated to 22 degrees.
To turn pages.
The practitioner writes his book.
When he is in hell.
While he is suffering.
When he is immersed in this water at 10 degrees.
That everyone abandons.
It is like that.
That you will really begin to understand.
What the mind and the body are really capable of.
Do not read books on the subject.
Do not read what another man has written.
Send yourself into this environment.
And see how you start to talk to yourself.
In the worst situations.
And this is how we begin to develop.
A real dialogue with yourself.
That we begin to develop.
Real tools.
To go through these difficult moments.
You must be ready to suffer.
To get to the other side.
And on the other side of suffering.
There is a world.
Whose most people do not even suspect the existence.
Thank you for watching.
