Hey everybody and welcome to Animal Planet videos.
In this video, we will discover the top 10 most dangerous insects.
Make sure to watch until number 1 because it's one of the most dangerous insects in
the world.
Let's get right into it.
10.
Lonomia albica caterpillar This dangerous insect is found in the fall
months throughout Central and South America, appearing commonly in Brazil, Costa Rica,
Mexico, and other countries.
Caterpillars will eat the leaves of many different plants during their larval stage.
The adult form of this insect lays eggs on trees and is very dangerous.
Their poison is strong enough to kill a dog, horse, or human.
The poison from one of these caterpillars is among the deadliest in the world.
It can kill an entire herd of horses that graze on the leaves.
These insects are covered in poisonous spines that cause hemorrhaging of the skin, and bites
of the caterpillars can cause hemorrhaging of internal organs.
They kill about 10,000 people a year in Brazil alone.
No medicine can neutralize the poison from these caterpillars.
The best thing to do if you encounter one of them is to run as fast as you can and,
if bitten, take anti-allergy medications such as Benadryl to keep yourself alive until you
get medical attention.
9.
Hymeniopimicus argiraffica This deadly insect is a parasitoid wasp that
preys upon dangerous spiders of the genus Placiometa.
They live in Costa Rica, where it is known by the locals as the killer wasp.
They are also known to parasitize harmless spiders, which leads some people to think
they are even more dangerous.
The most dangerous thing about this insect is that its venom causes paralysis, similar
to that of spiders or scorpions.
This venom is mainly used by the female wasps to paralyze their host during their later
stages of embryonic development.
The female deadly lands on the web of her spider victim and taps on it with her legs
until she feels vibrations from movement in return, then injects her venom into the
spider's body.
Then she lays an egg on its abdomen, and when the egg hatches, the larvae burrow their way
inside, eating the still-living spider from the inside out.
When they emerge from their cocoons as dangerous adult wasps, they will have eaten all of the
insides of their host spider.
8.
German Yellowjacket German Yellowjackets are considered one of
the most dangerous insects in the world.
They live in the United States, Mexico, and South America, and their diet is based on
insects and honey.
These dangerous insects are very aggressive and release an acidic substance when they
bite which can cause blisters.
Though most people don't get bitten because these little insects are very timid around
humans.
They are dangerous because they tend to sting repeatedly.
One sting can be enough to kill some smaller creatures like honeybees.
However, people should still be aware because multiple bites, especially children of those
with allergies, can be fatal.
They are from the family of Vespidae, and live in colonies with an average size of 500
to 3,000 individuals.
However, there are cases where nests have grown as big as 30,000 insects.
They don't sting unless they feel threatened, and can be more aggressive in warm weather
like summer or autumn.
If you're a gardener who works around Yellowjacket nests, it's best to wear protective gear
and insect repellent.
7.
Fire Ants
Fire ants are very aggressive little creatures that attack in mass, which makes them especially
dangerous insects.
Just one fire ant will quickly jump onto the victim, then other nearby ants join in until
the victim is covered in hundreds of ants all biting at the same time.
The little ants inject a stinging pheromone into their victims that cause other members
of the colony to attack the victim.
So even if you brush off one ant, more will come.
Apart from their aggressivity, they are also very dangerous since they can cause allergic
reactions in some people.
They were originally from Brazil, but they have spread as far as the southern United
States where there are now very large fire ant colonies.
Fire ants like warm climates, but they can also invade homes in the winter when it's
warmer inside than outside.
Fire ants are also very easy to identify.
If you see little brown reddish ants, each about 1 sixteenth of an inch long, you can
be sure it's a fire ant.
6.
Desert locust The desert locust is a type of grasshopper
that forms swarms sometimes covering large areas in clouds of millions and even billions
of individuals.
And they are found throughout the Middle East, Africa, India, Pakistan, and China.
They are extremely dangerous and can travel long distances and devastate plants and crops
as they move along.
An adult locust eats their weight in food every single day.
Swarming behavior has been shown to have developed as a defense against predators because it
enables the insects to confuse and escape them.
There are two main types of swarms, a solitary phase and a gregarious phase.
In the solitary phase, they are smaller in number and have greenish brown wings, while
in the gregarious phase, they are much larger in number and have blackish wings.
These insects normally feed on plants, but during a swarm, they can also feed on carrion
and even other locusts.
The desert locust is considered to be one of the most dangerous insects in the world
due to their ability to swarm and devastate crops and vegetation wherever they travel.
They can fly long distances and because of this, they can travel from one country to
another almost undetected.
5.
Deathstalker Scorpion
The Deathstalker Scorpion, also known as Lyris quinquestriatus, is the most dangerous scorpion
in the world.
They live in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, and they are dangerous because
they can cause paralysis in humans and even death.
It normally would not kill a healthy adult human.
However, young children, the elderly, or sick people, such as those with a heart condition
and those who are allergic, are at much greater risk.
The deadliest part of this animal is its large, powerful claws which deliver a full-force
punch at a speed of over 100 miles per hour.
The Deathstalker has been known to deliver over 100 strikes in a single minute.
The Deathstalker's venom is considered to be among the most powerful in the world.
It's extremely toxic and may cause severe pain, blurred vision, convulsions, and breathing
problems.
Symptoms usually appear within 20 to 30 minutes after being bitten.
The symptoms usually last for up to 24 hours, which in some cases may last for several days.
Only a small amount is needed for it to be lethal.
4.
Black Widow Spider
The Black Widow Spider is a shiny black color with a distinctive red hourglass figure on
its abdomen.
Females can be up to half an inch in diameter.
The male is much smaller, measuring just one-fourth of an inch.
This dangerous spider is found in the United States, primarily in the South and West.
The small but deadly creatures prefer dark, secluded areas near or inside human dwellings,
often hiding in woodpiles or inside boxes.
They eat insects and sometimes even other spiders, but they prefer to eat insects.
The venom of the Black Widow Spider is 15 times as potent as a rattlesnake and can cause
muscle aches, vision problems, and breathing issues.
Despite that, they are not aggressive creatures and will only bite humans when threatened
or provoked.
Though the Black Widow's venom is toxic to humans, its bite usually causes no more
than temporary pain that can be treated with mild to moderate discomfort.
So it's not generally life-threatening unless the victim is very young, very old, or has
a compromised immune system.
3.
Kissing Bugs
They sound kind of cute and cuddly, but they are anything but.
It's been said that kissing bugs may be the most dangerous insects on Earth.
They feed on human and animal blood.
They typically bite around the mouth and eyes at night, hence their name.
Most people who are bitten by kissing bugs don't even realize it.
Their bite normally goes unnoticed because the wound can be as small as a pinhole.
Kissing bugs can be found in Central and South America, particularly Mexico, Brazil, Colombia,
and Venezuela.
While it may be a cute name, kissing bugs are anything but affectionate.
The saliva of the bug can cause Chagas disease, which is fatal in about 30% of untreated cases.
The disease is caused by parasites that are transmitted via the saliva of kissing bugs.
For the unaware victims, the kiss of death comes when they go to sleep after being bit
by a bug that fed on their blood.
While sleeping, the kissing bug defecates right next to the bite wound.
If you awaken with a bug dropping on your face, don't be tempted to go after the insect.
They are fast and quite sneaky.
This dangerous insect is active during the day and particularly aggressive, so if you
see one, it may be a good idea to get out of its way.
If injured or provoked, these dangerous insects will attack and can kill honeybees and other
types of bees by injecting them with a powerful venom that destroys their nervous system.
Their active time is from April until November, but September and October are when they are
most dangerous due to their increasing aggressiveness as they head into hibernation for the winter
months.
They are dangerous because they can sting multiple times.
Some people have even died after being stung by this insect.
Their nests can be found in high up places like trees and cliffs, as well as the exterior
walls of buildings.
The Asian Giant Hornet is the size of a human thumb and has a wingspan of about 5 inches.
Their average lifespan is 3 years and they can reach speeds up to 25 miles per hour as
they fly from flower to flower in search of nectar.
When they feel threatened, these dangerous insects will release a pheromone, which sends
other dangerous insects to attack the threat.
The Bullet Ant is a very dangerous insect found in South America.
It gets its name for the severe pain it causes when biting or stinging, similar to being
shot with a bullet.
The pain has been described as excruciating and lasts about 24 hours after the attack.
Victims often report trembling and shaking during this period.
Some comparisons have been made between the side effects of bites from these ants and
those experienced by morphine addicts, which might provide some indication of how dangerous
they are.
What makes them so dangerous?
Well, despite their small size, 2-3 centimeters, the Bullet Ant is the only species of ant
that delivers a sting, which is considered to be among the most painful insect stings
in the world.
The sting causes severe, excruciating pain that can last several minutes or hours and
can sometimes be accompanied by extreme hypertension.
The sting feels like a burning and throbbing sensation, which is believed to be even more
painful than the sting of most bees.
