Unlucky bird and lucky child.
In a small town, not far from the place where I live,
there once lived a young man who was struck by all kinds of misfortune.
His father was called Unlucky Bird.
And so he was also called Unlucky Bird.
Both parents died early.
And the long-haired aunt who took him in at the time
beat him every time she came out of the fair.
But since she went to the fair every day,
she also beat him every day.
But he was also really very unlucky.
Because when he carried a glass, it usually fell to him.
And when he then cried tears, he always cut himself in the fingers.
That's how it went in all things.
Although the long aunt died one day
and he planted so many bushes and trees around her grave
as if he wanted to pull all the sticks on him again
that she had smashed on his back.
But his misfortune seemed to increase more and more every year.
Then his great sadness took over
and he decided to go into the wide world.
It can't get any worse, he thought.
Maybe it will get better.
He therefore put all his fortune in his pocket
and walked out to the gate.
In front of the gate, on the stony bridge,
he stopped again and leaned over the railing.
He looked down into the waves,
which raced past the pillars
and it was even painful for him.
It was almost as if it were an accident
to leave the city where he had lived for so long.
And maybe he would have stood for a long time
if the wind hadn't suddenly blown his hat off
and thrown it into the river.
Then he awoke from his dreams.
But the hat had already swum under the bridge
and danced on the other side in the middle of the current.
And every time a wave lifted him up,
he seemed to call back,
Goodbye, bad luck bird, I'm leaving.
Stay at home if you feel like it.
So the bad luck bird set off without a hat.
Funny companions often sang enough
and jubilated him.
And Luinin agreed to go hiking with them.
But he shook his head sadly every time
and said,
I don't belong to you
and I wouldn't bring you much luck.
Besides, my name is bad luck bird.
As soon as they heard this name,
the funny boys became serious and down-to-earth
and hurried out of the dust.
In the evening he reached a inn
and sat at a lonely corner of the table
with his head in his hand
and in front of him the sparkling jug of wine,
which was about to run out.
So Luinin quietly approached him,
tapped him on the shoulder
so that he turned around in shock
and asked why he was so sad.
But when he told his story
or even called his name,
she shook her head,
went back to her spinning wheel
and left him sitting alone
After bad luck bird had been hiking for several weeks
without really knowing where to go,
one day he came to a wonderful large garden
which was surrounded by a high, gilded railing.
Through the railing,
ancient trees and low bushes
alternately with large lawns.
In between there was a brook
over which a lot of small bridges led.
Tender deer and deer
walked around on the yellow sand paths,
came up to the railing,
stretched their heads out
and fed him the bread from their hands.
In the middle of the garden, however,
one could see a stately castle from the trees.
The silver roofs shone in the sun
and colorful flags and banners waved from the towers.
He walked along the railing.
Finally he found a large, open gateway
from which a long, shady alley
led straight around the castle.
In the garden itself, everything was quiet.
No one could be seen or heard.
There was a board hanging on the gate.
Aha, he thought, how usual.
When you pass a really beautiful garden
where the gates are open,
there is always a board hanging next to it
which says that entry is forbidden.
To his surprise, however,
he was disappointed this time,
because there was nothing on the board
but
that you are not allowed to cry here.
So-so, he said,
a nerdy inscription.
He pulled out the handkerchief
and rubbed his eyes a little,
because he was not quite sure
if there was not still half a tear
sitting in one corner somewhere.
Then he entered the garden.
The large, wide path,
which led straight to the castle,
made him confused.
He preferred to take a side path
in the middle between
Hohen Jasmin and Rosenhecken.
He followed it
and reached a small forest
from which a path with many turns
led up to a hill.
When he now turned to one corner,
the tip of the hill lay in front of him,
and on the hill in the grass
sat a beautiful girl.
She had a golden crown on her lap,
which she took immediately while she was diving.
Then she took her silk shirt,
rubbed the crown with it,
and when she saw that she had become completely pale again,
she clapped her hands with joy,
brushed her long hair behind her ears
and put the crown back on.
The poor, unlucky bird
was overwhelmed by a special fear in her eyes.
His heart pounded so loudly
as if it wanted to burst.
He stepped behind a bush
but it was a beaver crack,
and a branch lay straight across his face.
And as the wind quietly moved the bush back and forth,
a thorn tickled him
around the tip of his nose,
so that he had to sneeze loudly.
Frightened, the girl turned around with the crown
and saw the unlucky bird cower behind the bush.
Why are you hiding?
she called.
Do you want to do something bad to me
or are you afraid of me?
The unlucky bird trembled like aspen leaves
behind the bush.
You are not doing anything to me,
she said laughingly.
Come here, sit a little closer to me.
My playmates all ran away
and left me alone.
You can tell me something pretty,
but what about laughing, you hear?
But you look so sad.
What's wrong with you?
If you don't make such a gloomy face,
you will really be a very pretty person.
If you want it,
replied the unlucky bird,
I would like to sit with you for a moment.
But who are you?
I have never seen anything as beautiful
and glorious as you in my life.
I am the princess Glückskind,
and this is my father's garden.
What are you doing here alone?
I feed my deer and deer antlers
and clean my crown.
And afterwards?
Then I feed my goldfish.
And when you're done with that?
Then my playmates come back
and then we laugh and sing and dance.
Oh, what a happy life you lead.
And that happens every day?
Yes, every day.
But now tell me who you are
and what your name is.
Oh, most beautiful princess,
don't ask me for that.
I am the most unhappy person under the sun
and have the ugliest name.
Pfui, she said,
an ugly name is very ugly.
In my father's country there is one
who is called Entengrütze
and another who is called Fettfleck.
You won't be called that, will you?
No, he answered,
I don't call Entengrütze,
nor Fettfleck.
My name is much uglier.
My name is unlucky bird.
Unlucky bird?
That's ridiculous.
Can't you get another name?
Listen, I want to come up with
a pretty name for you
and then I want to ask my father
to allow you to wear it.
My father can do whatever he wants
because he is king.
But only on one condition
that you make a very happy face.
Take your hand off your face.
You don't always have to
poke around your nose.
You have a very pretty nose
and you will still spoil it.
Brush your hair off your forehead.
So, now you still look
reasonably sensible.
Tell me,
why are you so sad?
Because I am always happy
and everyone I talk to is happy.
Only you don't look like that.
Why am I so sad?
Because I was sad my whole life
and always had bad luck.
And you are always funny?
How did you get that?
A fairy kept me
over the holy baptism.
My father used to give him
a big service.
She took me in her arms,
kissed me on the forehead
and said to me,
you should always be happy
and make everyone happy.
When I see a really sad person,
I should forget his misfortune.
You should be called a lucky child.
No, no,
he said, I hate you, never.
The princess became
very quiet and thoughtful.
She looked at him with her big blue eyes
in such a way that
his back froze cold.
Then she lifted him up again.
Does it always have to be
a fairy?
A princess is also something.
Come here, kneel down,
because you are too tall for me.
Then she stood in front of him,
gave him a kiss
and walked away laughing.
Before the unlucky bird could
really think,
she was gone.
He slowly stood up.
It was as if he had woken up
from a dream.
And yet he felt that it could not be a dream,
because a wonderful happiness
had come over his heart.
If only I had my hat.
He said that I could throw him in the air.
Maybe he started to tremble
and said to me,
I really think I'm funny.
That would be too strange.
He picked up
a large bouquet in the garden
and walked along the country road
singing.
As soon as he came to the next town,
he bought a red velvet wreath
with atlas slits
and a beret with a long white feather.
He looked in the mirror and said,
unlucky bird,
we still want to see
if I don't get another name.
But the most beautiful one there is,
otherwise I won't accept it.
Then he got on a horse,
gave him the traces that it danced funny
and continued his journey.
Princess Lucky Child,
however, after she had given
the unlucky bird the kiss,
ran and ran.
Then she walked slower and slower
and finally she sat down
on a bench not far from the castle
and began to cry bitterly.
When her playmates returned
and found her,
she was still crying.
They tried to comfort her,
but it didn't help.
Then they ran in their fear of the king
and shouted, for God's sake,
a misfortune for the whole country.
Princess Lucky Child is sitting in the garden
and crying and no one can help her.
When the king heard this,
he became terrified
and hurriedly jumped down the stairs
into the garden.
The princess was crying on the bench
and had the crown on her lap.
And so many tears had fallen on her,
that she was shining in the sun
as if she had a thousand diamonds.
The king took his daughter in his arms
and comforted her
and talked to her,
but she kept crying.
He led her to the castle
and let her from all over the country
everything that was beautiful and precious
come.
But she remained sad.
He asked her to tell him
what a heavy heartache she had experienced.
She did not answer.
But the king kept asking
and finally she had to tell him.
And she told him
that she was sitting in the garden
and how a young man had come
who looked so sad
and how she had kissed him
to see if he might not be
a little happier.
Then the king slapped his hands
on his head.
And he kissed him.
And when the king heard this,
he came forward with his arms crossed
and said,
So you are the man
who had the audacity
to be kissed by the princess?
Yes, my king,
and I have since become
the happiest man in the world.
Throw him into the tower,
he shall be beheaded tomorrow.
Then the riders led
Pechvogel out and into the tower.
The king, however,
knew that it was a terrible act.
He said, I will have him,
and he will be beheaded,
but alone my happiness
will not be funny again.
Then he quietly went to the room
of his daughter,
saw through the keyhole,
shook his head,
went up and down again for a long time
and finally let his secret advice come.
When he had heard all this,
he sat down and said,
I don't know if it helps,
but the fact that he was sad and now funny
is certain.
It is also true that our beautiful princess
used to be always happy and now
weeps bitterly.
It is very likely that the kiss
is to blame.
So Pechvogel must give the princess
the kiss back.
Majesty, this is my most unscrupulous
opinion.
That is quite impossible,
the king replied angrily
and completely against the sense of my house.
I don't know why,
and no one can do anything about it.
The king thought about
the matter a little more,
then he said,
well, we want to try it.
Call all count and knights to the throne room
and let the prisoners lead up here.
Then the king put on his state clothes
and took a seat on the throne.
Next to him was the princess,
whom he had not dared to say
why she had been summoned,
and around him in a big circle
stood the whole court,
full of gentlemen in gold-plated clothes
with stars and shards.
Everything was very quiet.
Then the door opened
and Pechvogel was brought in.
You will be beheaded tomorrow,
the king said,
but before that you will instantly
and in front of all these noble and
graceful gentlemen, my daughter,
give back the kiss she gave you
without thinking.
If the king wishes that,
said Pechvogel,
I would be happy to do it.
And if it is possible that a person
can become even happier than I am now,
I will make sure of it.
We'll see about that first.
And the king's perch interrupted him.
This time you could have miscalculated.
Then Pechvogel stepped up
to the princess,
hugged her and gave her a kiss.
She took his hand,
looked at him very kindly
and both stood in front of the throne.
Are you happy now,
my dear daughter,
the king asked.
A little bit, father,
she answered,
but it won't last long.
Yes, yes,
the king said sadly.
I can see it.
He didn't become sad again,
as it should be if it were right.
He's still standing there smiling
and still making that shamelessly happy face.
What to do now?
The princess looked down
and said quietly,
I know it, father,
and I want to tell you,
but only in my ear.
Then the king and the princess
went to the hall
and when they came back in,
he took Pechvogel's hand,
put it in the princess's
and said to all the gathered
gentlemen and counts,
it cannot be changed.
God's will be done.
And Pechvogel became prince
and later king.
He lived in the golden castle
and gave the princess so many kisses
that she became even happier
than before.
Princess Glückskinder, however,
gave him the most beautiful
names for his ugly name.
Every day a different one.
Just for a while,
when she was quite overbearingly funny,
she said to him,
Do you remember what you used to be called?
But he kept his mouth shut.
What will people think
when they hear it?
I lose all respect.
