Hey everyone, my name is Greg and today's video is all about getting you started with serving in table tennis
So today I want to start simple and show you three serves that I think are great to start out with to get your timing
Down and start building some confidence with serves. So starting from our shake hand grip position
We are instead going to switch to a pinch grip for our serves
Slide your hand down towards the racket and put your thumb on the front of the rubber and your fingers on the back
If it's more comfortable you can roll all your fingers up on the back and keep one finger
to pinch with your thumb once you're in the pinch grip you will see that you can move your wrist in a wider arc and
Having this ability will let you generate more spin when brushing the ball on your serves
Okay, we're ready to get started with serves
The first one I want to show you is a topspin pendulum serve when doing the serve
we're going to be generating topspin on the ball that's when the ball is spinning towards your opponent and
Topspin when it bounces on your opponent's side of the table will actually cause a kick and the ball will jump
Faster and stay lower and your opponent has to handle that for the serve
We're going to get in our starting position and you will toss the ball up in the air and while the ball is up you
will bring your hand back and
While the ball is coming down
You will bring your hand forward and you want to connect with the ball when your hand is coming up
To brush the back of the ball if it brushes up
That will cause the ball to spin towards your opponent and bounce with topspin
Okay, so the next serve I want to cover is a pendulum backspin serve
Backspin is when the ball is spinning back towards you and it causes a hit the brakes effect
So if there's backspin on the ball and it hits the table
It's going to not bounce as far and it's going to slow down
So it won't jump across the table
It will want to kind of hit the brakes and stay closer to you when performing the backspin pendulum serve
It'll be very similar to the topspin with slight difference
We're going to toss the ball up in the air bring our arm back and instead of connecting and brushing on the back of the ball
We are instead going to open our racket slightly keep it flat and we are going to brush
Under the ball and finish on the other side
When doing the backspin serve really try to make contact with the ball with the top half of your racket
That's the point at which your racket is traveling the fastest and you'll really feel a difference in how much backspin is generated
Okay, the last serve I want to cover is a deadspin pendulum serve. What's a deadspin?
Deadspin is where the ball has neither topspin or backspin on the ball
Instead you're trying to get the ball to bounce across with no spin for our deadspin serve
We're actually going to try to get just the slightest amount of backspin on the ball to get that little bit of backspin
We're also going to be moving down when we hit the ball
So we will be going up back and then connecting with the ball down right here
Okay, that's my advice. I'm getting started with serves and table tennis. So go find yourself a container
Load it up with balls and get to practicing at a table. If you want to see more of my videos subscribe to the channel
Thanks again, and I'll see you all later
