The newly translated Pyramid Texts, 2023. A quick note before reading. The Pyramid Texts,
they were found in the last royal pyramid of the 5th and those of the 6th dynasties,
constitute the oldest collection of Egyptian religious and mythological texts,
consisting of mortuary rituals that had developed over centuries.
The general theme of these texts is the burial and rebirth of the deceased king,
and the texts themselves are rich in the varied mythological traditions of the old kingdom.
The texts were constructed from a number of originally separate mythological strains
and were used during and after the burial rituals of the king.
Although the Pyramid Texts were not intended to be a systematic exposition of Egyptian myth
and theology, they can nevertheless serve as a basis for the reconstruction of old
kingdom religious thought. A careful study of these texts will reveal the ingenuous manner
in which the Egyptian myth-makers were able to combine religious speculation
and the royal political ideology that had developed around the kingship.
There are many references and expressions in the Pyramid Texts that make little sense to
the modern reader, but their mystery can, to an extent, be overcome by realising the
symbolic value of such mythic expressions. Despite the obscurity of some passages,
the religious and poetic genius of many of these texts is very much in evidence.
The oldest selection of texts, those from the Pyramid of Eunice, may be found their
original terminology rather than translate them into English terms, which may not render
their exact meaning. Finally, in several passages, I have preferred a slightly freer translation
in order to produce a smoother English rendition. To be honest, I am rather proud of this translation.
I feel like a real hero for doing so. Pardon me for blowing my own trumpet.
If you think I am arrogant for doing so after hearing the following translations,
leave a comment, tell me why, and I will promise to answer every single comment on the video.
Utterance 214. A spell for ascension to Orion.
Eunice, take heed of the lake. These words are to be spoken four times.
The messengers of your Ka have come for you. The messengers of your father have come for you,
and the messengers of Ri have come for you. Follow behind your back so that you may purify
yourself. Your bones are the divine falcons and the Uri which are in the sky. You will abide by
the side of God. You will entrust your house to your son, whom you have begotten. As for anyone
who speaks evil against the name of Eunice when you go out, Geb will degrade him to the lowest
place in his city. He will retreat and be weary, but you will purify yourself in the celestial
waters. You shall come down upon the bands of bronze on the arms of Horus in his name of
he who is in the Henubach. All humankind shall acclaim you, for the stars which know not
destruction have exalted you. Get yourself up to the place where your father abides,
to the place where Geb abides, and he will give you the Uri which is on the brow of Horus.
Through it, you will become an Ak. Through it, you will become mighty. Through it, you will be
preeminent among the Westerners. Do this, and we shall live among the stars once more.
Utterance 217. Ascending to Riatum Oriatum, this Unas has come to you as an Ak who knows not
destruction. As lord of the destiny of the ends of the earth, your son has come to you. This Unas
has come to you. You will travel through the forest, united in the darkness, and you will
rise on the horizon, in the place where you are radiant. O Seth and Nephthys, go and declare to
the gods of Upper Egypt and their coup. Behold, this Unas comes indeed as a spirit who knows not
destruction. Should he will that you die, then die you shall. Should he will that you live,
then live you shall. O Riatum, this Unas has come to you as an Ak who knows not destruction.
As lord of the destiny of the ends of the earth, your son has come to you. This Unas has come to
you. You will travel through the forest, united in the darkness, and you will rise on the horizon,
in the place where you are radiant. O Osiris and Isis, go and declare to the gods of Lower Egypt
and their Aku. Behold, this Unas has indeed come as a spirit who knows not destruction.
Praiseworthy is he, lord of the Nile. Praise him, O spirits who are in the waters. Whomever he wills
to live, he indeed shall live. Whomever he wills to die, he indeed shall die. O Riatum, this Unas
has come to you as an Ak who knows not destruction. As lord of the destiny of the ends of the earth,
your son has come to you. This Unas has come to you. You will travel through the forest,
united in the darkness, and you will rise on the horizon, in the place where you are radiant.
O Thoth, go and declare to the western gods and their Aku. Behold, this Unas has come as an Ak
who knows not destruction. One was adorned as Anubis around his neck, ruler of the western
heights. He will try the hearts, for he is powerful over the hearts. Whoever wills to live,
he indeed shall live. Whomever he wills to die, he indeed shall die. O Riatum, this Unas has come to
you as an Ak who knows not destruction. As lord of the destiny of the ends of the earth, your son
has come to you. This Unas has come to you. You will travel through the forest, united in the
darkness, and you will rise on the horizon, in the place where you are radiant. O Horus, go and
declare to the eastern Ba'al and their Aku. Behold, this Unas has come as an Ak who knows not destruction.
Whoever he wills to live, he indeed shall live. Whomever he wills to die, he indeed shall die.
O Riatum, your son has come to you. Unas has come to you. Cause him to ascend to you and clasp him
to yourself in your embrace, for he is your son, the son of your body unto eternity.
Utterance 364. A spell for resurrection. Hail, Osiris Teti. Stand up now. Horus has come to
install you among the gods. Horus has set his love on you and has provided for you. Horus has fastened
his eye to you. Horus has opened your eyes to something you might see with it. The gods have
raised your face for you, for they have set their love on you. Isis and Nephthys have restored your
strength, and Horus is not distant from you, for you are his car, and your sight will be delighted
by him. Make haste and take to yourself the word of Horus to be at peace through it. Hearken to
Horus. Evil will never befall you, for he has appointed the gods to attend to you. Hail, Osiris
Teti. Awake now. Geb has brought Horus to you so that he may establish you. Horus has found you and
has become an act through you. Horus has appointed the gods to approach you. He has given them to you
so that they may brighten your face. Horus has placed you at the forefront of the gods, and God
has ordained that you should claim your full supremacy. Horus has bound himself to you and
will never part from you. Horus has given you life in the name of Ongeti. Horus has given you his
mighty eye. He has given it to you that you may be powerful and that all your enemies may fear you.
Horus has made you complete and whole with his eye in this name of divine offering. Horus has
taken the gods captive on your behalf, and they will not hear from you in the place where you
have gone. Horus has assembled the gods for you, and they will not hear from you in the place where
you drowned. Nephthys has united for you all your limbs. In this, her name is Seshat, mistress of
builders. She has restored them for you, so that you are given to your mother Nut in her name of
Sarcophagus. Nut has embraced you in her name of Sarcophagus, and you have been carried to her in
her name, Tomb. Horus has united your limbs for you, and he will not permit you to decay. He has
assembled you, and there will be no disorder within you. Horus has established you. Do not falter.
Hail, Osiris-Teti. Raise your heart. Be justly proud. Open your mouth. Horus has protected you,
and his protection of you will not fail. Hail, Osiris-Teti. You are a powerful god, and there is
no god like you. Horus has given you his children, so that they may raise you on high. He has given
to you all the gods, that they may attend you, and that you may rule over them. Horus has carried
you in his name, Hanubar, and he will exalt you in your name of Sokar. You shall live and travel
every day. You shall become an Ach in your name of Horizon, from which re-proceeds. You shall be
honored. You shall be mighty. You shall be a Bar. You shall be powerful unto ages of ages.
Utterance 412. A Spell for Resurrection. The Great One has fallen upon his side.
He who is of Nedet trembled, but his head has been raised up by Re. He despises sleep and scorns
language. O flesh of Teti, do not rot, do not putrefy, and do not smell foul. Your foot will
not go astray, your movements will not wander, and you will not tread upon the decay of Osiris.
You shall approach the sky like Orion, and your baby will be watchful like Sothis. You shall be
a Bar, for you are a Bar. You shall be honored, for you are honored. Your Bar shall stand amidst
the gods as Horus of Eru. Let awe for you well up in the hearts of the gods, like unto the ninth
crown on the head of the king of lower Egypt, like unto the crown of upper Egypt upon the head of
her king, like unto the braids on the heads of the Bedouin. You shall hold fast to the hands of the
stars, which know not destruction. Your bones will never perish, and your flesh will never decay.
O Teti, your limbs will not be far from you, for you are indeed one of the gods.
Pea sails southward to you, and Depp sails northward to you. The ritual mourner wails for you,
offering priests who are robed for you. Come in peace, is said to you, O Teti, by your father.
Come in peace, is said to you by Re. The portals of heaven open to you, and the gates of the Duat
unfold to you, for you have descended as the jackal of upper Egypt, even as Anubis reclines upon his
stomach, even as Wepiu, who is at the head of On. The great maiden who is at On has laid her hands
upon you, for you have no human mother to bear you, you have no human father to beget you. Your mother
is the great wild cow of Necheb. She wears a white royal headcloth, she who wears the lofty
plumes, she who is pendulous of breasts, she will nurse you and never wean you. Bestir yourself on
your left side, place yourself on your right side. Your thrones among the gods are established,
and Re supports you with his shoulder. Your odour is their odour, your sweat is the sweat of the
two Aeneids. You will appear in the royal headdress, your hand clutching the scepter,
and you first grasp the mace. Stand at the forefront of the conclaves of upper and lower
Egypt. Arbitrate between the gods, for you are among those who surround Re, those who are before
the morning star. You will be born in your months as the moon. Re will support you on the horizon,
and the stars, which know not destruction, will attend to you. Prepare yourself for the coming of
Re, so that you may be pure when you go forth to Re. The heavens will not be without you until
eternity. Utterance 422. Transformation into an Ake-a. Hail Pepi! Go forth, that you may become
an Ake-a, that you may be mighty as a god, successor to Osiris. You have your body within
you, you have your power around you, you have your crown of lower Egypt upon your head, you have
your crown of upper Egypt upon your shoulder. Your face is forward, and adoration for you precedes
you. The followers of the god are behind you, the nobles of god precede you. Proclaiming,
the god has come, the god has come, this Pepi has come upon the throne of Osiris,
this Ak has come, he who is in Nedit, he who is mighty in the gnome of Obedos. Isis greets you,
and Nephthys cries out to you. The Aku approach you and prostrate themselves. They kiss the earth
before your feet. Because of fear of you, O Pepi, in the cities of Seir, go forth into the presence
of your mother, Nut, that she may grasp your hand, she may show you the road to the horizon,
to the place where Re is. The portals of heaven unfold for you, the portals of the sky give way
before you. There you will find Re standing and waiting for you, he will grasp your hand for you,
he will lead you to the two conclaves of heaven, he will secure you on the throne of Osiris.
Hail Pepi. The eye of Horus has come to you so that it may speak for you. Your Ba, which is
among the gods, has come to you. Your Pa, which is among the Aku, has come to you. The sun has
protected the father, Horus has protected Osiris, and Horus has protected this Pepi from the hands
of his enemies. You shall stand firm, O Pepi, protected and equipped as a god, endowed with
the essence of Osiris, on the throne of Kenti Imentiu. You will do what he was wont to do
among the Aku, the stars that know not destruction. Your son will ascend your throne, endowed with
your essence, and will do what you were wont to do at the head of the living in accordance with
the command of Re, the great god. He will cultivate barley, he will cultivate Emma,
and he will offer them to you. Hail Pepi. Re has given you complete dominion and life for all time.
You will lay claim to your own, for you have taken the essence of a god. You will be great in the
West Fourteen with the gods who are at the head of the lake. Hail Pepi. Your Ba will stand among
the gods, among the Aku, for fear of you is upon their hearts. Hail Pepi. Ascend, O Pepi, to your
throne at the head of the living, for the terror of you is upon their hearts. Your name shall live
on earth, your name shall be eternal on earth, you shall never perish, neither shall you be
destroyed unto the ages of ages. Utterance. 473. Crossing the river of heaven. The ferries of
heaven have been launched by the day bark for Re, so that Re may travel on them to Herakti,
seventeen on the horizon. The ferries of heaven have been launched by the night bark for Herakti,
so that Herakti may travel on them to Re on the horizon. The ferries of heaven have been brought
down to Pepi by the day bark, so that Pepi may go forth on them to Re on the horizon.
The ferries of heaven have been brought down to Pepi by the night bark, so that Pepi may go forth
on them to Herakti on the horizon. Pepi will go forth on the east side of heaven, where the gods
are born, and Pepi will be born as Horus, as he of the horizon. Pepi is justified, and the chi of
Pepi is justified, so this is the sister of Pepi, and the morning star is the child of Pepi. Pepi
has found the Aku who is eloquent in speech. 18. Sitting on the two banks of the lake of Sese,
the drinking-place of an Ak eloquent of speech. Who are you, say they to Pepi, say the Aku
eloquent of speech. This Pepi is a gifted orator. Then how did this happen to you, say they to
Pepi, say the Aku eloquent of speech, that you have come to this place, which is more noble than
every place? Pepi has come to this place, which is more noble than any place. The ferries of heaven
have been launched by the day bark for Re, so that Re may travel on them to Herakti on the horizon.
The ferries of heaven have been launched by the night bark for Herakti, so that Herakti may travel
on them to Re on the horizon. The ferries of heaven have been brought down to Pepi by the day
barker, so that Pepi may go forth on them to Re on the horizon. The ferries of heaven have been
brought down to Pepi by the night barker, so that Pepi may go forth on them to Herakti on the horizon.
Pepi will go forth on the east side of heaven, where the gods are born, and Pepi will be born
as Horus, as he of the horizon. Pepi is justified, and the car of Pepi is justified. Give praise to
this Pepi. Give praise to the car of this Pepi. So this is the sister of Pepi, and the morning star
is the child of Pepi. This Pepi will go with you. This Pepi will stroll with you in the field of
rushes. He will moor as you moor in the field of turquoise. This Pepi will eat what you eat.
This Pepi will live on what you live on. This Pepi will be clothed with that with which you are
clothed. This Pepi will be anointed with that with which you are anointed. Pepi will receive water

Ascend to this Pepi in your name of Re, that you may banish the storm clouds of the sky until
Heracti has appeared, that he may hear his mighty deeds and his praise in the mouths of the two
Enneads. How beautiful you are, and says his mother, my heir, says Osiris. This Pepi will not
swallow the eye of Horus, lest men say he will die because of it. This Pepi will not swallow a limb
of Osiris, lest the gods say he will die because of it. This Pepi will live on the offerings of
his father, Atum, and you will protect him, O Nechbet. You have protected Pepi, O Nechbet,
within the palace of the magistrate, which is at. You have entrusted him to someone who is in his
service, so that this Pepi may be provided for. He who is in his service has entrusted this Pepi
to him who serves the litter, so that Pepi may be provided for. This Pepi has escaped his day
of submission to death, just as Seth also escaped his day of submission to death. This Pepi has
escaped his fortnights of submission to death, just as Seth also escaped his fortnights of

pillars, which support nut even as shoe, you metal bones of this Pepi, and you, his limbs, which know
not destruction. This Pepi is the star that gives light to the sky. This Pepi has ascended to God
so that it may be protected. Heaven will never be without this Pepi, and the earth will never be
without this Pepi. This Pepi will abide as a living being in your midst. O gods of the lower
heaven, you stars, which know not destruction, you who pass over the land of Libya, who support
yourselves on your jam scepters. This Pepi supports himself with you on a was scepter and a jam scepter.
Pepi is your fourth. O gods of the lower heaven, you stars, which know not destruction, you who
pass over the land of Libya, who support yourselves on your jam scepters. This Pepi supports himself

out, and he will not be eaten but will be spat out. Hear now this utterance that is spoken to you,
O Re. Your essence is in Pepi, O Re. Your essence is given life in Pepi, O Re. The baboons have
been killed by the ape, and the ape has been killed by the baboons. You, O trapper, and you,
O potent male, you who belong to the prima evil generation, you will hasten, one to unashment
and one to justification. You who were born when wrath had not yet come to be, you who were born
when disputes had not yet come to be, you who were born when conflict had not yet come to be,
you who were born when strife had not yet come to be, you were born when the eye of Horus had not
yet been injured, and when the testicles of Seth had not yet been torn away. This Pepi is the blood
that came forth from Isis. He is the blood that came forth from Nephthys. He will gird up his
loins, and there is nothing the gods can do against him. This Pepi is the successor of Re,
and this Pepi can never die. Hear, O Geb, prince of all the gods, and endow him with his nature.
Hear, O Thoth, the source of concord among the gods. Horus will open the way for him,
and Seth will be his defender. This Pepi will rise on the eastern side of Heavan, like Re,
who rises on the eastern side of Heavan. Utterancy 571. The eternal son of Atum, the mother of Pepi
has become pregnant with him, who is in lower Heavan. This Pepi has been begotten by his father
Atum. At a time when the sky had not yet come into being, when the earth had not yet come into being,
when humanity had not yet come into being, when the gods had not yet been born, when death had
not yet come into being, this Pepi will escape the day of submission to death, just as Seth
escaped his day of submission to death. This Pepi is on the road to your domain, O gods of the lower
Heavan. You who know not the assault of your enemies, and this Pepi will not know the assault
of his enemies. O you who die not at the hands of a king, this Pepi will not die at the hands of a

palace of Selkhet. Re has received this Pepi to himself in the Heavans, and this Pepi shall live,
even as he who sets in the west of the sky lives when he rises in the east of the sky.
He who is in his service has entrusted this Pepi to him who serves the litter, that he may attend
to this Pepi, for this Pepi is a star. The protection of Re is upon this Pepi, and the
protection of Re cannot be removed from this Pepi. Horus has extended his two arms to him, even to
this Pepi, that he may entrust this Pepi to Shu, who raises his arms to support the sky.
O Re, give your hand to this Pepi. O great God, give your staff to this Pepi, so that he may live
unto eternity. If you liked this reading, please give us a like. If you are feeling really
adventurous, share it. And if you think it was good, or perhaps an abomination, take them little
fingers and tinkle them on the keyboard, and leave us a comment. I promise to reply to every single
comment. And if feel you have nothing to comment about, I love listening to Aretha Franklin in the
midnight hours, my toes curl with excitement, I dream of being with her doing things. Comment on that.
