The 2020 Ford Mercedes-AMG GLE Class, with up to 603 horsepower on tap,
takes the ordinary Benz-branded GLE Class and sets it on fire.
The AMG-tuned GLE 53 and GLE 63 S, available in classic squareback and fast coupe-like body designs,
add heaps of horsepower to an already sumptuous midsize SUV.
The GLE 53 is powered by a 429-horsepower turbocharged inline-six,
while the GLE 63 S is powered by a monstrous 603-horsepower twin-turbo V8.
Both engines are mated to a 9-speed automated transmission and all-wheel drive.
Both coupe models sacrifice some cargo capacity,
but they don't detract from the GLE's comfortable ride and tech-heavy interior.
Every GLE has an electric panoramic sliding sunroof, heated front seats,
and automatic high lights as standard equipment.
The AMG-badged GLE Class has an amazing 7,700 pounds of towing potential hidden among its blend of luxe and performance,
making it capable of hauling more than just ass.
For 2024 the GLE 53 and GLE 63 S get a facelift for 2024 owing to a mid-cycle revision.
The GLE 53 receives a redesigned front bumper, giving it more attitude than the GLE 63 S.
The LED daytime running lights and taillights on both models have been updated.
Mercedes also introduces two new paint colors, Alpine Gray and Twilight Blue Metallic.
The GLE 63 S coupe now comes standard with a new 22-inch forged wheel design,
which is available on other variants.
Furthermore, Mercedes claims that the Turbo 6 has higher torque, which will allow for faster acceleration.
Pricing
We'd rather save our money and go with the more traditional and boxier GLE Class SUV.
The two free paint options are Black and Polar White,
and we'd couple the darker color with the AMG Night Package, which features blacked-out exterior trim.
The lit three-pointed star insignia is an interesting choice.
The optional heated steering wheel will keep our hands toasty,
and the Acoustic Comfort Package will assist insulate the cabin from outside sounds.
The multi-contour front chairs with massage and quick heating are also essential.
Our selections are completed by soft-closed doors and a four-zone climate system.
Every GLE Class features two massive digital monitors on the dashboard.
The interior is sportier than that of ordinary Benz models,
having sport seats with red contrasting stitching, a sport steering wheel, red seatbelts, and aluminum highlights.
Even in the back seat, the cabin is roomy.
With the SUV's square-back body shape, a third row of seats is optional.
The GLE 53 has the same cargo space as the GLE 450,
which means it can fit 11 carry-on suitcases behind the second row of seats
and up to 26 cases with the rear seats folded down.
The sloping roofline of the GLE 53 Coupe, on the other hand,
resulted in a loss of five cubic feet of storage space,
and the area contained two fewer suitcases with all seats in place and five fewer with the back row stowed.
Twin 12.3-inch infotainment displays dominate the GLE's dashboard,
and the AMG variants, like the lesser Benz-branded GLE Classes, support the current MBUX software interface.
The touchscreen, the center console-mounted controller, or just saying,
hey Mercedes, and then giving a voice command allow the driver and front seat passenger to communicate with the system.
The device is a little awkward to use, but owners should adjust after a few weeks behind the wheel.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot, are standard.
The GLE 53 comes standard with all-wheel drive and a 9-speed automatic transmission.
An electric supercharger powered by a 48-volt electrical system supplements the engine.
The GLE 53's powertrain produces 429 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque
when combined with the SUV's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine.
That configuration aided an earlier GLE 53 we tested in reaching 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and completing the quarter-mile in 13.0 seconds at 107 mph.
When compared to a Benz-branded 362 hp GLE 450 we tested, it took 5.3 seconds and 13.9 seconds at 100 mph, respectively.
The twin-turbo V8 in the GLE 63 S produces 603 hp.
The GLE 53 also has a clever suspension that combines an airbag system with active anti-roll bars
to enable corner-carving capabilities without losing ride quality.
Even on bumpy roads, the GLE 53 coupe we tested seemed smooth.
By changing the drive mode to Sport or Sport Plus, the suspension was stiffened enough to assist keep the huge family hauler steady when the pavement curled.
