A Florida mom and her 15-year-old daughter were out for an evening of fun when the safety bar on their carnival ride flew open. Anita Young says she was desperate to keep her daughter and herself from flying off the ride so she used all of her strength to hold down the bar. When the ride finally stopped, she confronted the operator. Young and her daughter were later shocked to learn an inspection report of the ride had found a “restraint bar latch broken.” Inside Edition’s Jim Moret has more.
Terror on a thrill ride. This mom and daughter were out at a fair in Margate, Florida
when a ride called the Hurricane caught their eye.
But as they were spinning at high speed, disaster, when they say the safety bar holding them in place, flew open.
I'm holding it!
Shaky cell phone video captured their panic.
Stop!
The mom was desperate to keep her daughter and herself from flying off the ride,
so she used all of her strength to hold down the safety bar.
I was so scared I was going to let go.
And here's mom, Anita Young, and her 15-year-old daughter, Riley, safely back home.
What's going through your mind? You're a mom, you're protecting your daughter,
and you're thinking something is wrong with this ride, I've got to save her.
I was literally thinking that my daughter was going to die.
Like how horrible of a mother I was because I can't save my kid.
When the ride finally stops, she confronts the operator.
That thing came open.
Oh God, I'm so sorry. I thought I locked it.
Riley was left with bruised ribs and other injuries.
She's got three bulging discs in her neck,
and then I ended up slipping a disc and a herniated disc in my lower back,
and then I sprained my hand from trying to hold it down.
My neck still hurts.
Mom and daughter were shocked to learn that just last month,
an inspection report for the ride found restraint bar latch broken.
When you saw the document that showed that this operator and this ride had been sighted in November,
did that make you angry?
It just showed me that they're all about their money, not about safety.
It came up loose. I'm holding it now.
The amusement park tells us safety is their priority.
They say the ride is being re-inspected.
