Troy Museum in Çanakkale
We've just arrived at the Troy Museum. Let's take a look.
Although legend has it that the Trojan War was about Helen and love,
it was actually about wealth, power and trade routes.
This is a great map of the excavation layers of Troy
and it looks like there were at least nine layers.
The museum is divided into four levels.
This sarcophagus is 400 BC.
It's important because it's the first time they'd used colours in the hunting scene.
It was reckoned that a 25-year-old man's body was found inside there.
In 1882, Troy was investigated and restored.
These artefacts are from the era Troy I.
Above the artefacts are films explaining how they were used.
Now we move into Troy II and it looks like a more varied diet.
By the nature of the artefacts they find,
they can actually tell what people ate.
As you go up there are storyboards taking you through the ages,
so we're leaving the Bronze Age and going to the Iron Age.
Found further away in Anatolia, this is a very early example of a sarcophagus.
This level is from the Roman period of Troy
and this is Hadrian, a very important Roman emperor.
And moving on up to the Byzantine period.
The museum has a lift and the ramp is easy.
Wow, these amazing pictures are from the last period of excavation.
It's worth saying that this museum was voted one of the top ten archaeological museums in Europe.
If you've come all this way, don't miss the great view from the roof.
We're going to be heading towards Troy now and that's over that way.
And all these places are mentioned in the Iliad.
It is personal choice but I like to do things in a certain order,
like with our film of the Champagne region.
And I'm so glad we came to the museum first and are now going to Troy,
so it whets my appetite because otherwise I might have thought,
oh, I've seen that if we did it the other way round.
There's a cafe and a shop on the ground floor
and, very importantly, nice clean restrooms.
We've arrived at Troy. It's about five minutes away from the museum in the coach.
The important positioning of the land of Troy meant that it was occupied for over 3,000 years.
So there was Troy I, Troy II, right up to Troy IX, and they're all standing on top of each other.
No one knows what they were actually called, but archaeologists have labelled them that.
Carvette's killing heat here in, you know, real hot summer.
Even if you cross on a zebra crossing, look and wait.
Remember the old gag, how many people can you fit in a mini?
Well, how many people do you think you can fit in there?
This was in the film starring Brad Pitt and Eric Banner called Troy.
So if you don't actually make it to Troy, the next best thing is to come and visit the Trojan horse and this model.
