Headed to Africa, but first my cracked carbon wheel

I'm heading to Africa tomorrow and I have put myself in a bit of a pickle.
I broke my rear wheel on Sunday in Rockville.
These night carbon wheels have done me pretty good for a long time but it was only a matter
of time before I broke one.
So it's the rear wheel.
And if you guys know me, I have backups for everything.
I try to have a backup of everything because this stuff is going to happen and all you
can do is be prepared.
So I have another wheel set and I bought this wheel set after I dented my rim in Fruita.
This was the wheel set that the Bronson came with, aluminum wheels.
I dented this on one of the first rides in Fruita.
So I bought a backup.
And unbeknownst to me, the backup is not boost.
It's not boost spacing.
When I ordered it, I thought it was boost spacing.
It's not boost spacing.
I don't have any torque caps or anything here.
Well, I have a bag of random torque caps but it's just not working.
So I need to get to the bike shop and go see if they can help me out.
I'm loading up all three wheels just in case.
Quick detour before the bike shop.
Got to pick up a couple packages.
This one's just an electric toothbrush but this one, this one is something cool.
It's a sign for the nugatorium.
So cool.
Matt from Oklahoma made this for me and it's so cool.
Can't wait to hang it up.
It's 2 o'clock and I have not eaten lunch yet.
That means it's McDonald's time.
Alright, let's see if they can help me out.
So it looks like it's my lucky day.
Tom's going to lend me a pair of Rovals and that will get me out on the trail.
We just need to switch it from Shimano to Srammy.
Now before we change this over, we just noticed this bike has some awesome little red racing
tape here to line up all of his components.
And I've heard this guy's a fan of the channel.
He's got a hell of a nice bike here.
It's just marked, this is like a little bit of tape so he knows where the center is, where
he can always get his stuff back in order.
I should start doing that.
It's a beautiful Bronson.
Sweet, top me off, front and rear, awesome.
Get these home, put them on the bike and make sure everything's solid but thank you so much
guys.
No problem.
Thanks Tom.
No problem.
Thanks Chris.
I will.
Always this last minute craziness of like okay, I've got this, I need this and that's
where the local bike shop saves the day.
Thanks guys.
Frame Up Bikes has been awesome.
Alright, it's much later in the day.
I just did a live stream packing up my bag and I hope you guys enjoyed that.
It's been a month now probably since that happened but such is the scheduling of YouTube
videos.
So the wheels are in here, they're good to go and it's time to get on a plane.
Oh, we made it.
Alright, thanks.
Have fun.
I will.
Alright, the first leg of the journey begins.
Check the bag, check this bag, got my passport.
This is a fantastic social experiment right now because I am talking to a camera in public
and I'm wearing sweatpants in public for the first time in my life.
So it's quite amazing.
San Francisco to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Nairobi, zone 5, okay?
Made it through security just fine and my first stop was to pay way too much for a bunch
of useless snacks.
In early, getting seated and ready to go.
Made it safely to Amsterdam and oh man, it's just as crazy as they all say except for I'm
just in the airport.
I think it's going to be worth it.
So I've now been going for 24 hours and I think this is the easy part.
Now the hard part begins.
Alright first hurdle passed, apparently you need a visa to get into the country, I did
not have a visa.
There was a really long line for a visa and I didn't wait in that line, I just talked
to the lady and I happened to have $50 US in my wallet, paid it, got through.
Here we go.
Bike is secure, now to go through customs.
Alright I found my man, he had my sign, John.
I've made it to the hotel room, feeling pretty good, we've got the mosquito net above the
bed, got the bug spray.
Don't see any mosquitoes at the moment but I might have to take preventative measures.
So tomorrow the adventure will continue, let's get there.
It's about 6am the next morning now and I slept pretty well and I feel like my body
clock is going to be right on time instead of being all messed up.
Took a shower and I was looking for the hot water and it took me a while to find it.
It's like a coffee maker.
So now I'll probably head down to the old restaurant at the hotel, get a little breakfast
I think, and then just wait for my pickup.
Ok I ventured out of the room for the first time and it's really nice here.
It's called the Amani Gardens and they've got some nice gardens.
Hey what the hell is that?
Making it fresh, oh yeah.
Breakfast was solid, anytime I can get a couple eggs in me in the morning I'm good to go.
Now I'm going to take some of my malaria pills.
I just take one of these a day with a meal and it'll keep me from getting malaria.
I haven't seen too many mosquitoes yet but I'm sure they'll be out here.
Oh no, this is not, this is my diarrhea pills just in case, not the right ones.
Alright we are fully loaded up, Adam's here, my host for the week, awesome let's get going.
First stop, the mall.
Yes, always.
So we got some security checkpoint first before we get in the mall, do a little search.
Alright first step done, got a few thousand Kenyan shillings, be good to go for a little
while hopefully.
Now we're figuring out the old grocery store.
It's a new experience for me as well.
These seem familiar.
Croquitos.
Okay, I loaded up with some ham and Adam's just going to eat dog food, he's gotten used
to it.
Okay, he bought more than just dog food.
I bought toothpaste as well.
Toothpaste and dog food and yogurt.
Instead of lion repellent, I want some lion attracting thing because we don't see those
enough either and we're not going to see them this week I'll just tell you that.
We'll see some zebras when we'll see some gazelles, maybe a cape buffalo if we're lucky.
When we go to Hell's Gate, Naivasha.
Nice, no snakes.
We don't see snakes around, it's a possibility but I mean.
Australia, that's all the guys we're talking about, snakes snakes snakes and we never saw
one snake.
You know, you think Africa, all these snakes and lions, the lions are in the parks or running
around in Nairobi and the snakes are, well in the rural place people kill them because
they're scary and yeah they're just around.
Over on the other side of Mount Longinot, you've got Lake Naivasha and those mountains
back there, that's where Hell's Gate National Park is so we're going to ride, actually climb
up to the top of that mountain, it's very very steep and then we're going to come and
ride around there.
Awesome.
Next stop, Safaricom SIM card.
We didn't get a SIM card, Adam already has a SIM card for me, but we got credit, credit
to top up the phone.
So this should be good for like 3 gigabytes of data.
We're at 8,000 feet right now, which means when we go riding, I'll be huffing and puffing
and Adam will be fine.
Well I'm sure you'll catch up quite soon.
I'm going to make you hurt.
Alright, let's see.
Okay.
That's fine.
Whoa.
Okay, that's good.
There we go.
Okay.
Now you need to lead the way.
Yeah.
This is easy.
Take notes.
Cool.
So this is the Moffat Guesthouse, this is where I'm going to be staying for the princely
sum of 6 US dollars a day.
Pretty amazing.
So let's see.
This is awesome.
Looks good to me.
That's nice.
That's so light.
Here we go.
That is really nice.
We're at Adam's house now.
Boom.
Everything is still there.
Cool, cool.
Everything's looking pretty good.
Got it into the stand.
Put the old handlebars on and get her suited up.
Alright the bike is built up, feeling good.
We'll see why I took Adam's invite.
I saw him doing a bunch of goofy jibs and flip flops, so I know I can trust that he's
a pretty good rider.
Alright, here goes.
The crank flip wheelie, invented by Adam.
Wait until I put the shoes on.
Nice.
Ok, I'm going to go check and see if my room is ready.
Change into my riding gear and we're going to go have our first ride, go get some lunch.
