Jan. 17 marks the anniversary of the devastating Northridge Earthquake that shook the San Fernando Valley 30 years ago. NTD’s Christina Corona offers guidance on staying prepared for significant events, and how to be ready for “the big one.”
The 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck shortly after 4.30 a.m. on January 17, 1994 and lasted
around 10 to 20 seconds.
The historic quake caused 57 deaths and injured thousands.
Seven major freeway bridges in the area collapsed, leaving hundreds of people trapped in their
cars.
82,000 residential and commercial units and 5,400 mobile homes were damaged or destroyed.
The earthquake caused up to $20 billion in damage costs, plus $40 billion in economic
loss.
The best time to prepare for any disaster is before it happens.
Here are some ways to prepare for an earthquake.
If you are indoors, stay inside.
Take cover under a desk or table.
Avoid windows, fireplaces, and heavy furniture.
Don't stay in the kitchen.
If you're outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings and hazards.
If you're driving, stop safely away from bridges and tall structures.
Stay inside your car until the shaking stops.
You can now receive an early earthquake warning alert on your phone by downloading MyShake
app, Android Earthquake Alerts, or Wireless Emergency Alerts to be notified before the
strongest shake arrives.
