let's talk about the design software
that everyone is going crazy over and
that is canva now we get tons of
questions around here at Maker's going
to learn on how do you use Cana what's
it good for I'm going to let you guys in
on a little secret there are so many
things that I bet you didn't know you
could do in canva let's get right into
it so canva is a free design software if
you didn't already know that but it has
a pro access subscription so you can use
it for free and there are lots of great
things in canva that are great with the
free version but if you are a business
owner or if you are in social media
honestly if you work with your Cricut a
lot I would suggest getting the canva
pro account it's really good because it
has lots more options and I'll say that
if you are a teacher or a student they
do offer discounts which is amazing so
you may not have already known that and
that's going to be my first little
tidbit so as as you can see up here on
this plans and pricing dropdown menu you
can see that they offer the free tool
for classrooms districts as well as
students and for nonprofits this is
amazing because I know a lot of people
that are into crafts are usually
teachers and if you're a student and
you're just into crafting and you want
to learn more about canva you're going
to be able to get access to it for free
so it's pretty helpful you can click on
these and it will want to verify you if
you're a teacher
if you're trying to get it for your
entire School obviously you can reach
out to canva and do it that way and then
there's some resources over here for the
students so that is very helpful if
you're wanting to get access to canva
but you don't necessarily want to use
your own money or if you don't have the
funds for it right now and you fit into
one of these categories you're going to
be able to use it to its fullest
potential so I've got over 10 more tips
for you all make sure to stay tuned and
watch this video all the way through so
you can learn all the things that you
did not already know about canva now the
next thing I want to talk about is
creating your own custom siiz designs so
I've got this little icon right here
when we SE select the create a design
option you can make your own size
documents now obviously there are some
suggested sizes these are very helpful
if you're trying to make something you
don't know the size that you need but if
you do know how big you want your image
to be and it's specific document size
you can just select that we're going to
change this to inches if you type in
your size and then change this it will
mess things up so if I were to type in
10 by 10 and it was still set on pixels
and then I change it to inches it
automatically adjusts it to whatever
that would be in inches from pixels does
that Mak sense so you want to change it
to inches first and then type in your
size so so we're just going to do a
10x10 document and we're going to hit
create new design now I'm going to do
lots of beginner friendly tips in this
video but I also want to show some more
detailed in-depth tips but one of the
basic things that a lot of people don't
know is that you can actually upload
your own images and your own fonts to
canva so if we wanted to upload our own
image we can go over here to
uploads and then upload files you can
use any of the makers going to learn
images and pull them into canva this way
and I'm going to show you exactly how so
we've got a couple here that we could
use you can click and drag them right
into
here and it'll just pop onto your page
or you can just hit upload and then go
to your downloads and open the file and
it'll just pop over here now if you want
to add your own text let me show you how
to do this so we're going to go ahead
and add a text box you can just just
type in whatever word that you
want with that word selected we're going
to go to the font drop-down menu now you
can see there's tons of fonts in here
that canva already has but if I want to
use one of our makers going to learn
fonts because those are my favorites I'm
going to upload a font right down here
on the bottom of that dropdown menu and
then you can see it pulls up our recent
downloads so you just have to find the
font that you are wanting to use you can
search for the name if you don't find it
directly in your downloads and then
you're just going to click on
thatf file type and we're going to open
then it's going to say please confirm
the following by uploading my own custom
font I acknowledge I own that font or
have the right to use it for my intended
purposes and then we're going to select
yes upload anyways and it's going to pop
right into Cana fun fact if you become a
maker going to learn member you automat
automatically get commercial access use
all of our fonts as well as our images
meaning if you wanted to take our images
take our fonts and create door signs or
cards or anything like that and sell
them you have creative freedom to use
those and then sell them for money for
yourself so that's pretty cool a lot of
people don't know that about us and a
lot of times whenever you're purchasing
fonts and files from other places you
have to purchase individual commercial
license for every single image and font
and it can get really really expensive
but you get access to that commercial
license through the membership with the
cost of our monthly or yearly
subscription fee so it's all included
makes it super easy for you all to
become craft Sellers and then you can
see over here our font is in canva how
easy is that you all I will say that
uploading fonts is a canva pro feature
feure and that's why I recommend getting
canva Pro if you're going to plan on
using it a lot it's so helpful even just
for everyday life if you like to design
your own invitations or your Christmas
cards or flyers or anything like that
there's just so many things that you can
do in canva that really really allow you
to get creative while you have to be a
pro member to upload fonts you do have
the ability to upload images as a
standard canva user next I want to show
you all how to take a skinny delicate
and beautiful font and make it a little
bit thicker so that it shows up better
for your designs so what you're going to
do is select your text box we're going
to go to effects up here on the top and
then you can see all these effects pop
up now if you didn't know these existed
these are awesome for so many different
reasons but right now I want to talk
about this outline function because this
is what allows us to thicken our fonts
now you can see when I select it it adds
this gray almost like an offset if
you're familiar with Cricut design space
it's very similar to that but I'm just
wanting to make this a little bit
thicker I want my font just to stand out
more so what I'm going to do I can even
manually top in the amount of thickness
I want I feel like the nine was about
where I want it and then I'm going to
change it to the same exact color can
you all see the difference whenever I
click that over how much Bolder it makes
it it does kind of make the inside of
the E disappear so I'm going to go down
just a little bit but this allows us to
make Bolder fonts with any font that we
want so you can add this effect to
pretty much any skinny font that you are
using I want to click through these
fonts just to show you some cool
different effects that you can add to
your text the outline is one of my
favorites just for making it thicker
there's so many different effects that
you can add and then down here this is
one that we love to use and it's the
curve function so you can see if I
select that I'm going to have the
ability to curve it less or more or even
curve it up if I want to this is just
another effect we can add to our
Arsenal another really neat text feature
that I love is under our apps so let's
click on apps and we're going to go to
typ Ty craft so when you select that
you're going to see this little icon
we're just going to click it and then
you can see here that this is going to
allow us to warp our text in canvas so
you can type out exactly what you want
okay so if we wanted to Tope out the
word lovely and then we wanted to select
a font now the fonts are limited over
here so you don't necessarily have
access to all the fonts that you've got
downloaded and things like that but they
do have quite a good selction ction so
let's just find one that we like let's
say this is kind of groovy we could do
that so you can see down here it's got
all these little dots what you're going
to be able to do is move these dots to
warp your text how cool is that so you
can make it like a big bubble you could
do it like a wave and it takes a little
bit of getting used to um but once you
mastered this I feel like it would be
such a cool feature to use especially if
you wanted to make some type of groovy
style design or something like that and
if for some reason you don't like it you
can reset it and then just adjust
accordingly so let's just stretch this
out here how we want it and then once
you've got it how you want it you can
add your element to your design and it
just pops it right over here and you can
use it for whatever you want now if you
you wanted to do something with an
outline you can select that outline
option you can change the thickness of
your border and even change the color of
your border so let's just say we wanted
to have an orange border and then you
can go in here we can change the word to
lovely
again and then we can adjust accordingly
so lots of fun things you can do with
this
feature and then you can just add it to
your
design now canva has a wide array of
different Graphics so if you were ever
looking over here in the canva graphics
you can select see all and then you can
see it has your recently used up here
it's got featured you can even just
search for things like
flowers and then if you see one that's
kind of the style that you're wanting
say you wanted these watercolor Wild
wild flowers if you want to see more of
that you can hover over the image and
then see these three dots we're going to
select those and then it's going to give
you all of these keywords so we can hit
show all keywords it's got six different
ones here and you can select watercolor
if you wanted to see more of those
watercolor images and it's going to pop
up all of these
watercolors and then if you just for
some reason wanted watercolor florals
you can just add in florals at the end
of that and it's going to give you all
these different options too so this is
super helpful if you're trying to find a
very specific type of image the search
function just helps a ton especially
using those keywords if you're on the
Maker's going to learn website and you
see a watercolor image over here that
you want to use we have tons of
different options you can always tap in
watercolor up here in the search bar and
it's going to give you all of these
options how cute are these so we could
just download one and I'm going to show
you how how to pull an image in let's
just use this floral watercolor right
here it's going to pop into a zip folder
we're going to click on that and then we
can click and drag this into our canva
template beautiful so we have this
beautiful floral watercolor here that we
can use for our design and I love the
colors in this so let's say we wanted to
pull the color scheme off of this image
so let me show you what you can do let's
add a text
box so let's say that you are making a
wedding shower for someone and you want
all of the colors from the image to be
cohesive throughout your design what you
can do is select your image and then go
to these three dots right here and we're
going to hit apply colors to page now
it's automatically going to give us this
burgundy color if if you're not
satisfied with that you can go back and
you can hit it again and it's going to
give you some more options so this is
really helpful in choosing a color
palette if you're not comfortable doing
that you can just go in here and canva
will do it for you I love this feature
and you can always change it like if you
love this background you're like I don't
really think those words are popping off
the page good you can come over here and
change just the color of the text if you
wanted to and then if you're still not
happy you can select that image again
and hit apply colors to page and it's
just going to continue to give you new
options not only does this work for SVG
and PNG images but you can use actual
photos of people and make a color
palette based off of an actual photo so
let's just say that you're using this
for Branding for example you can use
this actual image and go to apply colors
to page and it's going to adjust the
images that you've added to match the
colors in the photo so that makes it
really nice now this image right here is
obviously a PNG image so it's not going
to allow us to change the colors um but
I can show you how to tell whether one
of these images is an SVG versus a PNG
but for now if you're wanting to
customize the background or the text or
an SVG image this function is going to
allow you to do that and obviously you
can just go in here and click and change
until you were satisfied
now I want to talk about how to tell the
difference between an SVG image and a
PNG image now I've got the watercolor
flowers that we were using earlier if
you look up here there is no place for
me to change the colors if I have it
selected now if I go down and select
this howdy look right here I have all of
these colors that is letting me know
that this is an SVG image and meaning it
has multiple layers a PNG image is a
flattened image meaning all the layers
have been vectorized down into one layer
and SVG is going to have the separate
layers and it's going to allow us to
change the colors okay so this image we
cannot edit we have very limited editing
access I should say this one we can
totally change any of the colors if we
wanted them to match our brand we can
totally just change all of these to
Maker's going to learn colors easy peasy
you just go in here and click them and
just like that they are down to our
branded colors so that's an easy way for
you to tell if you're working with an
SVG versus a PNG and you can see we'll
use that tip that I just taught you all
about applying the colors to the page if
you wanted to change the colors of these
SVG letters it's going to automatically
change whenever we select that apply
colors to page so any SVG images that
you have on your canvas whenever you're
using that function it's going to
automatically adjust those to match
whatever image you're selecting another
thing to note about using pngs versus
svgs is that with if I wanted to scale
up this image as an SVG the quality is
going to remain the same when you're
working with a PNG the bigger I stretch
this image the fuzzier it's going to get
now you may not be able to notice it
here but if I get this bigger and bigger
and bigger whenever I go to print it
it's going to be very fuzzy and our
howdy is going to remain sharp so that's
the really big difference between a PNG
image versus an SVG image now while you
can't adjust PNG images necessarily like
the way that we did with this SVG down
here there are a couple options so you
can go to edit photo after you have your
image
selected obviously there are filters
down here and then there's even this
effects area you can go to the duo tone
and this will give you kind of like a
two-toned image look so if you're
wanting to change it to black and white
or if you wanted to add one of these
cool effects you can do that but you're
not going to have nearly as much
accessibility as you would if it were an
SVG you can go in here and change the
color of the highlights and things like
that as well as the Shadows but like I
said you just don't have as much
opportunity to customize your colors as
you would with an SV
G okay now let's say that you're wanting
to put multiple SVG images on this
canvas but you're wanting to make sure
that they are evenly spaced what you can
do is Select them all and then we're
going to go to position and you can
space evenly vertically as well as
horizontally and you can also tidy them
up so it will clean them up so they're
evenly spaced now right here they're
overlapping obviously um but it puts
them right in a row rather than just
aligning them to Center and things like
that so you have all of these align
functions that you can use which are
super super helpful in making sure that
all of your design is precise then if
you move it just a little bit and you're
kind of playing around with it you can
select it resize it and go back to
position and tidy it up again now if we
wanted to save this three flower image
as an SVG we have the ability to do that
in canva which is super cool so what
you're going to need to do is go to
share and then we're going to go to
download and then under file toop we're
going to select
SVG I'm going to give this a transparent
background so we don't need this blue
we're just wanting the three flowers I'm
going to select transparent background
we're going to hit download and that's
going to go straight into our downloads
folder so we're going to open up design
space and I'm I'm just going to show you
how you can pull this SVG into Cricut
design
space open up a new project we're going
to go to
upload upload
image and then we can go to
recents we can go to downloads and then
there's our lovely 30 by3 SVG image it's
going to pop in over here and we're
going to select
upload and add to Canvas and then you
can use this this design to cut out on
your Cricut or you could just print it
out and use it for sublimation projects
lots of options
here all right how fun is it to work in
canva I feel like there's so many things
to learn I don't even feel like I've
touched on everything these are just a
few things that I've learned over the
years that a lot of people don't know
about and I thought that you all could
