And then the same way the notion of fetish was invented as a symbol of
African religion
As for me
I have seen in no part of Africa the Negroes worshipping a fetish
The idea of a barbarous Negro is a European invention
Which has consequently prevailed in Europe until the beginning of this century
So essentially what this European archaeologist saw impressed him so much that he was compelled to speak honestly about it
So we have to ask ourselves what kind of things were these archaeologists and travelers seeing
Let's begin our search with West Africa with what is known as Sudano-Sahelian architecture
Sudano-Sahelian architecture is a regional indigenous architectural style attributed mainly
To the Mende people of the Sahel
And the grasslands of West Africa
This style is characterized by the use of mud bricks
And an adobe plaster with large wooden log support beams that
Jut out from the wall face for large buildings such as
Mosques and palaces
These beams also act as support for reworking which is done at regular intervals
And involves the local community
The earliest examples of Sudano-Sahelian style
Likely comes from Jen around 250 BC
Where the first evidence of permanent mud brick architecture in the region is attested
This style is interesting because the beams that protrude out of the mud brick structures allow for constant reworking
And even redesign
So in a sense the architecture itself allows for the very idea of evolution over time
Mansa Musa literally put this architectural style on the map
With his extensive building projects in Timbuktu
The Sankore University in Mali which is one of the three ancient centers of learning
Was actually financed by a local wealthy Mandinka woman
She financed the plans to turn Sankore University
Into a world-class learning institution
