At the end of December 2023, four Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers were shot down by the Ukrainian army. People can't help but wonder whether this kind of fighter-bomber, which has been so hyped by the Russians, really has a future? Reminiscent of the fact that the U.S. Air Force has always wanted to retire the A-10 attack aircraft, it seems that the prospects for that attack aircraft are indeed not good.
The Su-34 was developed at the end of the Soviet Union to replace the aging Su-24 tactical bomber and the Su-25 attack aircraft for the purpose of performing tactical bombing and ground attack missions.
Although the Su-34 inherits the aerodynamic shape design of the Su-27 family, its cockpit adopts a side-by-side two-seat configuration, so the head becomes larger. In order to reduce the volume and weight, the head is designed to be flat. Hence the nickname Hell Duck.
hello everyone welcome back to Masa
military at the end of December 2023
four Russian s34 fighter bombers were
shot down by the Ukrainian army people
can't help but wonder whether this kind
of fighter bomber which has been so
hyped up by the Russians really has a
future reminiscent of the fact that the
US Air Force has always wanted to retire
the A10 attack aircraft it seems that
the prospects for that attack aircraft
are indeed not
good the s34 was developed at the end of
the Soviet Union to replace the Aging
Sue 24 tactical bomber and the Sue 25
attack aircraft for the purpose of
Performing tactical bombing and ground
attack Missions at that time the Sue 24
and 25 were the Soviet Air Force they
had ground attack and close air support
as their main combat missions resp
effectively both had a single combat
function and lacked multi-purpose
capabilities however in Modern Warfare a
fighter aircraft with multiple combat
functions is needed to adapt to
different combat environments and needs
since the collapse of the Soviet Union
the Sue 34 has gone through a long
development and testing process the
first prototype began flight testing in
December 1994 but it was not until 2006
that the first phase of flight testing
and evaluation was completed and it did
not officially enter service until March
2014 by November 2022 taking into
account losses from mechanical failures
aircraft converted to teaching aircraft
and losses in multiple WS the actual
Fleet size is estimated to be about 125
aircraft although the Sue 34 inherits
the aerodynamic shape design of the Sue
27 family its cockpit adopts a
side-by-side two- seat configuration so
the head becomes larger in order to
reduce the volume and weight the head is
designed to be flat hence the nickname
hell duck compared with the Sue 27 the
Sue 34 has strengthened the body
structure and armor in order to increase
the bomb load and ground attack and also
increased the fuel load to increase the
range but this also resulted in an
increase in weight and a decrease in
maneuverability for this purpose an
engine with more thrust was used
the s34 has a length of 76' 7 in a
wingspan of 48t 3 in and a height of 20
ft the Su 34's airframe has a rugged
structure and uses system redundancy to
withstand combat damage from small
caliber weapons fire and high energy
missile Warhead fragments the crew is
located in a titanium bathtub cockpit
with 67 in of armor that protects them
from direct attack
however the s34 also inherits a common
problem of the su27 family the weight of
the aircraft is too heavy which reflects
the consistent design thinking of Soviet
fighter aircraft the Sue 34 has an empty
weight of
29,6 4 lb compared with the f-15e which
has an empty weight of only
34,600 lb the s34 has 12 weapon hard
points and an ammunition load of 8
18,000 to
26450 lb relatively speaking the F-16
has a maximum bomb load of 17,200 lb and
the f-15e has a maximum bomb load of
23,000 lb the s34 adopts a Canard design
which is very similar to the
carrier-based Sue 27k and Sue 33 the
cannards are used to generate stable
vortices that interact with the tail to
improve directional stability during
High angle of attack flight the Su 34's
canards also help restore the
aerodynamic balance and imbalance caused
by the heavier nose and forward fuselage
section and can also be used to
compensate for the loss of
maneuverability due to its heavy weight
what the Russians are most proud of
about the s34 is that there is ample
space in the front of the fuselage the
s34 can accommodate a larger caliber
passive phased array radar and it also
brings a larger cabin space
the pilot can even get up from his seat
and stretch his legs or take a nap in
the back of the cabin in addition the
s34 also has a toilet and a food heating
device so it is called The Fighter
bomber with the best driving environment
the s34 adopts a digital redundant flyby
wire control system this digital flyby
wire control system has an active
Control Function it can greatly reduce
the up and down bumps of the aircraft
when flying in low altitude turbulence
improve the aiming at accuracy of the
attack and reduce the size of the
aircraft the deformation and crew
fatigue enable the aircraft to perform
long-term terrain following flights at
low altitudes due to the increased
weight the s34 uses two Saturn Al 31f M1
after burning turbo fan engines with
greater thrusts with a single military
thrust of 7.6 tons and an after burning
thrust of 12.5 tons the internal fuel
tank can carry 12.1 tons of of fuel and
the three auxiliary fuel tanks can carry
up to 7.2 tons of fuel there is also a
retractable refueling Probe on the left
side of the nose with a maximum range of
4,000
km judging from the Russo Ukrainian War
close ground support attack aircraft are
indeed outdated and their fate of being
eliminated is inevitable thus the US Air
Force's decision to re Tire the A10
attack aircraft is on par with that
thinking the A10 attack aircraft like
the F-16 has served diligently for more
than 40 years it is not only durable but
also cost efficient the A10 has a strong
self- protection and a large ammunition
load it also has an extremely powerful
sarrel 30 mm cannon with thousands of
rounds of ammunition it has played a
huge role in previous Wars however the
current Battlefield environment has
changed well without Absolute Air
superiority such attack aircraft have
become very dangerous on the Ukrainian
Battlefield the frequent shooting down
of Russian Sue 25 Su 34 and CA 52 close
ground support aircraft is good evidence
the retirement of the A10 was blocked
for many years but after seeing the
situation on the Ukrainian Battlefield
the US Congress finally agreed to retire
the A10 in
2022 starting in April 2023 the first
batch of 2 1 a10c attacked aircraft will
be retired and sent to the aircraft
Cemetery in Arizona the US Air Force
plans to retire all A10 attack aircraft
by 2030 the a10's mission will be shared
by the F35 f-15e F15 ex the fa 18f and
of course various drones that are
becoming more and more popular in this
Russia Ukraine war reconnaissance and
attack drones have played a huge role
and will keep playing this role in The
Four Season able future okay that's all
