Din Check, New England’s local desi Bollywood band, recently released its first original song Fursat Kanha (Where is the Spare Time/Leisure), delivering a strong message about slowing down to smell the flowers on the journey of life.
The musical video depicts two individuals, too busy in the race, who have no time or leisure to enjoy the small joys of life.
In an exclusive video interview with INDIA New England News, three Din Check band members- Meenakshi Kulshreshtha, Jolly Bhatia, and Sameer Bhambhani—talk about composition and production of Fursat Kanha, as well as the 13-year journey of the band.

welcome to indiaan L news Our Guest
today is three founding members of D
band which was founded 13 years ago just
now they have released a video song
called fat kaha where is the spare time
where is the
leure when i s for the first time just
the name fsat really forced me to click
on the video and I watched it and I had
tremendous joy and pleasure and enjoyed
the music and the videography I asked
them to come to our studio and talk
about fset and also 13-year journey of D
our first guest today is minachi and
she's the one who came up with this idea
of a f may actually Welcome to our
studio thank you p and really pleasure
to have you here this is the first time
you are you are here in our studio yes
this is my first time with uh uh in the
conversation with you excellent so so
now um the name fet already you think
about it and you feel you are relaxed at
least I feel that way yes so I'm told
that this is your idea and how did you
come with this idea and how long it took
to compose the song and produce the
video so I think as a group we talked
about writing our own song producing our
own song but for so we never got around
to doing this and I remember um I wrote
the song about two years ago but again
we're so busy with our gigs and and
shows that we get and we just never get
around to working on a song creating it
from you know it beginning to the end
and when I shared with the band you know
that we want to do this everybody was on
board and we said all right let's work
on it maybe now so well just I'm going
to interrupt you so we have two other
members of your band Yes jly and Sam
they are here yes so we going to talk to
them after you yes absolutely go ahead
and they'll talk more about the band and
and everything else but yes when we
discussed it everybody came on board and
everybody thought that it resonated with
them because anytime we talk to someone
to say hey what makes you happy why
don't you do more of it the answer is
foraha so the message of the song is to
find foret to do things you like to do
find foret to do things that make you
happy and and that's the whole story U
of the song I was inspired by the band
itself because we all are busy
professional we all have full-time jobs
kids everything that everybody does but
when we try to find some foret to do
what we love it it gives us tremendous
Joy so since you created this uh the
whole concept from you know from writing
composing the song to the whole
completion of the videography uh what is
fsat for you so fsat for me is the time
we make for ourselves right and when we
say ourselves it it's time that we make
to do things that actually nourish our
soul right when we do things that
genuinely make us happy we almost have
to pause and stop and smile and enjoy
that moment to me that is for now we can
talk on this topic for years yeah so how
do you know that you are in foress so I
think we have to get close to ourselves
and I often think about it we need to
really observe what is really making us
happy energized versus what is the stuff
that we're doing just because we have
been doing or we need to do right our
jobs our commute our Drive um our heart
will tell us what we do which is
actually a nourishing thing for our soul
makes us happy makes us joyful and to me
that defines it yeah so now two years
ago you played this idea you came up you
composed a song yeah then you talk to
your band and how the band responded
amazing everybody was on board with it
right away actually we were always on
board with it for few years before when
you know when we started working on it
we just couldn't find time we were very
busy postco we somebody talking about
forsa couldn't find time for for exactly
yeah right so we were like we have to
send this message and and I think as
soon as everybody jumped on board the
song kept getting better and better
right with every feedback yes I had the
framework of it but everyone contributed
their little thing in it to make it what
it turned out to be as a final product
so is it your first composition or you
have composed songs and and written
poetry before so I do write but I keep
it to myself I don't share um I never
think that I'll share most of the time
I'll just share with my husband or you
know my sister or somebody like that um
but this has given me the strength to
say okay there can be something made out
of these things and there's good
messages some of them have really good
messages and you know music is our our
way to send that message across so it's
almost a responsibility to send
something positive out so can you say a
few lines of this um
fatah not necessarily singing but just
so that you know our viewers can get
some sort of idea sure um um one of the
lines of it which which I really like is
is comes from the verse of the song
which
says
[Music]
fore
[Music]
so again this is this is my favorite
part of the song and it also talks about
you know unless we have time to slow
down and smile we can't even identify
that little light of God that that
exists in all of us which nourishes US
and which makes us accept and love
everything and everyone around us so and
uh also if you can talk a little bit
about the the video Ry and suiting of
the yeah yeah so when we actually were
practicing this in our you know basement
Studio we were practicing the song and
we were like excited about it to okay
we're going to record it um my nephew
who was a cinematographer a c he has
worked a lot in the Taj framers in India
he said why don't we make a music video
of it and I initially my reaction was
it's a lot of work uh and he's like yeah
let's give it because it will help us
send the message more strongly and again
everybody in the band jumped on it we
are very enthusiastic when anything
positive is happening so everybody
jumped on board and again we had some
concept in in my mind we everybody added
their little ideas and then we decided
okay let's go for it and so glad we did
that because I think the music video
expresses the song so much better than
just an audio song excellent thank you
so much your time thanks a lot excent
fah our next guest is Sam also one of
the founders of Bollywood band D we are
going to come back to fsat kaha video
song but before that we want to talk
with Samir about 13 years of
d uh I remember one of the first Major
Performance they had was at our uh A
Wedding Expo in Taj um uh not Taj it was
um rich richz in Boston right and uh so
13 years since like yesterday so Sam
tell us um how this 13-year Journey has
been and maybe before we talk about
Journey when was the how did you guys
come up with this idea absolutely
absolutely so it has been an amazing
journey first of all um 13 years ago um
our band members Jolly baa as you know
here he's here and Sam ra and I got
together um and it was just a common
friendship we we met each other and
there was a common interest of Music we
uh we all had some musical backgrounds
um and we we got together we started to
um uh play we started to jam at parties
and anywhere we performed even though it
was very casual um atmosphere people
loved it we enjoyed it and that's what
really really started the band um and
then rest of the members over time they
they joined in um uh we have a lot of
talent in the band um minaki as as you
know we we just spoke to her um also
aner yeah I know her who is an amazing
musician and she's aing she's a singer
she does lots of things she composes
puts puts together all the music Kamal
dasu who's who's our who's our drummer
and then um Mike Grover who's a
basist um so you know the journey has
been amazing it was tough in the
beginning uh getting everybody together
and to set up the studios to get all the
gear it took us a long time time and um
and when we first started perform you
know um it's a it's a new band people
don't recognize um so so that that was a
tough period but but during that time we
learned a lot uh but most importantly we
were having so much fun yeah I think
that's the key right that's that's sure
we were like uh hey this is great we'll
just keep going and uh and now 13 years
later uh we have performed in um pretty
much all over New England uh we have
also gone outside New England uh we have
performed in New York uh
Pennsylvania and we want to keep
expanding that um so now tell us uh some
of the you know the audience or some of
the places where you have performed who
who are the people who really get
excited about inviting DJ absolutely
absolutely so it's a pretty broad
spectrum uh we perform at uh at weddings
um at different occasions uh people have
um uh graduation parties um uh a couple
of times you perform as Wedding Expo
absolutely I was going to say Wedding
Expo We performed the woman of the
year um but also a lot of parties uh we
have performed at Vision a achl and and
and several others um but it's it's a
it's a combination the Spectrum ranges
from more individual parties to bigger
weddings to bigger concerts we have also
had our own
concerts where where D was the
uh sponsored by by ourselves so it's a
really broad spectrum and it just keeps
growing and all along Bollywood all
along Bollywood the team all come back
to Bollywood it's always Bollywood
there's a little combination we do some
uh what we call mashups we take some
English songs okay and we we combine
them with with Bollywood songs so we do
some mashups we do some um uh um you
know besides Hindi song we also do some
Tamil and Telugu songs excellent and we
try to incorporate them as well so I
know you are not a singer but now you to
tell me what are some of the most sought
auor songs by D Che so um T um um people
associate us with fun you know in in
simple terms musty and um lot of songs
uh you know that are talking about musty
next time after you I'm going to talk to
Jolly yes and I'm going to ask him to
tell us few dialogs about Mona darling
and things like that absolutely I mean
jolly and musty are the same name as you
know okay okay but a lot of our songs
are very dance oriented um uh disco era
we have a lot of theme songs from that
so the songs pretty much are across the
uh Spectrum um we do a lot of Punjabi
songs um um and and some of our songs
are also sort of rock U uh themed songs
um uh so we've taken some of the songs
and we have uh uh put some uh you know
Distortion guitars and drums to to to
make them more of a rock songs and um so
it's a very uh broad spectrum so for
example like uh say we are somebody
having a wedding and you really need
some you know dancing bombastic song
Happ songs you I know you guys do that
but what about if somebody having a some
sort of a very Serene sober event like
say Vision a or some fundraising or
something like that you guys do that as
well so absolutely so what we do is we
typically have something like Vision a
you like mentioned we usually have a
theme and then we build the entire set
around the theme so we may start off
with a little bit slower songs little
bit sentimental songs um uh songs that
have more sort of musical value to it um
more complex songs and then we may lead
into what we call the musty songs and
and in the end honestly every every show
we do at the end everybody's just
dancing and jumping and and and and it's
it's a brings a lot of joy to ex well
one thing you have learned in the last
13 years from the band being in the band
so I I always say this and I've said
this many times before um the reason
band has sustained for such a long time
is because we are friends first and that
friendship has sort of carried us
through you a lot of bands they form a
year or two and they're gone they G yeah
sure so one of the things I've learned
is that friendship and the bond that we
have has really what has kept us going
all these 13 years and and we we cherish
and we value that excellent Sam thank
you so much for your time absolutely and
talking about musty I'm going to talk to
Jolly about it and we're going to start
with Mona darling dialogue absolutely
Jolly musty it's the same word okay
excellent good okay thank you so much
thank you again appreciate it I thought
we were going to talk about fat but as
uh s mentioned that uh jali equals to
must
so I'm going to start with must and my
favorite is your dialogue from about the
Mona darling and then we'll come back
and talk about so that that brings back
memories because the last time I was
here in this studio we were talking
about Mona darling in the exactly yeah
yeah so we can start
with yeah EXC one more and I want to
look at the camera
too
Robert
excellent so this is musty yes so I'm
really glad that you know s men and you
know that the musty very important part
of any band this is you know music or
having fun you are everybody at the same
pace so what a great wonderful idea I
did so now coming back to on the serious
notes um mentioned earlier I was very
impressed by forat KH so if you can talk
little bit about the the production uh
side of this video how how it happened
where did you suit it and how all all
this things fell in place no I I think
it goes hand in hand like musty is the
whole premise that we build this on you
know the name dck itself is it
communicates musty but we as a group can
get serious we take music seriously we
take our production seriously and we can
get serious is and divide work and and
Conquer what needs to be done so I think
there's a lot of work that went into the
production in the preparation getting to
the point that we were actually going to
um you know do the music part and also
then do the uh visual part uh so first
I'll talk about the music component and
then go to the uh the video component
the men actually spent a lot of time
actually creating individual parts of
who was going to play what there was a
lot of brainstorming that went from
every individual um participant and also
as a group as to what will work what
will not work we played it a few times
there were tweaks going back adjusting
the lyrics a lot of U as we buil it
together and when it all came together
uh you know we actually uh did it
backwards we first uh recorded a SC
scratch uh soundtrack and did the video
that was a lot due to travel schedules
and all and then uh we shot the video on
the scratch track and then we went to um
a uh Studio sa Studio on Newberry Street
in Boston and recorded the song uh
recording the song was a absolutely new
experience for all this was the first
time you guys did that uh I've had the
experience of recording in the studio
with prsh before but everybody else
together so uh and because we are so
used to performing as a team um on stage
this was a totally different
Paradigm uh we had U we wanted to play
together uh but the sound Engineers they
were like it's best if you do your
pieces individually so that part was uh
a discovery a learning uh we performed
together then there were parts we did
separately H and then just the you know
the new technology of layering sounds
and overlaying that was just just you
know new and exciting experience um and
then you know actually spending hours
and hours
uh on Zoom um you know editing the video
overlaying the sound um fixing
components um I think we must have had
about 25 drafts and U 30 final versions
how did you come like you know if you
look at some visual concepts so for
example like you know somebody's missing
the train yeah so how the train comes
into the picture what was the idea you
that
[Music]
[Music]
well and living in a town that Ma I live
in Sharon and for a very long time we
have traveled to the city to uh to do
our jobs uh so the credit for the
concept goes to minaki she came up with
the idea um but I think the origins are
more so what our life is you know
getting up early in the morning getting
ready getting the kids out the door uh
running to get the train and sometimes
you miss it and then you wait for the
second train so that was the concept we
lived in but the message that you know I
think the the song uh wants to
communicate is despite all this you know
we have we have jobs we have kids we are
all doing well but then being able to
make the time yeah that uh brings us joy
that's what's key to life that and
that's the foret we have to make for us
and in some way I think the message of
the band all these 13 years because you
know most of us were uh playing in this
band in our 40s and being able to um you
said 40 you say Teenage well the heart
is still teenage and it's always going
to be teenage I don't think it's it's
growing incrementally there but you know
just say you know it's more like the do
of of life and at that stage uh
we it makes us feel young and that's the
force that we create for ourselves and
for each other what you are describing
when I saw that name and the video came
to my ebox right that's the exactly
first thing came to my mind you know it
was very striking very touching and I'm
so glad that you guys produced this song
and and U and really I want to wish all
the best for this song to thank to to go
you know such for is a word which is
very hard to sort of translate literally
but you know where's the Leisure where's
the spare time to do this but then I
think the message we are saying it find
the forup exactly it's hash findind
forup yeah so now um Before I Let You Go
two more questions I have so first I
want to talk about some of the singers
and players who play the instrument in
this person who they are and what they
are playing yeah yeah uh you know you
know the singers minaki me and anandani
parts in the song uh and then uh the
lead guitarist Samir Bomani here earlier
uh and some of the members who cannot
here today anandani Shaker who actually
plays the the keys she's in India right
now she would be with us then Mike
Grover he plays the bass guitar um he's
been with the band uh more than five six
years at this point and then Kamal Das
who really puts the life with his Beats
in in everything that we do uh he's uh
played the drums and uh so that's six of
us U excellent very good D is is
something that's like really comes from
our hearts if it would not have been an
expression of who we are I don't think
we would have been able to sustain it
this long you know the biggest bands you
know they break and people go their own
ways but the reason we've all stayed
together is because each one of us
resonates with the message the band
brings forth and that is Life's Too
Short let's have fun and because all of
us are sort of um personified versions
of having fun and that brings us all
together as a friend that's that's what
what that key of the secret it's a lot
of
alcohol I can I can agree some
yeah yeah no I mean jokes aside I think
it's really caring for each other I
think there's a high level of care and
bond that each one of us develop uh it's
not just that we uh are great as a team
I think they are individual bonds
between each other to so how the family
Dynamics plays role into this you know
the spouses how how that works uh oh
there's an association of disgruntled
tinch
exper just joking but I think we like to
involve we always try to involve
everybody as you know samir's wife gizm
is she's played a role in the video not
only that we even reach out to our
extended family if you will and we try
to bring in friends our friend vaj thei
has played the lead role there uh and
their extended families so the fact that
we uh we are with each other like a
family more so and we are there for each
other when we need each other in our ups
and downs we're there to celebrate and
dance at each other's special occasions
and we we stand by when somebody's
struggling and having a hard time that's
and we all have that he struggle and
hard time that's you know that's what
keeps us all together excellent well Yi
on that note thank you so much and all
the best for song again it was a
pleasure for us to be here ex and thank
you for hosting us excellent I'm really
I really enjoy talking to you guys and I
just love the
