The Sun is Light!
The Sun is Warmth!
The Sun is Daytime!
All of this is true.
The Sun gives us light, warmth and energy.
And today we'll talk about what the Sun is
and why it is so important for everyone living on the planet Earth,
which means for all of us.
The Sun is a star and it's the closest one to the Earth.
The Sun is huge and very hot.
How huge is it?
Just imagine!
It's 327,000 times bigger than our Earth.
The temperature of its surface is almost 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit
or over 5,000 degrees Celsius.
That's why its warmth can reach the Earth
even though the two are 93 million miles
or 150 million kilometers away from each other.
You think it's a gigantic distance?
Well, the Sun's light travels it in 8 minutes!
Stars, just like people, can be young and old.
Our Sun is middle-aged.
It means it's near the middle of its life cycle,
as scientists believe.
It appeared in the universe around 4.5 billion years ago
and will keep shining for just as long.
Over time, the Sun will get hotter and hotter
and it'll also grow bigger.
In a couple of billion years, it'll become a giant star.
Right now, it's a dwarf star.
