if you want to improve in your staff
fighting skills in your Filipino martial
arts especially the short staff that's
exactly what we're doing today grab a
staff that's going to measure from the
floor to about plexus Heights and do
these drills with me these drills are
all going to be similar to each other
but it's important that we practice them
every single one individually and then
learn to flow them together and you're
going to really love these drills cuz
they're going to be high percentage
movements when you're sparring so for
all these drills we're going to be
working out of the seot grip right here
or the single end sta fighting method
right here and the first drill we're
going to come into an inside umbrella
and then we're going to strike down on
the angle one and we're going to cycle
this
through and get used to lifting up your
elbows and then striking it down right
here all right now with this umbrella
block we want to make sure that the
staff is over our head and we're not
down here we're half of our our skull is
exposed to our opponent's strike we got
to get this up over the head and then
strike it down with power but just get
used to this cycle and get it to flow
nice and
smooth drill two we're working on the
outside umbrella so this time we're
going to have the extended side of the
staff going past our right shoulder
we're going to lift this up to our
outside umbrella again over our head
make sure it's not too low we're
exposing again half of our head to our
opponent strikes get that umbrella all
the way up and then turn it and strike
down the angle two and get this to cycle
through build that
flow and that fluidity within this
combination
now the next four drills we're going to
work some variations on the strikes on
the returning strikes so let's take a
look at three and four we're coming up
on that inside umbrella and this time
we're going to come across on the
horizontal
strike drill number four we're we go the
opposite outside umbrella backhand
horizontal strike now you can change the
elevation of your strikes this might be
going right to the Head level The High
Line this could be going right to the
midline right to the hands or right to
that floating rib or you can bring it
all the way down right across the knees
right but work on that play around with
the different elevations but we want to
get this to flow from the umbrella to
the horizontal strike
and just work on that
flow for drills five and six we're
working on the ascending strikes going
upwards this time so back to the inside
umbrella and this time we're going to
strike it boom coming all the way up on
what we call the angle three so umbrella
angle three
umbrella upward
strike now don't confuse that umbrella
as like an angle four diagonal strike
really emphasize that you're doing an
umbrella here have that intent that
you're protecting yourself and then
quickly boom you can sneak it up now
there's two ways that you can do these
sometimes you need that full power from
the full Arc of the strike other times
you're going to kind of do more of a
Hera which is going to be a very short
uppercut so from here first time the
hand can come all the way down by the
hip and that's when you're really
delivering full power and you have the
timing to do that the other strike is
we're going to keep it the hands are
going to be very close to the ear Boom
and then we're going to sneak it up this
is going to give you more speed for
those moments where you have less time
to apply this uh this tactic this
technique and then from there obviously
you can
follow it up with more powerful shots a
lot of times the speed strikes are there
to Daz the opponent and then we followed
up with the power strikes to end it so
umbrella
to Upward or an angle
three and of course the six drill is the
opposite of that and come to the outside
umbrella and then strike upward on the
backhand ascending strike what we refer
to as the angle four boom
boom boom boom right there so again
umbrella to angle four don't turn this
into an angle three that's a different
intention have the intent on the cover
on the protection and then follow up
with your Counter Strike boom boom
boom once you have these six drills down
individually then it's time to start
adding in some footwork and be creative
here try to be clever explore your
options sometimes you need to move out
or move to one of the sides on the
umbrella and then step in on the attack
on your countering strike other times
you already might be Bridging the
distance going in and you're going to
cover your way in with the umbrella and
then continue that pressure with your
Counter Strike or with your
attack
