Rep. Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen, speaks in favor of his amendment aimed at redirecting Senate Bill 5444. Walsh's proposed amendment aims to address the root issue by focusing on criminals rather than penalizing law-abiding citizens who carry weapons while entering specific designated areas. The majority party refused to adopt the amendment.
a good member from the 19th
representative Walsh thank you madam
speaker one of the issues with the
underlying policy and something we've
seen in previous proposals like it is
that it
restricts and I would even say
punishes law-abiding citizens for
exercising their constitutional rights
what this amendment would
do is it would refocus the underlying
policy
on
criminals it would say that if an
individual with a proven criminal
background a bad
actor violates the restrictions
described in the underlying
policy then that
individual would be appropriately
punished for breaking the law
again Madam speaker this amendment
remedies
an ongoing issue that we
have in our gun control policies in this
state which is that we target law
abiding citizens instead of
criminals in a small way the amendment
says let's focus our public policy on
punishing
criminals they're the ones whose rights
should be
restricted because they
victimized other
people please vote Yes on the amendment
Madam
speaker
