there he is there's my oh look there's
the other
one not going to lie this feels a little
bit
[Music]
strange good morning guys welcome back
to my lot Diaries my name is Emma these
are my allotment Diaries and this is my
allotment plot in South London uh if you
are new to my channel I'd love you to
subscribe because we are going to be
vlogging about everything to do with
allotment gardening over this year today
is the 1st of March happy happy March
don't get too ahead of yourself there
because we still get some quite cold
weather in March but there definitely is
more gardening that we can do in the
month of March um as to what there has
been before basically I hope that makes
some sort of sense um not everything I
say on this channel channel will make
sense but hopefully the gist of it you
will kind of get so because it is the
1st of March technically it's not the
beginning of Spring but I think like
meteor meteor meteor
meteorologically oh my gosh why can't I
say that meteorologically do you know
what I'm trying to say when I say that
Weatherly Weatherly um Weatherly it is
officially kind of spring like from a
science point of view it is now spring
so we are going to do some planting
today because spring equals planting
that's what we do in Spring that's just
how we behave um as gardeners so we are
going to do some planting it's quite
exciting I've got some onion sets to go
in which are quite late um a lot of
people like to put their onions in
December January time I've waited till
March because I think they've never
worked for me I've always done it over
the Autumn winter and overwintered them
and they've never worked so I'm going to
try my luck this year doing it later on
in the year and I think maybe it's to do
with like the bugginess of the soil is
why it wasn't working before but we'll
find out together I've also got some
carrots to go in and I think I brought
something else as well hang on what did
I bring Peas I brought peas with me so
the onions I've got the red
baronss um and they're just onion sets
that I think I picked up from be C or
somewhere and you just put them in
they're like mini Little Onion bulbs so
we'll try those and then I've got the
carrots which are early NS um these are
a fast developing crop basically early
NS grow quite quickly um when I say
quickly I mean like 3 months um so we
got some early NS to go in and then I
also brought some peas um petite provent
provinal can you read that or is that
going to be backwards that'll probably
be backwards to you won't it or anyway
whatever it says it's peas basically
normally what I do is sew my peas in
advance and then put them out but I do
have some guttering maybe I'll just
whack them in the guttering and see how
it goes yeah we'll sew some peas and
some guttering and try and protect it
from mousy mousy right let's get going
with some some jobs then let's just get
stuck in I think that's what we need to
do morning Einstein looking a bit
ominous up there looking a bit ominous
in the
tree coming it's still
[Music]
coming there he is there's my oh look
there's the other one two of
you anyway yeah I found this Tik Tok
account at this guy who feeds robins and
his whole Tik Tok is just feeding Robins
if I can find it I'll link it below but
it just tends to come up on my feed cuz
I watch a lot of Bird videos and stuff
on Tik Tok that's all I do really it's
watch Birds watch Birds in real life
watch Birds on Tik Tok watch Birds on TV
just Birds everywhere in my life yeah he
feeds them like live worms like little
Wiggly ones they're still alive and he
gets them out with sardine tin I just
think oh no I love you Einstein but I
just I just couldn't do that imagine
carrying them in your pocket oh no no no
no
right
I know you'd love it but I just can't do
it Einstein sorry
mate this is where we planted the garlic
um and so this is where the onions are
going to go as well actually I didn't
realize that you have to cover garlic
and onion because there's some kind of
bug that comes and eats it I mean it's a
bug for everything there always a bug
for everything but it's quite good that
I've got these hoops up so what I'll do
is I will I actually oh I left the I
brought some more fleece stuff to go
over and I left it at home so what I'll
do is I'll plant them today next time I
come down I'll cover it cover it with
like a fleece or like a netting or
something um just to stop the onion and
garlic bug whatever bug that is it's
some kind of bug so we're going to whack
in the red onion
[Music]
here L of that tree above seems to fall
in here but I think it's I think it's
all right weeds are growing so I'm sure
onions can grow weeds can grow right
okay let's do
this I think it's easier to make a
row onions I shouldn't do it that way
actually I change my mind immediately
change my mind that's okay no damage
done we'll do the lines this way that
way the thing I do know about onions and
garlic is that they don't like to sit in
moisture they don't like to sit in boggy
conditions and this has got like freshh
layer of compost over it so I think it
should be happy here and if it's not I
can just write it a questionnaire and
ask it to fill it out and let me know
what I can do different cuz these plants
right they've got to start helping me
out a little bit you know I can't keep
guessing what they need they've got to
help me
out
wow it's a lot of onions to kill
50
one two three four five yeah five per
[Music]
row so there are my onion sets all in
their neat little rows and just poking
out of the soil I'm just going to cover
it just a little bit do it like that and
have the top just sticking out a bit
just like
[Music]
that right I think I've SE
35 I think there's 35 there that seems
like quite a lot of onions doesn't it I
feel like nobody needs 35 onions in
their life do you know what I mean if
they all grew I think that' be a lot but
then you have to do the gardening Mass
you know the gardener Mass which is 10na
die 10 to get pulled up and eaten by
something or other 10 will probably get
some kind of fungal infection two your
accidentally forgets there and step on
it two will get you know destroyed by a
storm and then that's one onion so out
of 35 we've grown one onion hopefully
fingers crossed and that's if you're
lucky so you've always got to do The
Gardener's maths you know 35 equals
about
[Music]
one
[Music]
right so that's the red onions in um
with lots over for when we destroy it I
want to put in the carrots now but I
just want to double check on this bed
here cuz this is where we planted the
parsnips and all the the other malake
the spinach and the beach rat and I want
to see if anything's coming up um which
is very very early it would be insane if
it was but I also want to make sure that
it's not been dug out or anything the CL
has stayed on we had some really really
windy weather the other day but luckily
the CL has stayed on which is excellent
news um we do need this on just to stop
things digging in and also to stop the
frost we've had some Frosty nights as
well so let's have a look I highly doubt
we've got anything at all germinating
yet no no no I don't think so but I do
think nothing's dug in here and
everything looks pretty good to be
honest everything's looking
good
terrible awful ridiculous doesn't work
at
all you
go I have to admit I was also having a
sneaky look to see if I could put a row
of carrots in there but I don't think I
can I don't think I can so what I'm
going to do is I think I'm going to put
the carrots here potatoes have been here
and what potatoes do is they kind of
help with the structure of the soil they
like break it up a little bit and stuff
and put goodness in into the soil some
people disagree with that whenever I say
that there are people who come on and
say oh no that's not true but I've had
potatoes here a few times and if that is
true then this will be a very good bed
for carrots because it would would have
really broken up the structure of the
soil it's also been topped up recently
as well with some fresh
[Music]
compost
what we'll do is we'll succession sew
them so we'll do two rows now and in
about 3 weeks time we'll do another two
rows behind it providing that Row's not
been eaten so we're we're we're planting
the early
NS early NS
[Music]
[Music]
too
[Music]
so that's two rows of carrots in there
at the front and then what we'll do is
we'll succession sew them so I've left
some room at the back in 3 weeks time
hopefully fingers crossed when these
start to come up our succession so two
more rows there and we'll have
continuous carrots but I think I do need
some slug protection down always good to
get the protection in early I've ordered
some stro stro I live by stro I
absolutely love stuff so I've ordered
some it's coming Thursday and I'll be
able to put it all down right
[Music]
peace
right so just to explain just in case
you're sitting here watching going what
an earth is she doing putting soil into
guttering the idea is that you sew peas
into guttering like this like a long
piece of guttering I actually sew the
seeds into here and so the roots develop
in here and then when we come to plant
them out it's basically a continuous row
that we just sort of like shift into the
soil apparently it's really really
effective the only reason I'm doing it
is cuz I think I'll be able to protect
it from mice which like to dig up my pea
seeds um so I'm going to sew them in
here and try and protect them and then
transfer them into the garden wherever
they're going to go maybe over the
archway or something I haven't decided
yet but we're going to whack our pea
seeds into this I'll let you know if it
works or not so not going to lie this
feels a little bit strange but I've
always wanted to do this properly and I
think this is the year so we just put
some little holes in isn't it strange
that to get peas you actually put peas
into the ground isn't that weird I say
that every
year isn't it
[Music]
weird I have plenty more seeds if these
don't work so it's all good don't worry
guys if you don't
grow Don't Panic you w't let me down
you've let yourself down but you haven't
let me
down anyway that's worse isn't it
right just close them all
up what's he up to it's far too big for
my plot no no no mate this is a little
plot this is
Robin's yeah look Einstein's look he's
looking he's like what are you doing
here this is my
space god he's massive isn't he is he
going to cause me a problem
I think that walk says it all yes he is
look at him swaggering around like he
owns the
place right the only thing I can think
to protect these from um the mousy mousy
is to use some netting I still think it
might get in but I think it's better to
put it on than to not put anything on at
all do you know what I mean so yeah
we'll just put some netting over it wrap
it around bit like a duvet cover you
[Music]
knowne right so we've wrapped The
netting right around it I'm hoping that
that would keep the mous mouses out mice
out um because I know they can get
through really small things they might
still be able to get in there but
hopefully it will just deter H them a
little bit maybe they'll get one or two
and hopefully just sort give up and
think nah there's better things to eat
but anyway it's all in the in the uh
guttering now and we'll see how these
peas play out I'll let you
know I'm just going to fleece the
carrots this is as good good of fleece
as I've got it's all broken and torn and
stuff it's all I've got but I need to
put sunning over it cuz I think we are
going to get some Frosty nights so you
do need to keep fleecing everything if
you can let's whack this over the
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
top I think it's just one of those
things that it doesn't look great but at
least it will keep the frost off I'll
get a new one um and then I can replace
it and make it look better but at least
it won't get Frosty and they they won't
just all die best to keep them alive if
I can I think that's sort of the
attitude I'm going to go into this year
that it's better better to keep it alive
and for it not to look perfect than to
try and make it look good but everything
dies you know always probably should
have been my motto from the start to be
honest when was that not my
motto
[Music]
well I hope you enjoyed this little
spring edition of my alotment gardening
Journey we planted lots and lots out now
I think direct planting is the way I'm
going to go this year as much as I can
is going to go directly into my plot
just because I don't have the room at
home and also it's just I don't know I
just feel like planting into stuff this
year it's just how I feel um the
wildlife area I will continue with next
time I hope you've enjoyed the Vlog
today if you have subscribed to my
channel and I will see you again next
week have a lovely gardening weekend see
you next week guys bye
