Hello, this is Vek. Welcome to my channel and thank you for viewing my videos.
Today I'm in the beautiful country of Greece and I'm visiting the second
largest city of Greece. I'm in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki
in northern Greece. In this particular video we're going to visit one of the
most important archaeological museums in Europe.
This is the archaeological museum of Thessaloniki.
So let's go for a walk inside the museum and let's
enjoy these spectacular exhibits. This is Vek.
Let's go for a walk. We have so much to see, to enjoy and to learn.
Let's do it. And here's a quick view of the exterior
of the archaeological museum here in the city of Thessaloniki in northern
Greece. It was built in the 1960s in order to
house the archaeological treasures found
in northern Greece and mainly in Macedonia which is of course part of
Greece. I'm about 300 meters directly behind
the main landmark of Thessaloniki. The beautiful white
tower and the exhibition grounds of Thessaloniki
are to my left. So let's go inside this world-renowned museum. Let's enjoy
the treasures that are exhibited. The ticket will cost us
eight euros and we're going to have a great time
and a lot to learn and a lot to see and to admire.
Come on, let's do it. There are many parts to this fascinating museum
but we're going to start here where the most important
exhibits are displayed at from the Derveni tombs. We're going to start
from this vase right here. And here's a view of the magnificent and
world-famous Derveni vase of about a meter
and 20 centimeters of height made in the fourth century before
Christ and it was discovered in 1962 in five tombs
in the area of Derveni here in Thessaloniki. That's the name.
And look at the detail on this magnificent object.
If there is a single object that you should see in this
magnificent museum it's this one. It was used to mix water and
wine and it was found in one of the five tombs
that were discovered in 1962. Absolutely magnificent.
One of the most magnificent vases, Greek vases,
that you will see anywhere in the world because there are thousands and
thousands of vases displayed, Greek vases, all around the world but
this one tops them all. The Derveni
vase. Magnificent. And after that stunning vase that we just
saw, let's look at some more items from the
Derveni tombs. Here's a golden wreath, a myrtle golden wreath. The beauty
of this particular object. Beautiful, isn't it?
Absolutely stunning. And next to the vase we find
more items from the Derveni tombs. And look at this huge display here
that requires a special look. Here we see
silver plates and cups and a variety of items made out
of silver. These things on the bottom that you see
are stone vases that once contained
perfumes, clay, items for the table.
Here's a glass cup right there. And the most remarkable object, of
course, is the wreath. Another wreath right there.
And this one we can see very beautifully from the top.
You can see the detail and the jewelry below it. Here is the whole display
of priceless items, ancient items. And here is another
display that requires special attention from the Derveni
tombs. And here at one end we find beautiful bronze
vessels, water jugs, cups, perfume containers right in the middle
of the frame. Two swords right there. Here's
a board game and more bronze items here on this side.
In perfect shape, all of them. And they are
two and a half thousand years old. These two items that you see here were
worn by a soldier to protect the lower part
of his legs during battle.
And here we see some jewelry discovered in a lady's tomb
from the 6th century before Christ, from Sintos. Look at that beautiful
necklace right there. Magnificent.
And here is an absolutely stunning golden wreath from the 4th century
before Christ. Look at this absolutely beautiful
object here at the museum. The hundreds of leaves and flowers on it.
In order to appreciate the beauty of this item we need to
get down to the floor here and look at it from below
and from above and from the side as well. This is absolutely
incredible. Keep in mind this is from the 4th century before Christ.
Well we saw the fascinating Derveni exhibit. Now let's move on to
another part of the museum where we can
visit the most important displays of statues and mosaics.
Let's go this way. And here is a beautiful marble statue of Dionysus,
the god of wine from the 2nd century after Christ.
The hair is decorated with a beautiful elaborate hairstyle as you can see there.
And here is a beautiful detail from a marble sarcophagus from the 2nd century
after Christ. Look at the detail here showing
young men. Look how beautifully carved this marble sarcophagus is and the
detail on it. And here is a beautiful statue of a young
Greek man holding an amphora. This statue is from the 1st century
after Christ and it was most likely used as
part of a fountain in a wealthy home. You can see the hole here on the amphora
that he's holding. Water was coming out onto a fountain at
one point in time when this statue was first
installed at a wealthy home. It's a beautiful statue. Look at the detail
here. And here is a beautiful marble tombstone
from the 5th century before Christ. It is about a meter and a half in height
and it shows a young Greek woman holding a dove right there.
You can spend quite a bit of time here in this beautiful museum looking
at the different tombstones displayed. They're all very very interesting and
fascinating. And here's a marble portrait from the
2nd century after Christ made out of beautiful white marble
quite possibly of Alexander the Great. Now this
statue here that you see resembles very much the statue of Alexander the
Great in the British Museum in London. You can find a video
about that particular statue on my channel.
This one that you see here is very very similar
to the one in London. And here's an absolutely beautiful door
to a Macedonian tomb from the 4th century before Christ.
This door that you see here is about two meters
in height and it was the entrance to a tomb of over six and a half meters
in length with two chambers. This door is made out of pure
white marble with copper decorations as you can see here.
Now a lot of historians believe that glass
was invented by the Romans but here in this museum in Thessaloniki
in this exhibit we find glass vases and necklaces
that date from the 6th century before Christ.
And here's a bronze helmet from the 6th century before Christ
in perfect shape here at the museum. And here we find
jewelry from the tomb of a wealthy woman from the 2nd century before Christ
and some more items from the same tomb. Look at this beautiful jewelry
and the detail especially of the earrings on the left
and on the right side of the frame. Here is a collection of clay figurines of
female figures. All these figurines that you see here date
from the 4th to the 5th century before Christ.
And here's another beautiful display of clay figurines. This one includes
figurines from the 3rd and 2nd century before Christ.
And how beautiful these ones are here. Look at the detail on some of them.
And finally guys let's come down to the courtyard of this beautiful museum here
in Thessaloniki. Here is the courtyard and before we leave
we must visit this beautiful exhibit here of sarcophagi
from around Greece. Look at this beautiful one here with all the detail.
In another museum this sarcophagus here would be placed on the very first floor
and would be the main exhibit. But here they're placed
in the courtyard. They're absolutely beautiful. So before you leave
make sure you come down here and you visit this space here.
This is Vic. Thank you for joining me all the way from Thessaloniki.
This was the archaeological museum visited on a very rainy day
but we enjoyed the visit. Nevertheless, bye-bye.
