In this video, Paul covers 8 deadly strikes from Panantukan, an empty-hand style of martial arts from the Philippines. Panantukan is one term that represents the empty hand striking techniques of Filipino Martial Arts. These empty-hand techniques are taken directly from the movements of the weapons.
though they have some of the most
incredible systems and styles the
Southeast Asian martial arts are some of
the most unrecognized martial arts
around the world and is where I spent
most of my martial arts career guess you
could say in study and practice martial
arts systems like sea lot which are more
of the Malay and Indonesian Styles and
systems and styles like Kali Arnis
escrima which come from the Philippines
in my personal biased opinion I think
that more people should learn about
these arts and practice these Arts not
just to keep them alive but to keep
these Arts growing and thriving in this
video I want to share with you eight
devastating empty-hand strikes that come
from ponentuken which is one of the
empty hand systems of Filipino martial
arts I've done a video in the past on
some of the most devastating empty hand
striking techniques of sea lot which I
will link in the description and down in
the comments and you can check out that
video right after this one to compare
both the similarities and differences
between sea lots and ponentuken in the
Philippines there's a lot of different
dialects and within Filipino martial
arts there's a lot of different names
for different subcategories of the art I
mean just the general names of Kali
escrima Arnis are three completely
different names however they're all
basically talking about the same thing
now the Filipino martial arts are
primarily weapon arts and the empty hand
strikes of panetukin are based off of
weapon movements and there's two
categories of weapons that all these
techniques are based off of number one
is The Edge weapons either a sword or a
knife and these techniques are going to
be taken from both The Cutting patterns
and the thrusting patterns of the edge
weapons and the second category of
weapons that these empty hand strikes
come off of is the impact weapons such
as a stick let's go over to Bob so we
can learn and demonstrate these eight
devastating empty hand techniques of
Pawn and toucan or Filipino martial arts
our first pawn and two can striking
technique is the hammer fist we're going
to close a fist strike with the bottom
of the hand these strikes can come from
the forehand side or the backhand side
they can come down on the diagonal lines
on the vertical lines or even on the
horizontal lines the technique of the
hammer fist is taken directly off of the
impact weapon because again we have the
forehand backhand strikes on the
diagonal we can strike on the vertical
and we can strike on the horizontal as
you can see the pattern of the hammer
fists comes right from the pattern of
the weapons here
with very little training you can learn
to develop an immense amount of Power
with the hammer Fists
[Applause]
now a bonus with the hammer fists is
there's a little bit lesser known way to
apply this technique which as you
experience you'll be able to utilize the
same principle with all the different
striking techniques and that is a
spinning Hammer fist
foreign
is used quite often in the Filipino
martial art known as yayan which
translates to Dance of Death yaw Yan is
a sport orientated version of the
Pontoon or the Filipino martial arts you
can go ahead and research on your own on
YouTube and go check out a bunch of
knockout videos of the spinning back
Fist from yayan they're pretty
incredible our second striking technique
is just like most of the other striking
martial arts out there is our punches
and we have our straight punches and we
have our rounding punches or arcing or
curving punches like our Hooks and our
uppercuts now the punching techniques of
pontotukin come directly from the
thrusting techniques of the edged weapon
right here both The Sword and the knife
so as you can see
they mimic the exact same motions as the
thrusts
foreign
the third empty hand strike of panitukin
is the back fist bam right there and
we're striking with these top Knuckles
right here kind of like the edge right
there that top Edge the back fist Works
more as a flicking type of motion just
like if I had the sword or the knife we
can flick what we call a top Edge
because our swords have a top Edge right
here we flick that out into the opponent
and make contact with that same thing
with the knife even on the impact weapon
right we can flick that top corner right
here and when you hit somebody with that
it actually does a lot of damage it's a
pretty deceptive strike but we can take
that same exact motion from the weapon
and apply it to our empty hands
the sneaky thing about the back fists is
that they can move around the guards and
attacks of your opponent and come in at
more unorthodox angles that your
opponent is least expecting
foreign
[Applause]
number four is the form hacks we're
using the outside of the forearm right
here and we can strike again on the
forehand side on the backhand side we
can come down on the vertical we can
even come across on the horizontal if we
look at how this technique is taken from
the weapons we're using more of the
middle of the blade to hack in to our
opponent and these strikes are really
good for closing that distance from long
range into what we call short range or
quarto we get very close
um because we're coming in behind the
protection of the weapon at full speed
full force
and in Weaponry we have What's called
the strong of the weapon and the weak of
the weapon and we can use the strong of
a weapon to knock our opponent's weapon
offline opening up a pathway to get in
close and finish the fight quickly and
same thing with the forearm strikes we
can use them to strike away all of our
opponents attacks as we are closing in
that distance with speed aggression
power and with coverage
Zoo
[Applause]
in pontotukin will also strike with the
Open Hands and we have that slap or also
known as the Palm strike when we slap
this is taken from the cutting energy of
the weapon
when we Palm this is taken from the
thrusting energy
and the slaps do a really good job at
dispersing energy or power into the
opponent
okay
our sixth empty hand technique of
pontotukin is the finger jab or the eye
jab this is where we're taking the pads
of the fingers right here and we're
going to flick them and go right for the
opponent's eyes sometimes you can even
go for other soft targets of the body
like the throat
again this is like taking the point of
the knife and flicking that right to the
opponent's eyes this one has a little
bit of controversy around it because
what happens if you flick and you end up
hitting their forehead and you know
breaking your fingers well if you have
the proper techniques then you will not
break your fingers and as you're
training this one you have to make sure
you're wearing some eye protection
because believe it or not in training
the fingers somehow just kind of find
their way to the eyes and that may have
to do with the way that the eye area of
the face is designed and as you target
right to the top of that cheekbone even
when they close their eyes your finger
slides up opens the eyes goes underneath
the eyelid and finds its way into the
eyes be careful when you're training
this one with a partner wear some eye
protection
foreign
watching some pro wrestling when I was a
little kid and you had the whole
clothesliner right there yeah we have
the exact same striking technique in
pontantouken we call that the inside
form again taken from the weapon
typically this is done if you miss a
Thrust or you're in close and you want
to bring the opponent in maybe you don't
want to like thrust this person and
permanently terminate them but you just
want to kind of subdue the person maybe
you need to control it or what then you
can kind of come around it kind of hooks
them stops their ability to get away
from you so that way you can pull them
in to more grappling or close quarter
striking same thing in the empty hand
version we come across with that
clothesline and a lot of times this
strike is yes very devastating on its
own and it can absolutely cause a
knockout but a lot of times this strike
is used to transition from striking into
the grappling
Filipino martial arts known as Doom hog
foreign
last but not least but probably the most
devastating strike that you can deliver
with the arm is the elbow in the
Weaponry of Kali this is where you're
striking with the punyo end of the
weapon now in panitukin when we're
utilizing the empty hands we typically
want to keep the hand in an open
position because that exposes more of
the bone as when we close and tighten it
it contracts the muscle which wraps
around a little bit more of the bone not
the end of the world still going to be
effective this is just gonna bury that
blade Edge in a little bit better when
the hand is open and just like pretty
much all of our other strikes beautiful
thing about elbows is that we can rain
them down from multiple different angles
we can strike on the diagonal downward
and upwards we can come downward on the
vertical in different ways and we can
even come across on the horizontals
forehanded backhands as well
thank you
thank you
again like all the other strikes pretty
effective whether you are striking to
the face or you're striking digging your
elbows into the body
