The French built the strongest line of defense in the world
Maginot Line
It was used to defend against the German attack
But France was still crushed by the Germans in 42 days
The Maginot Line, on the other hand, remained intact
It also became a joke all over the world
Who exactly does this line of defense defend?
And what prompted the French to build it?
Let's take a plate of this film

The French built the strongest defensive line in the world the Maginot Line to defend
against German attacks but France was still defeated by the German army in 42 days
Yet the Maginot Line remained intact and became a joke around the world Who exactly was this line defending and what prompted the French to build it
This video we take a look at the glory and downfall of the Maginot Line
On the morning of November 11 1918 Germany
signed an armistice with the Allies
After experiencing four years of terrible warfare including the battles of Verdun and the Marne the country lost a million people
After seven provinces were destroyed although France became the victor it still feared Germany's resurgence
To prevent such a situation from happening again German military leaders and politicians began to plan for the construction of defensive fortifications on the Eastern Front
The then French Prime Minister Clemenceau was the first to propose protecting the borders
In March 1919 in an office of the French Army headquarters three high-ranking officials fiercely argued over the direction of the French military
General Foch's defensive strategy would only result in more French children losing their lives only a bold attack would be a permanent solution
General Joseph's wife laughed at this
If you still think of them as children you shouldn't send the people to the front lines
Can they be stronger than reinforced concrete Large-scale defensive structures are the ultimate defense strategy
Being made a commander isn't a large defensive structure expensive As long as it's sufficient it's fine Why do you have to have that damn large project
The people's money is never as much as a child's so the Territorial Defense Committee was established in May 1922 to reach a consensus among the three elders
The defense system became a topic of conversation among the French people in their spare time
On December 28 1929 the Defense Committee decided to adopt the advice of the Marshal
The Maginot Line begins preparations War Minister Andre Maginot enthusiastically announces
We established the defensive boundary for one purpose: to eliminate future threats and the concrete structure is stronger than a soldier's chest protection
We can only stand ready to prevent war
Marek tried to get both chambers of the parliament to fund the construction of the line and for the first time received nearly 5 billion old francs
At this time the French people began to look upon this impenetrable shield with hope believing it would protect them from the German cavalry forever
So how strong was the Maginot Line the massive defense system built by France that made the French feel safe
In 1930 the Maginot Line officially began construction consisting of a series of fortifications known as "garnison groups" that formed its various sections
In short the group of formulas is essentially an automated defense system composed of cover and turrets for a single entity connected to each other through underground passages
The entire Maginot Line stretched 430 kilometers from the northeastern border of France towards the southeast ending at the Alpine border
Covering Savoie Dauphine and the French Riviera
It extends all the way to the town of Menton and even includes part of the island of Corsica with more than 130 forts of various sizes in the Alpine region
Some of them can accommodate a line of more than 200 people and the formation is equipped with mobile turrets which are prepared with anti-tank guns and howitzers
The second phase involved building defensive fortifications in the northeast stretching from Flanders to the Swiss border
The largest defensive structure in the Maginot Line is the Hakenberg Forts in the Moselle region
It consists of 19 combat zones and 10 kilometers of underground tunnels covering an area of 1.6 square kilometers
Each battery is equipped with a mobile anti-tank gun that has a range of up to 20 kilometers in all directions
The fortress has an intricate network of tunnels that connect its various key points
All channels are equipped with a compressed air ventilation system to prevent the castle from being contaminated by asphyxiating gases
The narrow-gauge electric train designed inside can temporarily transport soldiers' ammunition and food to the battery
Fortress units are typically composed of infantry artillery and engineers consisting of approximately 1000 soldiers
The war will be divided into three groups rotating every eight hours
A single fortress's cafeteria would likely store enough food for one month providing soldiers with two meals a day
Because it was designed based on data from the Battle of Verdun the amount of ammunition it stores internally is extremely large
These human-centered designs are primarily intended to enable soldiers to fight more effectively
According to the data a combat group can carry out continuous defense for several weeks without supplies
However the French were not only defending against Germany on a physical level but also on a psychological one
They also built the Maginot Line to convince the Germans that the Maginot Line was impregnable and they started construction of the line at the same time
The media spread various exaggerated messages
For example the Maginot Line stretched from the English Channel to the Swiss border and had 50 million fortifications
The Maginot Line had 10 layers and was deep as a kilometer and in short these smoke bombs were more magical than some science fiction movies
Under such reports and publicity the Maginot Line was successfully portrayed as an impregnable fortress
They eventually convinced the vast majority of the French people that this line of defense was impregnable that the Germans could never break through
But the illusion would eventually be shattered
In May 1939 Germany's armored groups executed the Ardennes plan
The British evacuation from Dunkirk was successful and the French were thoroughly awakened
The Maginot Line could not protect France and the French military high command's generals were also panicked
But at this critical moment one person stepped forward: the newly appointed French commander Maxime Weygand
Order the start of building a new line of defense a flesh and blood line of defense to protect the French people and the Maginot Line
At that time Wei Gang ordered the French army to establish a defensive line between the Somme and Aisne rivers
But at this point the French elite forces had suffered a major defeat and the remaining 71 divisions were poorly equipped
It would be almost impossible to hold back the Germans' overwhelming offensive without air support
Moreover after the Germans captured northern France the A and B army groups prepared
to break through the Weygand line the B army group occupied the French capital Paris
The A Army Group advanced behind the Maginot Line and in coordination with the C Army Group attacking from the front occupied the Maginot Line as a French force
On June 5th the German forces began their attack on the Somme
To the surprise of the German forces the armored units did not make smooth progress over the next three days they found the French forces completely different from those of the previous days
This was mainly because the French army was now fighting a desperate battle and these soldiers were veteran troops withdrawn from the north
Their logistics were well-equipped and supplemented with tanks and equipment and their morale was high having become accustomed to the German attack methods
At this time Wei Gang re-established the First and Second Armored Divisions providing fresh blood for de Gaulle's Fourth Armored Division
Then implement the hedgehog tactic and execute the deep defense operation and delay tactics
The troops were stationed in villages and cities of all sizes and also had defensive fortifications set up around them in all directions
This move successfully deepened the French defensive depth
The French forces defended their positions at all costs inflicting heavy losses on the German army such as the German Army Group B at that time
Their 47 divisions have a large mobile force
But in the 48 hours before the attack there was no breakthrough at all so the German army had to rely on the air force
After the German Air Force deployed bombers to destroy a large number of French artillery pieces the French Air Force also began to operate frequently
500 bombing missions were completed between June 5th and 10th
But because of this they suffered heavy losses and could not be replenished soon the Germans completely gained air superiority and the French positions and armored units were subjected to fierce bombing
The vanguard of the French Tenth Army located south of Abbeville was crushed and forced to retreat along the Seine towards Rouen and the south
The German army finally crossed the river and resumed its rapid advance
After this battle the French army could no longer organize a large-scale operation and the fall of the Maginot Line was now inevitable
In fact even before the front line was still resisting the German forces
The German Army Group C located to the east of France attempted to break through the Maginot Line but the attempt failed at the northernmost end of the Maginot Line
The German forces launched an eight-hour offensive resulting in 46 of their own killed and 251 wounded
But the French army only lost two men it must be said that the Maginot Line was indeed solid
After the initial defensive line was breached Guderian's 19th Army rushed toward the French-Swiss border preparing to encircle the French forces in the Forêt de l'Argonne
The German 16th Army attacked the weak rear of the Maginot Line from the west to capture Verdun Toul and Metz
When the German Army Group B began its attack on Paris and Normandy Army Group A also launched an attack on the rear of the Maginot Line
On June 15th Army Group C launched Operation Tiger across the Rhine River to attack France
As the German army began its attack the French people's morale had already collapsed although their equipment was still excellent their minds were only thinking about how to escape from the Maginot Line
Only a few French troops remained holding the line
The First Army of the Germans bombarded the French positions with 1000 various artillery pieces
However most of the German artillery were relics from World War I and could not penetrate the thick armor of the Maginot Line
Only 16 88-mm guns could shake the fortress
To further support the offensive Germany also deployed 150mm guns and eight railway guns while assembling the Fifth Air Force for aerial support
But progress remains slow The remaining French forces
inside the Maginot Line launched an unrelenting counterattack
The city of Sorel-En-Brie fired 15 802 75-millimeter shells at German infantry
It was also the French position that came under the most German artillery fire yet its thick defenses prevented its destruction
On the same day the Germans launched Operation Tiger they also initiated Operation Bear the Seventh Army's five assault divisions had 400 artillery pieces
They crossed the Rhine River into the Colmar area and advanced toward the Vosges Mountains
On June 17 German forces pushed the French 104th and 105th Divisions into the Forêt de Parc while also advancing into Strasbourg
On the same day General Guderian's 19th Army reached the Swiss border cutting off the Maginot Line from the rest of France
Most French troops surrendered on June 25 and the German forces announced they had captured 500 000 prisoners
The French government fled to Bordeaux a week ago and Paris had already fallen three days earlier The German forces had also begun urging surrender
But some of the main fortresses of the French Maginot Line continued to fight until July 10th
The last of the French forces surrendered at the request of Alphonse Georges
According to statistics out of the 58 main fortresses on the Maginot Line only 10 were captured by the Germans during combat
The rest was all captured after the French army surrendered
This shows that the Maginot Line itself was very strong so what was the reason for the Maginot Line's collapse
The collapse of the Maginot Line was crushed by the French army's rigid and outdated thinking
Behind this line represented an outdated military theory
The war is primarily based on infantry attacks
It still requires breaking through strong fortifications and then advancing slowly
This completely ignores the strategic depth defense and only focuses on defending infantry
The idea of ignoring the threat of tanks is the root of the Maginot Line's collapse
When the German armored tide surged forward France's depth could not withstand the impact of mechanized forces
French forces used tanks as auxiliary support for infantry
The French military leadership did not step out of the circle of victory from World War I treating the airplane as a tool to extend the range of artillery on the Maginot Line
Bringing conservative ideas to World War II led to the joke of the Maginot Line
Would the Germans still be able to take France in 42 days if the Maginot Line were extended to the English Channel
