In Pencak Silat, there is a technique called Sempok. In this video, Paul shows the real application as this question comes up frequently in the comments on the Silat videos. Learn the difference between conditioning exercises and real-world street fighting applications!
hey my friends I got some great
questions about the application of
simpak from silat martial arts I want to
go ahead and address this in this video
I don't do too many uh application
videos like this on uh this channel here
but because it was kind of a frequently
Asked question I want to go ahead and
answer it there so I got my buddy Kevin
we're out here hiking and training
working out doing some animal locomotive
movements and stuff and um like let's go
ahead and uh do some sempak application
as well so hit the Thumbs Up Button make
sure subscribe to Marshall Flex if you
like this type of stuff and let's get to
it
when it comes to sempak a lot of times
what people Envision is that we're going
to be doing this full you know sitting
down application thing in a in a fight
and maybe that is true but for the most
part no this is conditioning right where
we're working in building strength in
our hips flexibility in our hips so that
way we can develop a full range of
motion which will give us optimal
mobility and at the same time allow us
to deliver more speed and more power in
our techniques that's why we
do that yes there could be application
but most of the time when we're looking
at simpak that's like let's take a look
at what it actually is sempoc means to
cross behind so basically all it is is
just going to be a cross step behind
okay and I can stay upright I can drop
this down or like in the exercise right
I can come as as low as the ground
why would we do why would we use sempoc
what's the situation for this so say
Kevin is throwing a punch right at my
face and I can send POC back right out
of the way to avoid that strike right
I'm just evading his attack at the same
time I can still hit him
right that's kind of the main idea right
there I may have to sempoc to the side
I'm a senpac diagonally backwards I
might have the Sim pop straight back
kind of depends on the environment you
know I might have to simpak the other
way
let's take a look at like what happens
if Kevin attacks by combination because
most of the time that's how people are
going to attack you might throw a 1-2
like a jab cross right
instead of me moving back like this
where I'm Shuffling back right I don't
have any momentum to carry me forward
and when we're shuffling back it's very
hard to change elevations in a fluid way
where I can immediately get back into my
attack
but if I simpak and he goes into this
attack and I could drop myself lower now
that liver is wide open and then because
I have that hip strength that hip
flexibility that Mobility I can more
easily come up with more speed and more
power in my countering attacks okay
that's the true application the real
application of senpa right so that's all
it is it's just cross stepping behind
boom and then I can come up
and come into the strikes
Deepak right that's kind of the sister
to sempak sempak is when we cross that
behind Deepak is when we cross step in
front so we can also take a look at
Deepak I can see right the the strike
the attack is telegraphed more and I can
see that it's coming so I'm going to
cross step in front here okay
and that allows me to gain more entry
right here so we turn it around and then
we can see what's going on on the other
side of it right here I'm cross stepping
in so it's not quite I'm not quite going
in a reverse triangle I'm kind of almost
going forward kind of merging with them
as I'm cross stepping in right and this
elbow is coming across smashing them in
the back of the ear that's exposing the
nape of the neck boom where I can drop
this all right this brings us into
classic
foot sweeps right we can go into sapoos
if I'm in front I have my facets all
kinds of great sweeping or throwing
techniques because we used Deepak to get
into that position right so that's just
a quick little rundown or example in
application use of sempak so hopefully
that answers your questions when you sit
all the way to the ground
that's a conditioning exercise maybe you
have to use it you know in a application
type of way but for the most part that's
a conditioning exercise to give you the
mobility which will then transfer into
the speed and the power in your counters
and follow-ups
once again if you like this video and
you find this video to be helpful hit
the Thumbs Up Button let me know down in
the comments what do you think of sempak
is this a technique that maybe you've
used before in like some sparring and
some training or what and make sure you
subscribe to the channel here for more
and Kevin and I we're going to get back
to our Mobility work and all that that
we're working on today and while we're
enjoying this amazing beautiful scenery
out here on the hike all right thanks so
much we'll see you next time
all right
