Wood carving: Tips and Tools

Okay, now we're about ready to cut the hair. I want to show you something. I kind of came
back and rounded this up just a little bit more and redrew that line. Now when you cut
the hair, you got to watch out for which way the grain goes. Just remember anytime you're
going downhill, you're with the grain. Uphill, you're against it. So what that means is,
if I start this out, I'm going to have to come back here and cut like that downhill.
Then I'm going to have to turn it around. Now, the thing I want you to remember is you
got to make a smooth S-curve. Don't go this way and this way and this way. It looks bad.
And we just kind of come around here, like so. Kind of keep a nice smooth curve. Coming
around. You don't have to follow it exactly. Coming around a little more and then ease
up out of the wood so that you have a shallow tail, like that. There we go. That's the first
hair. Now I'm going to come back and start another one. Kind of follow the same curve
coming off the top of the head. Now I need to go a little more downhill here. Notice
I make them pretty big and then I kind of taper them as I go out, which means they're
not quite as deep. Now I'm going to kind of come here. Let him come up. Might even
put another little tail up, like that. And then ease him out of the wood so it leaves
that little long tail I kind of like that. Right there. Now see I've got this area in
here and I can come back and I can put another one. You want to make sure you kind of come
around the corner and make that smooth. Now I won't bring it out as far as I did the other
one. That breaks it up a little bit and adds a little bit to it. I can kind of come right
here and stop it. And then I'm going to come around the whole face this way. Now I'm not
going to do all the hair on this video, but I'm going to do enough of them to kind of
show you how to do it. Okay. And I'm going to let this one start laying back. Now as
you come down the face, like that, and kind of lay back like that. As you come down the
face, you're going to start, you're going to be going straight up and then you're going
to be, let me just draw it in here. You're going to be kind of coming at it, start, put
it at an angle like so. As you come down until you're angling back down by the time you get
down in here. Okay. So you've got to keep that in mind. Now you could just kind of come
down here and put some wide and then come back and do the ones in between them later
if you want to. I might let that just turn up. Now see I've turned these down, I've turned
one up and vary that. That gives you some variety and makes things look even better
if you do it that way. And see I'm keeping that one shallow so that I can bring it all
the way back down if I want to. Now you could come right in here actually and put just a
short one in like that. And here again, the more you do that, the more you can add some
variety to it. You don't want all your hairs the same length. You don't want them to curve
the same. You want it, you want things to be a little different. I'm going to come right
here. Be very careful when you're coming back to the head here. Turn him a little more down
so that I can come back in between there and put another one in there.
Now I'll probably put two in between them even. And you just want to, you don't want
them to all be the same. You want them to vary like so. Come in here maybe, put another
one in there. See I can actually come right here and put one if I want to like that.
Let this one turn down even. I don't like the way I did that one. I kind of got too
close to the other one, but that's all right. I'll fix it in a little bit. And you just
come around doing all your hair like this. And of course after you've done them a while,
it'll kind of become natural to you. See? Come around and do that all the way.
Down here, put one down. Let this one go way down maybe. Turn, come out. If you don't like
the way it looks, you can come back and recut it a little bit and fix it. Come back here
and just kind of finish that off right there. Finish that knot right there. And be careful
when you get up towards the face so that you don't cut into it. All right, there we go.
You just come. I'll make this a little bigger. I narrowed him up a little too quick,
so I can fix that. I'll come in here maybe and put a short one like that.
Okay, and by the time you get down here to the side of the face now, you're almost going to be
laying it back down. Now see, looky there. I got that one. That's an example of making
one of them too straight. I did not put enough S-curve to it. I don't like that. You got to
make sure you got plenty of curve, plenty of curve on your hair. The more S-curve you get in the hair,
the better it looks. I'm sorry, it looks like I got off camera there for a second.
Now you'll notice here that I'm starting to start to get them on down the side of the face. Now I'm
going to go ahead and do some of these around here. And what I want to do there, here again,
I'll just draw a line. I want to start out, get him a nice curve, and let him come back like so.
All right, I want to go clean to the lip with that. Now here again, you're going to have to
be careful because you'll probably run into going uphill and downhill on the grain, and you may have
to turn it and let this come. And remember, I'm wanting everything to blow to the left,
so I'm going to end him up going to the left like so. Come in here and put me another one.
There we go. Of course, when you kind of go downhill, that's why you want to
try to keep two, try to keep two hands on your carving at all times. You won't have as much
trouble there. I can come in here and put another one. I think I'm getting off camera here.
You're turning these daggum carvings so much that it's easy for me to get off camera if I'm not
careful, which I just did. Okay, come down here and put one more, and I'm gonna let him kind of
turn and go and turn. Then I can come in here and put another one. And you just go around here and
do like this, and you want to vary them. You don't want them all to be the same length. You don't
want them to look all the same. You want to keep it interesting. You want to keep a flow to them
like so. Put that in there. Come down here and put a couple more in, and then I'm going to turn
this thing off. Then I'm going to turn this thing off and finish the other side. I don't think you
particularly want to watch me carve every one of these, and it just takes longer than we need to
make this video longer than it has to be. There we go. And once you get used to doing this,
you can actually do this quite fast. Just add in a couple more just for interest,
and there we go. There's half of him done. Excuse me. There you go. There's half of him done right
now. You can see the hair I put on here, and I'm going to do one side of this mustache real quick.
Now, you can use this big tool, but I think I will switch over to about a
this tool right here, which is about an eighth inch or so, and I like to use a smaller tool when
I do a mustache a lot of times. Now, I'm going to come and make sure that I got a good stop cut
on the inside of this mustache right here. Okay, there we go. I'm going to get that stop cut back
in there. Make sure I got a good stop cut. All right, now I'm going to come right up to the top
first right here, right here, and I'm going to put one like that right in the middle. All right,
now then, I'll draw this in a little bit for you. When I come off, I start at the top. I stay close,
and I let it widen out as it comes, and as I come down here, and you notice I'm putting a little
less curve in there. Once again, I don't like stray hair. Put a little less curve in there,
and you're working your way all the way down, all the way down. I'll come and put one right in the
middle, right in the middle like so, and then, see, I'll probably put some in between like that,
and then there'll be one more out here. All right, now keep in mind you have to always make sure
you're cutting downhill because it's real easy to have a grain change because of the way I cut
this thing. Now, see, I can come up here, and at the top, they're going to get right together.
I'm going to turn it around, come down real carefully, do that, so you can finish it off
like that. Come on down here like that. I'm going to cut them this way,
and then I'll turn around and finish them. I'm trying to go a little bit faster here,
okay, and come and look like that. There you go, a little bit deeper.
Don't cut it deep enough the first time, so you can always come back, cut it a little bit deeper.
This is awkward for me. All right, now let me finish this one up here. Be careful on this one
because that's right on that tight corner. You can bust it out if you're not careful.
Turn them around. There we go. I'll come on back up to the nose.
So you can see I can get another one in right here. I'm having to hold this in an awkward position,
and it's not helping my accuracy with my cut, so to speak.
This one I'm going to bring up and probably just die it off right about there.
We cut a couple of these a little bit. I didn't like the way they
ripped, and there you go. There's one half is his mustache, and once again, I'll finish the other half
off camera, but you can get the idea, and then when I come back, I'll show you some details. Okay.
