First look how to apply fertilizer to your mango tree.
First remove the grass from the trunk to the drip line of the tree.
Now how to apply fertilizer to the tree.
Do not fertilize near the trunk where are mainly the support roots of the tree.
The mango tree root system has primary, secondary and tertiary roots having numerous fibrous roots.
The fibrous roots mainly absorb water and nutrients and are farthest away from the root.
So apply fertilizer from 1.5 feet away from the trunk to the canopy of the tree between two white lines shown here.
If growing in a pot, fertilize only near the rim of the pot 6 inches away from the trunk and then water.
Now when to apply fertilizer to the tree.
For young trees, feed in spring, summer and autumn.
For established trees, feed in spring just before flowering and summer just after fruit harvesting.
Mix composted cow manure every year in the soil to add natural nutrients and to improve moisture holding capacity of soil.
Add 5 kg cow manure in the soil at the time of planting.
Then 10 kg when the tree is 1 year old and increase it by 10 kg each year till the tree is 5 year old and then every year 50 kg.
Feed a balanced fertilizer like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium in the ratio of 14-14-14 or 10-20-20
and containing magnesium, sulfur, boron and trace elements for flowering.
The tree needs more nitrogen when it is young but less when it starts to bear fruit.
Too much nitrogen to fruiting trees will result in excessive vegetative growth and poor quality fruit.
A citrus fertilizer is very good for mango trees.
It has the desired NPK balance with a mixture of micronutrients and trace elements.
How much fertilizer to the tree?
The amount of fertilizer depends on the size and age of the tree.
Apply 125 gm fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter at 1 foot height.
So if the trunk is 4 inch wide then feed 500 gm fertilizer.
Apply 200 gm at the time of planting then 500 gm when it is 1 year old.
Then increase it by 500 gm each year so 1 kg for 2 years, 2 kg for 4 years etc.
Divide the amount in 3 parts and apply in spring, summer and autumn.
From 5 years onward feed additional dose of potassium nitrate as shown to encourage flowers.
The chemical fertilizer can burn young trees due to over fertilizing.
So you can use fish emulsion fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizer for mango trees of 1 and 2 years age.
Fish emulsion is an organic liquid fertilizer high in nitrogen which is good for young plants for growth.
Apply every 2 weeks.
It is important to note that the tree will absorb all of the nutrients from the fertilizer only in the soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.
If the soil pH is not right then you will be wasting your money.
It is better to test the soil pH with a test kit and adjust the pH if not correct.
If pH is less than 5.5 then add dolomite or garden lime in the soil.
If it is more than 7 then add garden sulfur, compost or coffee grounds in the soil.
Apply organic compost as mulch in spring and autumn that will help the absorption of micronutrients.
Copper and boron prevent fruit drop and improve flowering and the quality of fruits.
Dissolve in water zinc sulfate 50 grams, copper sulfate 50 grams and borax 20 grams and spray on the leaves and add in soil.
Mango tree not fruiting or fruit not sweet.
If the tree has grown too big but not producing enough fruit or the fruit is not sweet then switch to a fertilizer with less nitrogen.
Also do not use nitrogen fertilizer on grass anywhere near the tree.
If potassium and calcium are not enough then tree becomes weak and diseased and produces less sweet fruits.
Feed sulfate of potash for potassium and gypsum or calcium sulfate for calcium.
Home made mango fertilizer.
If she do not want to use chemical fertilizer then try this homemade fertilizer using groundnut cake fertilizer and seaweed.
Put 1 kilogram peanut cake and a cup of yogurt or buttermilk in 5 liter water.
After 10 days of fermentation filter it out and mix 100 milligram of this in 1 liter water and add some liquid seaweed.
Use this fertilizer every 2 weeks to get higher yields and also to treat various mango diseases.
