giovanni torlonia his son alessandro
between the end of the eighteenth century and
the entire nineteenth century bought
many antiquities which largely
came from older collections we
have told the story of the
formation of this museum torlonia
through older collections of
great importance such as the
Giustiniani collection which is the one
in the room in which we are therefore a
collection of collections in the
literal sense and represents a cross-section of the
collection of antiquities from the
fifteenth to the nineteenth century
but without explaining many many things it
tells us the history of
imperial portraiture for example tells us the
history of ancient collecting because
we have a Greek relief
from the end of the fifth century which already in the
second century AD, therefore in
Roman times, had been the object of the
antiques market and decorated as an
antique piece a villa of a great
Herodian figure attic his villa
on the Appian Way therefore the phenomenon of
collecting is told from
its most remote origins
first of all it is important for the
size of the collection 620 pieces and
even more in reality they are a
truly considerable number and then it is
important because it has absorbed a series
of nuclei of equally
important collections from previous centuries almost
in bulk therefore allowing us to study
a series of collecting phenomena
that go back to the 16th century and even
beyond
these works first of all are only a
small part of the Torlonia collection
which is made up of over 600 pieces
today we are let's say we
managed to exhibit around ninety very selected pieces in this very important exhibition,
these pieces will be the
absolute showcase of the collection and
will have further exhibitions in
prestigious foreign stages in Paris
during the following years, the
foundation will carry on the
restoration works of arrangement also of study
in the remaining part of the collection and
will identify, in agreement with the
ministry and the owners of the works,
a definitive location for the museum which
also has the prestige due to
this collection with a very long
history
