It sits atop the Festungsberg mountain at an altitude of 506 metres. Fortress Hohensalzburg was erected in the 11th century at the behest of the prince-archbishops of Salzburg. The Hiking Hermit presents Fortress Hohensalzburg Salzburg, Austria
We are on our up to the Fortress Hohensalzburg which is the largest
fully preserved castle in Central Europe
Here on the right is where you buy your ticket for the Fortress Hohensalzburg funicular
This takes you right into the fortress and I will show you where later in the video
There are a number of ticket options and I have left a link in the description to those options
On this occasion we take the uphill 10 minute walk to gain entry into the fortress
You can either walk up the hill or up go up the steps which we do
The steps route takes you up the side of the Fortress Hohensalzburg funicular
The added advantage of walking up, other than it being chepaer, is that you get
see views from a couple of viewpoints the people on the funicular don't get to see.
The Fortress Hohensalzburg is an eleventh century
castle that sits atop the Festungsberg mountain at an altitude of 506 metres
So I'm about to go into the Salzburg Fortress
and I've done the skip the line thing here
so it opens a link in your browser when you scan the barcode at the bottom
and then you can pay by credit card so
I bascially got the ticket to have the full tour
If you don't take the funicular like me you've to do this bit of an hill
to get to the entrance
Ah and there's free wi-fi
bonus
well it's hardly free I paid 13.80 to get in
So I've just scanned my ticket and I'm in, there was no queue
but saved me messing around
So here we are at the Salzburg Fortress
Looks as though it was
once was
something kind of
waterfall
to get rid of all the crap
the latrine flow
So we've just walked up that steep slope behind me
and must admit I'm feeling a bit lethargic today
Looks as though there could be plenty of little nooks and crannies
I'm not sure which direction I should be going in
I'm going to go clockwise
See where it takes me
I'll apologise ahead of time for any heavy breathing because I'm doing a bit of climbing
I'm sure IJ will enjoy it
So looks like some shops here where you can buy beers
ha, beers in the fortress
The weather was meant to be
a bit cloudy
a bit of rain
had some rain this morning, a thunderstorm
but it's back to being beautful weather
sun's out
As I say looks like they're serving drinks, beers, food
See what's down here
Trying not get them kids in my video
in fact I don't like anybody in my video usually
not even me, ha
Just coming up to a panoramic viewpoint
This one is pretty cool
WOW!
Look at that
That is pretty cool
See out to the mountains
As I say it's a pretty hot today, again
Not as hot as it has been but still getting on for 30C
You can see the walls of the fortress dotted around the city too
in various spots
So I'm just leaving that viewpoint
and seen some stairs going down to what looks like another cafe
Looks like I might end up missing bits of this castle or fortress
because there's loads of little nooks and crannies
Certainly is a nice place to have some food
and a pint
I've had better places to sup beer though
I've been spoiled
I don't fancy a pint until later anyway
Ah that's for the funicular
That's where you arrive if you take the funicular up and down
If you want to be lazy, I've been lazy this week a little bit
taking trains and cable cars etc
Coming up to another cafe
with panoramic views
Might just have a drink later before I leave
Might just have that beer
We'll see what panoramic view this wall gives
Looks like a view over the city, this bit
Sure is
and you can see the wall I was at earlier
when those bells started to ring
That was pretty cool
Pretty cool view
Thing is with these kind of places there's always loads of people
You can see the funicular coming up
It doesn't half cause a racket when you're stood down there
it sounds like thunder
Ah there's a spot here where there's nobody around
For now anyway
But yeah it's a pretty cool view
So I think I'll climb these stairs now
I wonder if I can get up into the tower?
It doesn't look like it
So about half way up those stairs now
getting a better view
well a different view
bit higher up perspective
So just climbing the stairs now
getting views into that cafe I passed a short time ago
Sure is some pretty good views
I'm sure you'll agree
Another photo stop
So we've just climbed the stairs
and come to an interval courtyard
Actually I think that's where we walked earlier
so I'll make my way around here
Canons into the city
I wonder how many years since this has been fired
Well I've got the full tour so I should be able to go in the puppets
Some dodgy looking puppets here, a bat
very scary
You can buy a knight for 69 euros
There's bats flying around
Look at that
very scary
I hope they don't bite
I'd be a bit scared here if I was a kid
scary place, bats flying around and scary looking puppets
Soneones got an evil laugh then
it wasn't me, not me
There's a photo point here
I don't know
maybe you just make stupid faces
Let's have a look
i'm looking scared
BOOM!
Another canon fired
I wonder how it would blast
More canons
Go up the stairs to the museum
I paid the full entrance
Museum tour
I'm not exactly sure why I booked a museum tour
I'm not really into museums
I find them a bit boring
Scary dude
Silverware
Creaking floors
Nice views out the window
Pretty cool place
I'm not quite sure what this is
I think it's some kind of art
Heaven on Earth
That's a cool looking ornamental piece
That somebodies bed
It wouldn't fit me in there
I'm 1.83 metres
Looks like models of the castle throughout the ages
That one's around 1460
And then this is 1495
1515
1540
1619
Don't know about you but it looks like that game of Cluedo
with those plaques
maybe it's just me
let me know if you thought the same in the comments
This one's 1653
And quite up to date 1810
He looks an happy chap
He looks like me when there's load of people around
Ah St Georges church I'm about to enter
Sure is lots of nooks and crannies around so it's
hard to know where you have been and where you haven't been
I'm sure I'll be finding how to get up that tower
Ah I've not been out here
It looks like another panoramic view
So let's see what this gives
Sure is a different part of the castle
So come into a different viewpoint
panoramic view from here
I've had a similar to this but not quite from this perspective
Sure does give some good views of the city of Salzburg
So I think I'm going to go and find how you get up some of these towers
Here we go, Observation Tower
Not sure if you have pay extra but I've got the full tour
So we're now on our way up to the observation deck
Pretty cool
See what
this gives
Looks like more museum type guff
I'm just interested in seeing views from the tower
It's not like me to try and get up high
see what the views are
The stairs are creaking
I think I've been eating too much this week
There's quite a few steps before you get to the observation deck
which I'm almost at now
Pretty cool views
So I made it up the tower
I can go home
Take some photos now
Not as many people down here spoiling the view
just stand the camera up in the air
see what views we can get
So we've just left the observation tower
making our way down
I think that's pretty much the castle tour done
Great view and a nice breeze coming through this little window
at the side
So there was a spiral stair that took you out
towards the side of St Georges church entrance
I think I've pretty much toured the castle
so I'm going to find the exit
I think the highlights for me were the views over the city and towards the mountains
Looks like the path, or the exit out, is the way we came in so
I believe this is the way we came in
so find my way back
Well actually it wasn't the path I took
It's probably one of the paths of to the side that I didn't take
This will eventually get us onto the path we was on when we entered
but it's a hermit friendly part of the castle or fortress I should say
because there is nobody around
Ah through that big door
I guess it can be a bit slippy on the way down
I've been down worse on the mountains
So here we coming up to the exit now
Another tour
