他們再POP-UP
Cape Cod
we find that there's pros and cons to each one
and they all have their drawbacks
and that's why we use multiple technologies
to get a comprehensive look at the biology and ecology of the animal
because each one brings its strengths and weaknesses
when we talk about pop-up satellite tags
we're talking about a very relatively short-term deployment
up to a year
everything you're trying to do is driven by
the questions you're trying to answer
as well as the behavior of the animal itself
so some of these technologies simply don't work on certain species
when you look at those OCEARCH maps
you have to keep in mind that the frequency
at which we get the observations from the animal
has time between that
so you're not tracking every movement of that animal
so if a shark moves from the Gulf of Mexico
let's say it's in the Gulf of Mexico in June
and then it moves around the Florida Keys
and up to the eastern side of Mexico
and you don't hear from it again until July
it looks like you connect those two dots
the shark went straight across, you know, Florida
and of course it doesn't, it didn't do that
it's just we don't have the data filling in in between
the other issue is the fact that there's error associated
with these what we call geopositions coming from the tag
it's a geopositioning technique that always
it's not GPS, okay
so it doesn't give you that same level of accuracy
as a GPS transmit
instead we do what's called Doppler-based geopositioning
and that has error
and that error could be a few miles
and so if you've got a shark
that's very, very close to land
sometimes it pings
and it pings like it's right up inside a bay
and it crossed the land to get into that bay
or, you know, some body of water would land in the way
and that's likely not the case
it's likely the shark is actually just outside
very close to shore but just outside
didn't enter that bay
because these, particularly white sharks
don't like to really go into these embayments
they like to hang just outside of them
and therefore you're getting an erroneous geoposition
what I find out
with all these great new technologies that have come out
we're learning where the sharks are going
but we're not really getting a sense
of what they're actually doing
so many of us scientists are saying
well, you know, the shark's diving to great depths
in the middle of the Atlantic
so it must be feeding
well, we really don't know that
is there a reproductive component to this
is there some thermoregulatory component
what's going on
and so for me, the next big step
and we've started trying to solve this
is to use technology
that's going to actually observe the behavior of these animals
and those kinds of direct observations
come from, you know, camera imagery
and videography
so the next big step for us
is to take these technologies
and explode them
so that we can get a sense
of what these sharks are actually doing
when they leave us
